Chapter 14 — The Last Betrayal

“Because I'm not alone.”
Adrian's voice echoed from beneath the floor.
Sarah froze.
Mark immediately moved in front of her.
Walker raised his weapon.
“Adrian?”
No answer.
Then footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
Coming from the darkness beneath the vault.
Evelyn gripped her cane.
“Don't go down.”
Sarah looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because Thomas isn't the only person who knows about the lower vault.”
Mark stared at the staircase.
“Who else?”
Evelyn didn't answer.
A shadow appeared at the bottom step.
Then a man stepped into the light.
Sarah's heart stopped.
It was Adrian.
Alive.
No hospital gown.
No blood.
No bullet wound.
He wore a black coat.
His face was cold.
Mark stared at him.
“You lied.”
Adrian looked at his brother.
“I had to.”
“You let us believe you were dying.”
“I needed Thomas to believe I was dead.”
Sarah stepped forward.
“Why?”
Adrian looked at her.
“Because if Thomas knew I was alive, he'd kill Evelyn.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“You should have stayed away.”
“I couldn't.”
Adrian looked at Sarah.
“Not after what they did to you.”
Sarah's voice trembled.
“You're my cousin.”
“Yes.”
“And Mark…”
“Is my cousin too.”
Mark stared at him.
“So all those years…”
“We were both victims.”
Sarah looked at Adrian.
“Then why did you tell me not to come down here?”
Adrian's expression changed.
“Because there's someone else.”
A second figure appeared behind him.
Sarah stopped breathing.
The woman stepped into the light.
Elegant.
Gray-haired.
Wearing a black coat.
Sarah recognized her immediately.
“Margaret.”
Mark's mother smiled.
“Hello, Sarah.”
Mark stared at her.
“Mom?”
Margaret ignored him.
She looked directly at Sarah.
“You've caused me a great deal of trouble.”
Sarah held Noah tighter.
“You tried to frame me.”
Margaret smiled.
“I tried to save this family.”
“You poisoned my son's bottle.”
“No.”
Margaret shook her head.
“Brenda did.”
“You ordered her.”
“I gave her instructions.”
“Same thing.”
Margaret sighed.
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain.”
Margaret stepped closer.
“I never wanted Noah dead.”
Sarah remembered the recording.
“What did you want?”
Margaret looked at Mark.
“I wanted my son free.”
Mark's face hardened.
“Free from what?”
“Your father.”
Thomas's name seemed to poison the room.
Margaret continued.
“Thomas destroyed everyone he touched.”
“You helped him.”
“I survived him.”
Sarah frowned.
“What's the difference?”
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
“I was nineteen when I married him.”
“You knew what he was.”
“I learned.”
“And stayed.”
“Because leaving meant death.”
Sarah shook her head.
“You could have warned me.”
“I tried.”
“When?”
“The messages.”
Sarah froze.
“What messages?”
Margaret smiled.
“The ones you thought were from Thomas.”
Sarah's heart pounded.
“You were the one sending them?”
“Some.”
“Why?”
“To push you toward the truth.”
Mark stared.
“Then why did you frame her?”
Margaret looked at him.
“Because Thomas was watching.”
“You could have told me.”
“He would have killed you.”
Mark laughed bitterly.
“Everyone says that.”
Margaret's expression hardened.
“Because it's true.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“Enough.”
Margaret turned.
“You should be dead.”
“I've been dead before.”
She smiled.
“Like your father.”
Sarah's face changed.
“Don't.”
Margaret looked at her.
“You want the truth?”
“Yes.”
“Then hear it.”
She pointed toward the lower vault.
“Thomas didn't kill Alexander.”
Sarah froze.
“What?”
Margaret nodded.
“He ordered it.”
“But someone else pulled the trigger.”
“Who?”
Margaret looked at Elena.
Sarah turned.
Elena was crying.
“No.”
Sarah stared.
“You?”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
Margaret smiled.
“Tell her.”
Elena's voice broke.
“I didn't kill him.”
“Then who did?”
Margaret looked at Adrian.
“His own brother.”
Adrian's face went pale.
Sarah looked at him.
“What is she talking about?”
Adrian shook his head.
“It's not true.”
Margaret laughed.
“You were there.”
“No.”
“You heard the gunshot.”
“I was a child.”
“You saw Alexander fall.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
Sarah stepped closer.
“Adrian.”
He whispered:
“I saw him die.”
“Who shot him?”
Adrian didn't answer.
Margaret did.
“Thomas.”
Sarah stared.
“But you just said his brother.”
“I said Thomas ordered it.”
She looked at Adrian.
“Your uncle fired the gun.”
Sarah felt dizzy.
“Who?”
Adrian's face broke.
“Jonathan.”
Sarah's breath caught.
“Jonathan Hale?”
Adrian nodded.
“He was forced.”
“By Thomas?”
“Yes.”
Margaret stepped forward.
“Thomas threatened his family.”
Sarah looked at Elena.
“Your husband killed my father?”
Elena shook her head.
“He was forced.”
“But he did it.”
“Yes.”
Sarah's entire world collapsed again.
Her father.
Her mother.
Her grandmother.
The Carter family.
Every relationship had been built around a murder.
Then Margaret whispered:
“And Thomas wasn't the mastermind.”
Sarah looked at her.
“Who was?”
Margaret smiled.
“Evelyn.”
Everyone froze.
