CHAPTER 2 — She Smirked Until the Police Heard What My Phone Recorded

The front door swung open before anyone reached it.

Two paramedics hurried inside, followed by three police officers.

The smell of burned meat and hot grease still filled the kitchen.

One paramedic knelt beside me immediately.

"Ma'am, don't move."

Another carefully cut away the fabric that had fused against my legs.

Fresh air touched the burns.

The pain became unbearable.

I screamed.

Behind me, Meredith folded her arms.

"It was an accident."

Officer Ramirez looked around the room.

"Who is Meredith Whitmore?"

"I am."

"Stay where you are."

She laughed.

"You can't honestly think I attacked her."

No one answered.

The officer's eyes moved from the shattered roasting pan...

...to the grease covering the floor...

...to my blistering skin.

Then he noticed the phone still clutched in my hand.

"Ma'am," he said gently. "Were you recording?"

I stared at the screen.

The red timer was still running.

Three hours.

Twenty-six minutes.

My stomach tightened.

"Yes."

Meredith's smile disappeared.

Officer Ramirez carefully took the phone.

"With your permission, we'd like to preserve this as evidence."

"You have it."

Meredith finally took one uncertain step backward.

"That recording doesn't prove anything."

I looked directly at her.

"It proves everything."

At the emergency room, second-degree burns covered most of both legs.

The doctors spent nearly six hours cleaning the wounds.

Daniel arrived just before sunrise.

His shirt was stained with grease.

His eyes were bloodshot.

"I never thought she'd actually..."

I interrupted him.

"You never thought she'd hurt me."

He lowered his head.

"No."

"But you also never stopped her."

Silence.

Finally he whispered,

"I was afraid of what my family would become if I chose you."

I almost laughed.

"You already chose."

He looked up hopefully.

Then I finished.

"You chose them."

Those four words hurt him more than any scream I had given that night.

When he reached for my hand...

I pressed the nurse call button.

"I don't want visitors anymore."

Daniel left without another word.

For the first time since our wedding...

I watched him walk away instead of following.

Two days later, Detective Sarah Collins visited my hospital room.

She carried a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was my phone.

"We've reviewed the recording."

She placed a portable speaker on the bedside table.

The room filled with Christmas music.

Laughter.

Dinner conversation.

The sound of the oven opening.

Then—

Meredith's footsteps.

The violent impact.

My scream.

The crash.

And finally...

Her whisper.

"That's what happens when you steal my brother. Next time, I'll make sure it lands on your face."

The detective pressed Stop.

"You never mentioned she whispered."

"I wasn't sure anyone else could hear it."

"The microphone did."

She smiled slightly.

"So did we."

For the first time since Christmas...

I felt something stronger than pain.

Hope.

The following afternoon...

Meredith Whitmore was arrested.

She looked stunned as handcuffs closed around her wrists.

Her mother screamed.

Her father demanded lawyers.

Daniel simply watched.

May you like

For once...

He said nothing.
