CHAPTER 4 — She Tried to Ruin My Life for Christmas... Instead, She Lost Everything

The divorce became final six months later.

Daniel never contested it.

He signed every document.

He accepted every condition.

The house was sold.

The money divided.

Neither of us fought.

Some things couldn't be repaired.

He met me one last time outside the courthouse.

"I loved you."

I believed him.

"I know."

"I'm sorry."

"I know."

"Will you ever forgive me?"

I looked down at the pale scars covering my legs.

Then back at him.

"I hope one day I stop carrying the anger."

He nodded.

"But that doesn't mean we belong together."

He smiled sadly.

"I understand."

It was the last time I ever saw Daniel Whitmore.

Two years later...

Christmas looked different.

Smaller.

Quieter.

Peaceful.

The tree stood beside the fireplace.

Cookies baked in the oven.

No shouting.

No walking on eggshells.

No pretending.

Only laughter.

Real laughter.

My daughter ran across the living room carrying wrapping paper twice her height.

My husband—yes, life had surprised me again—caught her before she crashed into the tree.

She laughed so hard she hiccupped.

I smiled.

Then I noticed something resting inside the top drawer of the kitchen island.

My old phone.

The cracked screen still worked.

The recording was still there.

I hadn't listened to it in over a year.

I never would again.

Some evidence belongs in court.

Not in your heart.

I powered the phone off.

Opened the trash bin.

Dropped it inside.

Then I returned to my family.

Outside, fresh snow covered the yard.

Inside, warmth filled every room.

For years I believed the worst night of my life had destroyed everything.

It hadn't.

It had simply burned away the people who never deserved a place in my life.

The scars remained.

But they no longer reminded me of what I had lost.

They reminded me of what I survived.

And this Christmas...

May you like

For the very first time...

Home finally felt safe.