Sarah turned.
“Grandmother?”
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
“No.”
Margaret continued.
“She created the original financial network.”
Sarah stared.
“You said Thomas stole everything.”
“He did.”
“But Evelyn created it.”
“Not intentionally.”
Margaret shook her head.
“Evelyn built the trust to protect people.”
“Then how did Thomas take control?”
“He corrupted it.”
Margaret looked at Sarah.
“Then he used Evelyn's own system against her.”
Sarah looked at Evelyn.
“Is that true?”
Evelyn nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
“I don't understand.”
“I built the structure after Jonathan and Alexander warned me about Thomas.”
“To protect the family?”
“Yes.”
“But Thomas found a loophole.”
“He found the one thing I couldn't control.”
“What?”
“Blood.”
Sarah looked at Noah.
Margaret nodded.
“Thomas discovered that the trust could be rewritten if the biological bloodline was altered.”
Sarah frowned.
“How?”
“By creating false heirs.”
Walker finally spoke.
“This is insane.”
Margaret looked at him.
“Is it?”
She pointed toward the shelves.
“Look at the records.”
Walker examined them.
There were dozens of birth certificates.
All altered.
All connected to the Carter fortune.
Margaret continued.
“Thomas replaced heirs with people he could control.”
Sarah whispered:
“And Mark?”
Margaret nodded.
“Mark was one.”
Mark stared.
“I was never supposed to inherit.”
“No.”
“Then why did you raise me?”
“Because Thomas needed a legal son.”
Mark looked devastated.
“And you let him.”
“I had no choice.”
“You always had a choice.”
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
“I tried to leave.”
“When?”
“After you were born.”
Mark stopped.
“You?”
“Yes.”
“You were going to leave?”
“I planned to take you.”
“What happened?”
“Thomas found out.”
Mark's voice broke.
“What did he do?”
“He took you.”
Sarah looked at Margaret.
“And then?”
“I stayed.”
“For twenty years.”
“Yes.”
“To protect him.”
Margaret nodded.
Mark turned away.
For the first time, Sarah saw the same pain in Margaret's face that she had seen in Elena.
Women who had spent decades surviving a man who controlled everyone around him.
But Sarah still couldn't forgive her.
“Where is Thomas?”
Margaret smiled.
“Closer than you think.”
Suddenly a voice echoed through the vault.
“Very close.”
Everyone turned.
A screen flickered on.
Thomas appeared.
He looked amused.
“You've all gathered nicely.”
Sarah stared at him.
“You're a coward.”
Thomas smiled.
“No.”
“You hide behind other people.”
“I learned from the best.”
He looked at Evelyn.
She stepped forward.
“You won't win.”
Thomas laughed.
“I already have.”
“What?”
“The vault.”
Sarah looked around.
“What about it?”
“It's open.”
Walker looked confused.
Thomas continued:
“And now the world will believe Sarah Carter stole two hundred sixteen million dollars.”
Sarah's heart stopped.
“What?”
Thomas smiled.
“Every account has already been transferred.”
Mark looked at Walker.
“Check the system.”
Walker pulled out his phone.
His face changed.
“What happened?”
“Everything is gone.”
Sarah stared.
“Where?”
Walker looked at her.
“Every account is showing Sarah as the authorized transferor.”
Sarah's blood ran cold.
“My identity was used.”
Thomas smiled.
“Exactly.”
Mark stepped toward the screen.
“You won't get away with this.”
Thomas laughed.
“Your wife just transferred the entire Carter fortune into six offshore accounts.”
Sarah shook her head.
“I didn't.”
“I know.”
Thomas smiled.
“But the records say you did.”
Walker looked at Sarah.
“We need to get you somewhere safe.”
“No.”
Sarah stepped forward.
Thomas watched her.
“What?”
“You made one mistake.”
His smile disappeared.
“What mistake?”
“You assumed I needed the money.”
Thomas stared.
Sarah continued:
“I don't.”
“You have no idea what you're saying.”
“I know exactly.”
She looked at the vault.
“Because the money isn't the weapon.”
Thomas went silent.
“The records are.”
Walker understood.
Sarah pointed to the shelves.
“You can move money.”
“But you can't erase history.”
Thomas's expression hardened.
Sarah looked at Adrian.
“Give me the ledger.”
Adrian hesitated.
“Sarah…”
“Now.”
He handed it to her.
She turned to Walker.
“Take everything.”
Walker nodded.
Thomas suddenly shouted:
“No!”
Sarah smiled.
For the first time, he sounded afraid.
“You wanted the vault.”
She held up the ledger.
“Now the world gets it.”
Thomas's face changed.
“You wouldn't.”
“I will.”
“You'll destroy your own family.”
Sarah looked at Mark.
“No.”
She looked at Noah.
“I'll save it.”
Then the vault doors began opening.
Sirens echoed above them.
Federal agents flooded into the tunnel.
Thomas's screen went black.
Margaret smiled faintly.
“He underestimated you.”
Sarah looked at her.
“No.”
Sarah looked at the documents.
“He underestimated what a mother would do when someone threatened her child.”
Then a gunshot echoed from the tunnel.
Everyone froze.
A federal agent shouted:
“DOWN!”
Sarah dropped to the floor with Noah.
Another shot.
Then silence.
When she looked up—
Thomas Carter was standing at the entrance.
May you like
Holding a gun.
And pointing it directly at Mark.
