Chapter 13 - THE HART ESTATE

I walked toward the house with both hands visible.

The federal agents remained hidden beyond the tree line.

Gray had warned that anyone entering the property would trigger an explosion.

Thermal drones identified at least nine people inside the main house.

Six were children.

Two were adults.

The final person was Gray.

Sophie stood on the porch wearing only one shoe.

Her wrists were secured with plastic ties.

“Let her go,” I said.

“Bring me the bracelet.”

“It’s in the mailbox.”

Gray’s voice emerged from the dark doorway.

“You opened it.”

“We made a copy.”

“Of course you did.”

He stepped into view.

He was in his early sixties with silver hair and an ordinary face.

That was the most unsettling thing about him.

He did not look like a monster.

He looked like a banker.

A professor.

Someone who might hold a door open for a stranger.

He held a small black device in his left hand.

A trigger.

“Where is Evelyn?” I asked.

“Inside.”

“Is she hurt?”

“She is alive.”

“You said the children would be released.”

“They will be.”

“When?”

“When the council determines the evidence is contained.”

“You are the council now.”

Gray smiled.

“The council is an idea.”

“Ideas do not go to prison.”

“People do.”

“Sometimes.”

Behind him, I saw Evelyn descending the staircase.

Her suit was torn.

A bruise darkened one side of her face.

For the first time, she did not look powerful.

She looked old.

“Daniel,” she said.

Gray raised the trigger.

“Do not speak unless instructed.”

Evelyn looked at him with hatred.

“You were never going to let me leave.”

“No.”

“You served my father.”

“I protected the structure your father built.”

“I ran that structure for thirty years.”

“You endangered it for a personal inheritance dispute.”

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

“I endangered it because my daughter found out what we were.”

Gray’s expression did not change.

“Anna was sentimental.”

“Anna was better than both of us.”

The statement surprised me.

Evelyn’s eyes met mine.

“I did not order Anna’s death.”

“You ordered Michael to damage her brakes.”

“I ordered him to frighten her.”

“That distinction exists only in your mind.”

“I know.”

Gray moved closer to Sophie.

“We are not here to discuss grief.”

I studied the trigger.

A tiny light blinked near his thumb.

The tactical team needed a clear signal.

I had been given a transmitter hidden in my watch.

Pressing the upper button would tell them to advance.

But if Gray released the trigger, the house could explode.

“Where are the other parents?” I asked.

“Sedated.”

“Are they inside?”

“Yes.”

“Let me see them.”

“You are not in a position to request anything.”

“Then why bring me here?”

“You know the encryption sequence Anna used.”

“No.”

“Lily opened the vault.”

“With two keys.”

“Your fingerprint provided the final authorization.”

“You already have the evidence.”

“We need access to the master files.”

I understood.

The chip was not merely storage.

It contained a path to additional records.

Gray needed my biometric confirmation to access them.

He intended to force me to unlock everything.

Then he would destroy the estate with all witnesses inside.

“You will kill the children anyway,” I said.

“Their deaths will be blamed on Evelyn.”

Gray glanced toward her.

“A disgraced woman kidnapped several children and died during a confrontation.”

“The public will understand that story.”

Evelyn stared at him.

“You prepared this before you took me from the detention center.”

“Yes.”

“The fire.”

“The van.”

“The evidence planted at the hotel.”

“All of it.”

“You always planned to make me the final villain.”

“You made that very easy.”

For the first time, I saw Evelyn understand the full shape of her own life.

She had spent decades believing power protected her.

In reality, the council had protected itself.

She had always been replaceable.

Gray gestured toward the doorway.

“Come inside.”

I did not move.

“Release Sophie first.”

“No.”

“You need my fingerprint.”

“I also have your daughter’s uncle.”

A side door opened.

Two men dragged Michael into the hallway.

His face was swollen.

His injured arm hung uselessly at his side.

He had been removed from the protected hospital unit.

The council still had people inside law enforcement.

Michael looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

Gray pressed the muzzle of a pistol against his neck.

“Your brother’s fingerprint can access several secondary accounts.”

“But yours opens Anna’s archive.”

I stepped onto the porch.

The smell of gasoline grew stronger.

Tiny wires ran along the doorframe.

The entire house had been prepared.

As I passed Sophie, I whispered, “When I say Anna, close your eyes and fall.”

Gray pushed me into the foyer.

Four children sat together near the wall.

Sophie’s mother and another parent lay unconscious near the dining room.

Evelyn stood beside the staircase.

Michael was forced to kneel.

On a table sat a laptop and a biometric scanner.

Gray inserted the bracelet’s chip.

The screen displayed Anna’s encrypted archive.

PLACE AUTHORIZED FINGER ON SENSOR.

“Do it,” he said.

I placed my hand above the scanner but did not touch it.

“What happens after?”

“You become unnecessary.”

“Honest.”

“I have no reason to lie.”

“You have spent your entire life lying.”

“Not personally.”

“Anna.”

At the sound of her name, Sophie dropped to the floor.

I slammed the laptop shut and drove my elbow into Gray’s arm.

The trigger flew from his hand.

Evelyn caught it.

Gray raised the pistol.

Michael threw himself between us.

The gun fired.

Michael collapsed.

Evelyn stared at the trigger in her palm.

Gray lunged toward her.

She stepped backward onto the staircase.

For one suspended second, she could have handed it to him.

She could have saved herself.

Instead, she threw it toward me.

I caught it.

Federal agents stormed the house.

Gray fired twice.

Evelyn grabbed his arm.

They crashed against the railing.

A spark flashed beneath the front doorway.

One of the explosive circuits had activated.

The children screamed.

Smoke poured from the walls.

The house was going to burn.
