Chapter 9 — The Signature

Sarah couldn't move.

“You?”

Mark's words echoed through the room.

The real heir isn't Noah.

It's you.

Detective Walker looked from Mark to Sarah.

“What exactly do you mean?”

Mark stepped inside.

“I mean Thomas didn't create the trust for Noah.”

Sarah stared at him.

“Then why is Noah named as beneficiary?”

“Because that's what everyone was supposed to believe.”

Walker frowned.

“Explain.”

Mark closed the door.

“I need to know whether we're safe first.”

Walker looked at him coldly.

“You disappeared from a crime scene.”

“I was kidnapped.”

“You were seen entering the evidence room.”

“Not me.”

“You've been using your identity?”

“No.”

“Someone has.”

Mark looked at Sarah.

“And I know who.”

Sarah's voice was barely audible.

“Who?”

Mark answered:

“My mother.”

Walker shook his head.

“Your mother?”

“She has access to everything.”

“The biometric credentials?”

“Yes.”

“The financial accounts?”

“Yes.”

“The trust?”

“Yes.”

“The foundation?”

“Yes.”

Walker stared.

“And the fake Mark?”

Mark shook his head.

“Not fake.”

Sarah frowned.

“What?”

“It's Adrian.”

“But you said he was dead.”

“I lied.”

Sarah's eyes widened.

“Why?”

“Because I was trying to protect him.”

“You told me he died.”

“I needed everyone to believe that.”

“Everyone?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Mark looked at Walker.

“Because Thomas wasn't the only person searching for him.”

Sarah whispered:

“Who else?”

Mark looked at her.

“Federal investigators.”

Walker stiffened.

“What?”

“Adrian stole the ledger.”

“The original ledger?”

“Yes.”

“And then disappeared.”

“Because he knew if he handed it over, people would die.”

Walker frowned.

“That doesn't make sense.”

Mark nodded.

“I know.”

Sarah stepped closer.

“What did Adrian tell you?”

Mark took a breath.

“He told me Thomas didn't create the Carter empire.”

Sarah frowned.

“Then who did?”

“My grandmother.”

Sarah stared.

“Your grandmother?”

“She was the real founder.”

“What happened to her?”

“She disappeared.”

“When?”

“Twenty-eight years ago.”

Sarah remembered the old family photographs.

There had always been a woman missing from them.

A woman Mark's father never discussed.

“What was her name?”

“Evelyn Carter.”

Walker looked surprised.

“We have a file on her.”

Sarah turned.

“What file?”

“Missing person.”

Mark nodded.

“She wasn't missing.”

Sarah stared.

“She was murdered?”

“No.”

“Then where is she?”

Mark looked at Sarah.

“She became someone else.”

Sarah felt a chill.

“Who?”

Mark didn't answer.

A voice came from behind them.

“Me.”

Everyone turned.

Elena stood in the doorway.

Sarah's heart stopped.

“Where have you been?”

Elena walked inside slowly.

“Trying to stay alive.”

Walker raised his weapon.

“Hands where I can see them.”

Elena obeyed.

Sarah stared at her.

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“About your name.”

“Yes.”

“About Adrian.”

“Yes.”

“About the ledger.”

“Yes.”

“About everything.”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

Sarah's eyes narrowed.

“What didn't you lie about?”

Elena looked at Noah.

“I never lied about wanting to protect him.”

Sarah held her son tighter.

“Why?”

“Because Noah is innocent.”

“So am I.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did Thomas call me the primary target?”

Elena's face changed.

“Because he knows what you are.”

Sarah frowned.

“What am I?”

Elena looked at Mark.

Then Walker.

Then back at Sarah.

“The final beneficiary.”

Silence.

Mark nodded.

“She is.”

Sarah stared at him.

“Explain.”

Mark reached into his coat.

He pulled out an old envelope.

The paper was yellow with age.

On the front:

FOR SARAH CARTER — TO BE OPENED ONLY AFTER THE DEATH OF THOMAS CARTER.

Sarah's hands shook.

“But Thomas isn't dead.”

“He was supposed to be.”

Mark handed her the envelope.

Sarah opened it.

Inside was a legal document.

At the top:

AMENDMENT TO CARTER FAMILY ASSET TRUST

Her eyes moved down.

Her name appeared.

SARAH CARTER — PRIMARY PROTECTOR AND ULTIMATE BENEFICIARY.

Sarah stared.

“I don't understand.”

Elena spoke quietly.

“Thomas never trusted his children.”

Sarah looked at her.

“He trusted you?”

“No.”

“Then why put my name here?”

“Because your husband married the only woman outside the family he believed could resist them.”

Sarah looked at Mark.

“Your father chose me?”

“Yes.”

“But why Noah?”

Mark answered:

“Because Noah was the shield.”

Sarah frowned.

“The shield?”

“The visible heir.”

Everyone thought the fortune belonged to Noah.

That made Noah the target.

But the real legal structure was different.

Noah held the assets in trust.

