Chapter 10 - THE COMMAND VAULT

Ashford Command had been built beneath a granite estate overlooking the Atlantic.
The public mansion above it had remained closed since the family disappeared.
Below ground, military corridors stretched beneath the cliffs.
Vale led Maya and Nathaniel toward the command vault.
Elena sat restrained beside Julian.
Her face was bruised.
But her eyes were clear.
When she saw Nathaniel, the world seemed to stop.
They stared at each other across the room.
Twenty-four years of grief moved between them.
Nathaniel whispered her name.
“Elena.”
She began crying.
Vale pressed the Nightglass switch halfway.
“Touching.”
Nathaniel turned toward him.
“You will not leave this facility.”
“I do not need to.”
Vale believed the command patents were worth more than survival.
He planned to upload them to multiple offshore servers.
Once the systems spread, governments and corporations would compete to purchase access.
He called it balance.
Nathaniel called it treason.
Maya stepped toward Julian.
“Let me hold him.”
“No.”
“He needs his mother.”
“He needs your blood.”
Vale pointed toward two biometric panels.
“One hand from Nathaniel.”
“One from Maya.”
“Then the child confirms the inheritance line.”
Maya examined the chamber.
Emergency ventilation vents lined the ceiling.
A red medical override panel stood near Elena.
Adrian was supposed to enter through the lower tunnel.
There was no sign of him.
Vale attached a scanning cuff around Nathaniel’s wrist.
Then he forced Maya’s hand onto the first panel.
The system activated.
ASHFORD GENETIC LINE CONFIRMED.
The vault doors began opening.
Inside were encrypted servers and prototype navigation modules.
Vale smiled.
“After twenty-four years.”
Nathaniel looked at Maya.
Not at the vault.
At her.
The message was clear.
The legacy did not matter more than Julian.
Vale moved toward the second stage.
A small genetic reader unfolded beside the baby.
Elena shifted her chair.
The metal leg scraped.
Vale looked toward her.
She appeared weak.
Confused.
He dismissed her.
That was his mistake.
Elena had spent twenty-four years allowing captors to believe medication had destroyed her.
Her memory was damaged.
Her intelligence was not.
She kicked the red medical override.
The ventilation system shut down.
Emergency shutters sealed the toxin tube.
Vale spun.
Nathaniel struck him.
They fell against the console.
Maya ran toward Julian.
A guard grabbed her.
She drove her elbow into his throat.
He held on.
Then a shot echoed from the maintenance tunnel.
The guard fell.
Adrian emerged.
His wounded shoulder had reopened.
He fired at the ceiling lock.
The main security door released.
Vance’s team entered.
Vale broke free from Nathaniel and grabbed Julian’s carrier.
Maya reached him first.
She held the carrier while Vale pulled from the other side.
Julian screamed.
“Let go!” Maya shouted.
Vale smiled.
“You first.”
Nathaniel struck Vale’s wrist.
The activation switch fell.
Elena kicked it beneath the console.
Adrian lunged.
Vale fired.
The bullet hit Adrian in the chest.
He collapsed.
Maya pulled Julian free.
Vance fired into Vale’s shoulder.
Officers surrounded him.
Vale continued laughing.
“You cannot stop the upload.”
A progress bar glowed on the vault screen.
Eighty-two percent.
Nathaniel reached the controls.
The system demanded full Ashford authorization to cancel.
Maya placed one hand beside his.
ACCESS DENIED.
A third confirmation was required.
Julian.
Maya stared at the reader.
If she placed his hand against it, the system would recognize him.
It might also complete Vale’s theft.
Nathaniel understood the risk.
“The system was designed to protect inheritance continuity.”
“What do we do?”
“Trust the original command.”
Maya placed Julian’s tiny palm on the reader.
The screen flashed.
THREE-GENERATION LINE CONFIRMED.
Vale smiled from the floor.
Then the system spoke.
UNAUTHORIZED EXTRACTION DETECTED.
TOTAL ARCHIVE PURGE INITIATED.
His smile vanished.
Nathaniel had designed the system to destroy classified material if three Ashford generations were forced to authenticate during a breach.
The servers began erasing.
Vale screamed.
“No!”
He fought the officers.
“You are destroying billions!”
Nathaniel looked at him.
“I am protecting lives.”
The upload stopped at eighty-nine percent.
Every copied file became corrupted.
The command vault went dark.
Vale’s empire ended inside the system he tried to steal.
Maya looked toward Adrian.
Blood spread beneath him.
She handed Julian to Elena and knelt.
“Adrian.”
His eyes opened weakly.
“Is he safe?”
“Yes.”
“You?”
“Yes.”
He tried to smile.
“I finally did something without asking my mother.”
Maya pressed her hand against the wound.
“Stay awake.”
“I’m sorry.”
“You can be sorry later.”
Medics rushed forward.
Adrian’s pulse faded.
Maya shouted his name.
The man who betrayed her had also returned to save their child.
Whether he survived would not erase what he did.
But his final choice mattered.
Both truths could exist.
As Adrian was carried away, officers lifted Warren Vale.
The conspirator looked toward Nathaniel.
“You destroyed your own legacy.”
Nathaniel took Julian from Elena.
“No.”
May you like
He looked at Maya.
“I found it.”
