Chapter 10 - The Traitor at the Table

The missing trust never left the building.
Rachel was certain of it.
The boardroom occupied the forty-second floor.
During the fire alarm, elevators shut down.
Security cameras covered every stairwell.
Nobody carrying the document appeared on any recording.
Which meant it had been hidden.
Or destroyed.
Detective Ortiz sealed the conference floor.
Every director protested.
Thomas Reed did not.
"If someone steals from a room while I'm inside it," he said, "I'd rather know who."
Rachel agreed.
The conference table was searched.
Waste bins.
Ceiling panels.
Bathrooms.
Nothing.
Then Rachel noticed the water pitcher.
Condensation covered the glass.
Beside it was a damp ring on the polished table.
Underneath the ring, barely visible, was a smear of blue ink.
Maya's archival folder used blue document tabs.
Rachel walked toward Peter Lang.
He sat near the water.
"Stand up."
Lang frowned.
"Excuse me?"
"Stand up."
Ortiz approached.
"Mr. Lang."
He rose.
A corner of blue archival paper protruded from the inner lining of his jacket.
Lang ran.
He made it six feet.
Bennett stopped him.
The original trust was folded inside his coat.
Adrian stared in disbelief.
"You've been on this board sixteen years."
Lang looked away.
"Victoria owns you?" Rachel asked.
Nothing.
"How much?"
He laughed bitterly.
"Money isn't the only thing people can steal."
Rachel understood.
"What does she have on you?"
Lang closed his eyes.
"My daughter."
Adrian's anger vanished.
"What?"
"She disappeared two years ago."
Rachel felt cold.
Lang continued.
"Victoria told me she knew where she was."
"Did she?"
"I don't know."
"Then why obey her?"
"Because every six months she sends me a photograph."
Ortiz leaned forward.
"Of your daughter?"
"Yes."
"Alive?"
"Yes."
The room changed instantly.
This was no longer a financial conspiracy.
A missing woman might still be held somewhere.
Lang gave Ortiz every message.
The photographs showed his daughter Emily in different rooms.
No windows.
Neutral walls.
One picture contained a small detail in the background.
A hotel laundry bag.
Rachel zoomed in.
A crest.
The Whitmore Heritage Foundation owned three residential treatment centers.
One used that crest.
Police raided it before midnight.
Emily Lang was found alive in a locked staff apartment.
She had entered the center voluntarily for addiction treatment two years earlier.
When she tried to leave, administrators told her family had obtained a court order.
No such order existed.
Victoria had kept her hidden to control her father.
That discovery changed the case.
Federal kidnapping charges became possible.
The Heritage Foundation's records were seized.
Twenty-seven shell companies emerged.
Money had flowed through clinics, treatment centers, and charitable housing projects.
Some residents had their identities used to open accounts.
Others had been billed for services they never received.
Victoria hadn't merely stolen from Charles.
She had built an entire machine.
And it ran on vulnerable people.
Rachel spent six days with forensic accountants.
Every trail returned to one entity.
A private holding company named VHM Partners.
V.H.M.
Vivian Hale Mercer?
No.
Grace said Mercer had nothing to do with it.
Rachel searched incorporation records.
The company had been created thirty-one years earlier.
Initial shareholder:
Victoria Hale.
Second shareholder:
Eleanor Whitmore.
Rachel stared.
"Eleanor?"
Adrian came over.
"What?"
"Your mother owned part of this company."
"That makes no sense."
Unless Eleanor had been investigating it.
The company's first transaction occurred four months before Eleanor died.
A transfer of five million dollars from Vale Maritime.
Sebastian Vale's money.
Adrian's biological inheritance.
Rachel slowly understood.
Victoria hadn't merely wanted Charles.
She had wanted the Vale fortune too.
Eleanor had discovered that infant Adrian was entitled to assets hidden after Vale Maritime collapsed.
She created VHM Partners to preserve them for him.
Victoria hijacked the company.
After Eleanor died, the money vanished.
Adrian stared at the screen.
"She stole my parents twice."
Rachel looked at him.
First their lives.
Then their money.
But the forensic accountant found something else.
A current account.
Still active.
Balance:
$84,613,221.
Owner:
VHM Partners.
Authorized signer:
Vivian Hale.
Rachel's heart raced.
"If she's been signing as Vivian..."
Maya completed the thought.
"Then she has admitted legally that she isn't Victoria."
They obtained a freeze order.
Too late.
The account had been emptied eleven minutes earlier.
All eighty-four million transferred offshore.
Ortiz tracked the authorization.
It had been made from a computer inside Whitmore House.
Rachel's stomach dropped.
Nobody from Victoria's team was supposed to have access to the mansion.
Adrian pulled up the security cameras.
At 4:11 p.m., the east service door opened.
A woman entered wearing a housekeeping uniform.
She kept her face down.
At 4:19 she entered Charles's study.
At 4:23 the transfer occurred.
At 4:27 she left.
Rachel rewound.
Zoomed.
The woman looked up once.
Victoria.
She had violated the restraining order and entered the mansion herself.
But that wasn't what frightened Rachel.
At 4:16, another figure appeared on the upstairs landing.
Small.
Wearing pink pajamas.
Lily.
Rachel stopped the footage.
Her blood froze.
"Where is she?"
Adrian ran upstairs.
"Lily!"
No answer.
Rachel followed.
The bedroom was empty.
The window stood open.
On the pillow lay the wooden horse.
And underneath it—
a note.