Sarah held ultimate protective authority.

If anyone attempted to remove Noah from the trust illegally, Sarah could freeze everything.

“And if I die?”

Mark's expression hardened.

“Everything goes into federal receivership.”

Sarah stared.

“So nobody inherits.”

“Correct.”

“That means…”

“Your death destroys the fortune.”

Elena nodded.

“That is why Thomas wants you gone.”

Sarah looked at Noah.

Suddenly the poisoning attempt made sense.

If Sarah were blamed for poisoning her own child, she could be declared unfit.

If she were declared unfit, she would lose her authority.

If she disappeared, the court could appoint a Carter-controlled guardian.

Then the fortune would become accessible.

Sarah whispered:

“This was never about killing Noah.”

“No.”

“It was about removing me.”

“Yes.”

Walker looked at Mark.

“Then why did Thomas want you to sign the custody documents?”

“Because he needed me to become Noah's temporary legal guardian.”

Sarah stared.

“And then?”

“Once you were declared unfit, I would control the trust.”

“Under the foundation.”

“Yes.”

“And your mother would control the foundation.”

“Yes.”

Sarah looked at him.

“And you?”

Mark lowered his eyes.

“I would be the public face.”

Sarah stepped backward.

“You were part of the plan.”

“No.”

“You just admitted it.”

“I was being manipulated.”

“But you signed things.”

“Yes.”

“You moved money.”

“Yes.”

“You created shell companies.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about the trust.”

“Yes.”

Sarah's eyes filled with anger.

“And you still expect me to believe you're innocent?”

Mark looked at her.

“I don't.”

The honesty stunned her.

“I know what I did.”

“Then why should I trust you?”

“You shouldn't.”

Elena stepped forward.

“Sarah.”

Sarah looked at her.

“What?”

“There is one final document.”

She held up a sealed envelope.

“This came from Adrian.”

Sarah stared.

“Where is he?”

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“Alive.”

Mark looked at her.

“You told me he died.”

“I had to.”

“Why?”

“Because Thomas was listening.”

Sarah frowned.

“Where is Adrian?”

“Safe.”

“Bring him here.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because he's the only person who can testify against Thomas.”

Walker stepped forward.

“Then we need him.”

Elena shook her head.

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because Thomas knows where he is.”

Walker frowned.

“How?”

Elena looked at Mark.

“Because Mark told him.”

Mark went still.

“What?”

Elena's eyes filled with pain.

“You don't remember.”

“I never told him.”

“You did.”

“When?”

“Before you disappeared.”

Sarah looked at Mark.

“What happened?”

Mark shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Elena said:

“You were drugged.”

Sarah's eyes widened.

“By whom?”

“Your mother.”

Mark looked shocked.

“She drugged me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To extract information.”

“What information?”

“Where Adrian was.”

Mark shook his head.

“I didn't tell her.”

“You did.”

Elena's voice became quiet.

“You told her the location.”

Sarah stared.

“Where?”

Elena answered:

“The old church.”

Mark's face changed.

“Saint Michael's.”

“Yes.”

Walker immediately reached for his radio.

“Send units there.”

Elena grabbed his arm.

“Too late.”

“Why?”

“Because Thomas is already there.”

The radio crackled.

A voice came through.

“Detective Walker?”

“Yes?”

“We have a problem.”

“What?”

“Saint Michael's Church is on fire.”

Sarah's heart stopped.

Walker looked at Elena.

“Is Adrian inside?”

Elena's face went pale.

“I don't know.”

Mark grabbed his coat.

“I'm going.”

Walker blocked him.

“No.”

“My brother may be in there.”

“You're staying here.”

Mark looked at Sarah.

“Then you go.”

Sarah froze.

“Me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because there's something at that church that Thomas needs.”

“What?”

Mark looked at her.

“The original signature.”

Sarah frowned.

“Whose?”

“Yours.”

Her heart stopped.

“My signature?”

“The document that makes you the ultimate beneficiary was never fully executed.”

Sarah stared.

“What does that mean?”

“It means your signature is the final piece.”

Elena nodded.

“And Thomas needs it.”

Sarah looked at the burning church on the police monitor.

“Then why would he set it on fire?”

Mark answered:

“To destroy the document.”

Sarah's eyes narrowed.

“But if he destroys it…”

“You lose legal control.”

“And the Carter family wins.”

“Yes.”

Walker looked at Sarah.

“We're going.”

Sarah tightened her hold on Noah.

“Then let's go.”

As they rushed outside, Mark followed.

But before Sarah entered the police vehicle, her phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

It showed a burning church.

And beneath it:

YOU HAVE TEN MINUTES.

Then another message:

BRING THE BABY.

Sarah froze.

Mark saw the screen.

His face changed.

“No.”

Sarah looked at him.

“What?”

“He doesn't want the signature.”

“What does he want?”

Mark stared at Noah.

“He wants the child.”

The church burned in the distance.

And somewhere inside that fire—

the final piece of the Carter inheritance was waiting.
