Chapter 14 - THE MAN HER FATHER CHOSE

Maya showed the note to Nathaniel.
He read it twice.
“Marcus did not betray us.”
“You are certain?”
“I trusted him with you.”
“You also trusted Bennett.”
Nathaniel’s face tightened.
The truth hurt.
Vance agreed to surrender his weapon and credentials until the claim was investigated.
He did not protest.
“If Adrian found evidence against me, follow it.”
“Where would he go?” Maya asked.
Vance examined the wording.
Original flight recorder.
Vivian lied about where the crash began.
Hargrove’s official report placed the first system failure seventeen minutes after takeoff.
Nathaniel’s notes described toxin release before the explosion.
If the flight recorder survived, it could identify the real sabotage sequence.
Vance remembered an abandoned aviation testing bunker near Ashford County.
Adrian’s car was found outside.
Maya insisted on going.
Vance remained under observation but joined them.
Inside the bunker, they found Adrian tied to a chair.
Celeste Warren stood beside a damaged flight recorder.
She held a gun.
“Remove your weapons.”
Federal officers surrounded the outer building.
But Celeste had connected explosives to the recorder.
One wrong movement would destroy the evidence and Adrian.
Vance lowered his weapon.
Celeste smiled.
“The loyal Colonel.”
“What do you want?”
“A public confession.”
“To what?”
“Killing the Ashfords.”
Maya stared at Vance.
Celeste activated an audio file.
A male voice spoke through static.
“Flight 702 must not reach Washington.”
The voice sounded like Vance.
Nathaniel went still.
Celeste played another recording.
“Remove the child from the crash site.”
Again, Vance’s voice.
Maya looked at him.
He did not deny it immediately.
That silence frightened her.
“Marcus?”
“The voice is mine.”
Nathaniel stepped forward.
“What did you do?”
Vance looked at Maya.
“Twenty-four years ago, I participated in Operation Silent Harbor.”
Celeste smiled.
“The confession begins.”
Vance continued.
Military intelligence learned that Vale planned to intercept the Ashford aircraft.
Vance ordered an undercover team to monitor the flight.
The first recording had been edited.
His full instruction was:
Flight 702 must not reach Washington without escort.
The second instruction was also incomplete.
Remove the child from the crash site before Vale’s extraction team arrives.
Vance had sent Bennett.
Bennett later believed Vance was compromised because Vale forged follow-up messages.
“Why didn’t you tell my father?” Maya asked.
“The operation was compartmentalized.”
Nathaniel’s anger rose.
“You used my family as bait.”
“I was trying to identify the full network.”
“You placed an escort too far away.”
“Yes.”
“Your operation failed.”
“Yes.”
Vance did not hide.
That mattered.
Celeste fired toward the ceiling.
“Enough noble remorse.”
She wanted the flight recorder because it captured one voice the conspiracy had kept hidden.
The person who activated the Nightglass device aboard the aircraft.
Celeste pressed play.
A woman’s voice filled the bunker.
“Samuel, begin the release.”
Maya recognized it.
Not Vivian.
Not the real Victoria.
Elena.
Maya turned toward her mother, who had joined through a secure video link.
Elena stared at the speaker.
“No.”
The recording continued.
“Begin the release before Nathaniel reaches the cockpit.”
Nathaniel looked shattered.
“Elena?”
She shook her head.
“I never said that.”
Celeste smiled.
“DNA can be forged.”
“Faces can be replaced.”
“So can voices.”
Vance stepped closer to the recorder.
“The date code is wrong.”
Celeste’s smile disappeared.
He pointed toward the device.
“This recorder was removed from a Sterling test aircraft, not Flight 702.”
The serial number had been partially filed away.
But the final digits remained.
Adrian had discovered the fraud and confronted Celeste.
She took him.
“Why create this?” Maya asked.
“To destroy your family from inside.”
Celeste raised the gun toward Nathaniel’s video screen.
“Vale understood that blood is strongest when it becomes suspicion.”
Adrian shifted inside the chair.
His hand had loosened one rope.
Maya saw it.
Celeste did not.
Adrian kicked the explosive trigger from her hand.
Vance tackled her.
The gun fired.
Federal officers entered.
Celeste was arrested.
The flight recorder remained intact.
Adrian looked at Maya.
“I’m sorry I wrote not to trust him.”
“You followed evidence.”
“I also left protection without warning.”
“You still think secrecy makes you useful.”
He lowered his head.
“Yes.”
The real recorder was later found inside the bunker wall.
It confirmed Vance’s escort operation.
It also recorded the final minutes after the crash.
Nathaniel’s voice.
Elena’s.
A security officer carrying Maya away.
And one sentence from Conrad Sterling.
“Leave the child alive.”
Vivian asked why.
Conrad answered:
“Because one day, she may open everything for us.”
Maya had not escaped the conspiracy.
May you like
She had been preserved for it.
Now she would make sure the future Conrad planned died with him.
