Chapter 9 - The Empty Grave

Vivian Hale's grave was opened under court order.
The coffin was empty.
No bones.
No ashes.
Nothing.
Only two rusted dental crowns sealed inside a plastic evidence pouch.
Rachel stood beyond the cemetery barrier with Adrian as forensic investigators worked.
"She staged the death," Adrian said.
"Or somebody staged it for her."
He looked toward Richard Sloan.
The attorney sat inside an unmarked police vehicle.
After thirty years of silence, he had become the most valuable witness in the state.
Richard's story began in 1999.
Charles had already married the woman he believed was Victoria.
Then an anonymous letter arrived.
YOU MARRIED THE WRONG SISTER.
Charles hired Richard to investigate quietly.
They discovered the grave.
Opened it privately.
Found nothing.
"Why didn't he go to police?" Rachel demanded.
Richard looked ashamed.
"Because he was terrified of scandal."
Rachel almost laughed.
"A dead woman had stolen her sister's identity and he was worried about scandal?"
"He didn't know whether she had killed Victoria."
"He knew enough."
Richard said nothing.
Adrian looked away.
Charles's greatest weakness had not been ignorance.
It had been reputation.
Again and again, he had discovered pieces of evil and tried to contain them privately.
Every time, Victoria grew stronger.
"Why did you help forge the codicil?" Adrian asked.
Richard's face crumpled.
"Because she knew I helped Charles open the grave illegally."
"That's it?"
"No."
"What else?"
Richard swallowed.
"I falsified the court petition we used."
Rachel stared.
"You committed fraud."
"Yes."
"And Victoria found out."
"Yes."
"So she owned you."
"For twenty-seven years."
Adrian stood.
"You let her use my father."
Richard's eyes filled.
"I know."
"You let her target my daughter."
"I know."
"Stop saying that."
Adrian's voice cracked.
"You don't know."
Rachel touched his arm.
Richard reached into a police evidence envelope.
"There is one thing Charles kept from her."
He removed a key card.
"What's that?"
"Private vault."
"Where?"
"Manhattan."
The vault belonged to an old law firm Charles had used before Richard.
Inside was the original trust.
Not a copy.
The original.
Rachel read the succession clause twice.
Adopted children expressly included.
No biological verification requirement.
No transfer to the foundation at Adrian's fortieth birthday.
Victoria's codicil was fraudulent from beginning to end.
Maya Chen nearly smiled when she saw it.
"She's finished."
Rachel wasn't convinced.
"No."
Maya looked at her.
"Legally—"
"Victoria has survived identity fraud, financial theft, a suspicious death, a forged estate amendment, and abusing a child."
Rachel closed the folder.
"People like that don't stop because you prove they're wrong."
She was right.
That same afternoon, Whitmore Holdings received notice of an emergency board meeting.
Victoria controlled four directors through the Heritage Foundation.
She intended to remove Adrian as CEO.
Her stated reason:
"Material uncertainty concerning his legal identity and fiduciary fitness."
Adrian laughed.
"She's trying to steal the company while under indictment."
Maya corrected him.
"She's trying to create chaos before the original trust is admitted."
Rachel studied the board list.
Seven directors.
Adrian needed four votes.
He had three.
The deciding vote belonged to Thomas Reed, an eighty-one-year-old retired banker who had known Charles for forty years.
Thomas had not spoken publicly since the scandal began.
Rachel drove to his home.
He received her in a library overlooking the Hudson.
"You look like Eleanor," he said.
Rachel smiled faintly.
"I'm not related to her."
"Neither was Adrian."
The old man smiled.
"That was Charles's joke."
Rachel sat.
"Will you vote with Adrian?"
Thomas looked toward the river.
"I haven't decided."
"Why?"
"Because Adrian spent years ignoring what was happening inside his own family."
Rachel didn't defend him.
"You're right."
Thomas turned.
"Interesting."
"What?"
"Most wives would argue."
"I'm not here to protect Adrian from the truth."
"Then why are you here?"
"To protect the company from Victoria."
Thomas studied her.
"Charles once said you were the only person in the family who frightened him."
Rachel blinked.
"Why?"
"Because you asked questions and didn't care whether the answers were polite."
She almost smiled.
Thomas poured tea.
"Tell Adrian I will attend the meeting."
"How will you vote?"
"You'll find out."
The boardroom was full the next morning.
Victoria appeared by video because of court restrictions.
She looked immaculate.
Adrian sat at one end.
Rachel and Maya behind him.
The vote began.
Three for Adrian.
Three for removal.
Thomas Reed held the seventh vote.
The old man adjusted his glasses.
"Before I vote, I have one question."
Victoria smiled.
"Of course."
Thomas held up a document.
"Mrs. Whitmore, are you familiar with the original 1998 Whitmore Legacy Trust?"
Victoria's smile disappeared.
Her attorney leaned toward her.
Thomas continued.
"I've spent the morning reading it."
Silence.
"It states that the Heritage Foundation has no succession rights whatsoever."
One director turned.
"What?"
Thomas looked toward Victoria.
"The codicil granting those rights is fraudulent."
Victoria disconnected.
The screen went black.
Thomas voted.
Adrian remained CEO.
But before anyone could celebrate, the building's fire alarm screamed.
Lights flashed.
Security rushed in.
Rachel immediately knew.
"Where's the trust?"
Maya looked at the table.
The original document was gone.
Someone had taken it during the evacuation.
May you like
And only seven people had been inside the boardroom.
One of them was a traitor.
