Chapter 12 - EVELYN’S ESCAPE

The public was told that Evelyn escaped during an electrical fire.
That was only partly true.
The fire had been deliberately started inside a maintenance room.
A detention officer used an emergency key to open Evelyn’s cell.
The same officer then vanished.
Security footage from the parking garage showed a black van leaving through a service gate.
The driver wore a gray coat.
Mr. Gray had either rescued Evelyn or abducted her.
Detective Collins believed the second possibility was more likely.
“Why would he take her alive?” I asked.
“Information.”
“About what?”
“The vault.”
“The bracelet.”
“The location of any remaining evidence.”
Lily and I were moved again.
This time, our location was not entered into any electronic system.
We stayed inside a federal training facility surrounded by armed agents.
Michael was transferred to a protected medical unit.
Richard Vale remained unconscious.
Judge Mercer and the Bennett family were still missing.
The investigation expanded across three states.
Federal agents froze every account connected to the Hart Legacy Council.
Hospitals reviewed sealed custody cases.
Judges recused themselves.
Families began calling hotlines with stories that sounded painfully similar.
A wealthy donor appeared after a medical crisis.
A parent was suddenly labeled unstable.
A child vanished into a sealed guardianship arrangement.
Anna had discovered an entire machine built to separate vulnerable families.
Evelyn had inherited it.
She had also become trapped inside it.
That did not make her innocent.
It only meant there were worse people behind her.
At midnight, my new phone rang.
The number was blocked.
Detective Collins traced the call while I answered on speaker.
“Daniel.”
Evelyn’s voice sounded weak.
“Where are you?”
“I don’t know.”
“Who has you?”
“He calls himself Gray.”
“Is Michael with you?”
“No.”
“Where is Sophie Bennett?”
A pause followed.
“She is alive.”
“And her mother?”
“Alive.”
“Where?”
“I need something first.”
“You nearly killed my daughter.”
“And now I may be the only person who can save another child.”
“You don’t get to negotiate.”
“I know where Gray is taking them.”
“Tell me.”
“Bring Lily’s bracelet to the old Hart estate.”
Detective Collins wrote on a notepad.
KEEP HER TALKING.
“I won’t bring Lily anywhere.”
“Only the bracelet.”
“What is inside it?”
“You already know.”
“Then why do you need it?”
“The council requires the original evidence to dissolve the emergency protocol.”
“What emergency protocol?”
“If the council is exposed, every protected child is relocated.”
My stomach turned.
“How many children?”
“Seven current placements.”
“They will disappear before morning.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
“Gray carries the route list.”
“Help us find him.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because he is listening.”
A man’s voice entered the call.
“Good evening, Mr. Hayes.”
It was calm.
Educated.
Almost friendly.
“Who are you?”
“Someone who has protected your family’s reputation for a very long time.”
“You murdered Anna.”
“No.”
“Your brother created that tragedy.”
“I merely ensured it remained private.”
“Where is Sophie?”
“Safe.”
“She was kidnapped.”
“Such words are emotionally satisfying but legally imprecise.”
“What do you want?”
“The original chip inside Lily’s medical bracelet.”
“You can have a copy.”
“A copy can be manipulated.”
“We require the original.”
“Why?”
“Because the council’s members must be assured that the evidence has been destroyed.”
“Then you plan to kill Evelyn.”
Evelyn inhaled sharply.
Gray did not deny it.
“You will place the bracelet inside the mailbox at the old Hart estate.”
“Afterward, the Bennett family will be released.”
“How do I know they’re alive?”
A child began crying in the background.
A woman whispered, “It’s okay, Sophie.”
Then the call returned to Gray.
“You have two hours.”
The line went dead.
Agents traced the signal to three different towers.
Gray had routed the call through moving repeaters.
The old Hart estate stood abandoned outside the city.
It had belonged to Evelyn’s father.
The property contained forty acres of woods, several outbuildings, and an underground storm shelter.
Federal agents planned to surround it.
I would deliver a decoy bracelet.
Lily would remain at the training facility.
I hated the plan.
Sarah hated it too.
But Sophie and her mother had no time.
Before I left, Lily removed the silver bracelet and placed it in my hand.
“This is the fake one?”
“No.”
“You’re taking the real one?”
“The chip has already been copied.”
“But Mommy gave it to me.”
“I’ll bring it back.”
She looked directly into my eyes.
“Don’t promise things you can’t control.”
Anna used to say the same thing.
I knelt and kissed her forehead.
“Then I promise I will do everything possible to come back.”
The estate appeared through the trees shortly before two in the morning.
Its windows were dark.
I walked alone toward the rusted mailbox while tactical teams waited beyond the property line.
I placed the bracelet inside.
Nothing happened.
Then a light turned on in the upper floor of the house.
A figure appeared behind the window.
Evelyn.
She raised one hand and pressed it against the glass.
Another figure moved behind her.
Gray.
The front door opened.
Sophie Bennett stepped onto the porch.
Her hands were tied.
Gray’s voice came through a speaker hidden near the mailbox.
“Walk to the house.”
“That wasn’t the agreement.”
“The agreement has changed.”
Sophie began crying.
Then I noticed movement near the barn.
A second child stood in the darkness.
Then a third.
Gray had not brought one kidnapped family to the estate.
May you like
He had brought every child connected to the council’s active cases.
And the building behind them smelled strongly of gasoline.
