Chapter 1: Leave My House

Chapter 1: Leave My House

I looked at my mother first.

Then at my sister.

Neither of them spoke.

Neither of them even looked embarrassed.

Finally, I broke the silence.

"You've done enough."

My mother blinked.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean you're leaving. Tonight."

The smile disappeared from her face.

"What?"

"You promised to help my wife while I was away. Instead, you sat here while she cared for our sick son, cooked your dinner, cleaned this house, and exhausted herself trying to keep everything together."

My sister scoffed.

"We're guests."

"No," I answered.

"Guests don't watch a mother collapse while asking when dinner will be ready."

My mother's expression hardened.

"I raised you better than this."

"You did raise me."

I nodded slowly.

"And that's exactly why I know this isn't right."

She stood.

"I am your mother."

"And Emily is my wife."

The room became painfully quiet.

"My responsibility is to protect the family I created."

Emily gently touched my arm.

"Please... don't fight."

I looked back at her.

"This isn't a fight."

"It's a boundary."

I carried Leo upstairs while Emily packed a small overnight bag.

Within twenty minutes my mother and sister had gathered their luggage.

Neither apologized.

Neither asked how Leo was feeling.

As the front door closed behind them, the house became strangely peaceful.

For the first time in days...

Emily smiled.

Only a little.

But it was enough.

That night I ordered dinner.

I gave Leo his medicine.

Then I tucked him into bed while Emily finally took the first uninterrupted shower she'd had all week.

When she came downstairs, she looked at the untouched dishes.

"You didn't leave anything for me to do."

I smiled.

"That's the point."

She burst into tears again.

May you like

This time...

They were tears of relief.
