CHAPTER 5 – The Family We Chose

One year later...

Our daughter took her first steps across the living room.

Straight toward Alejandro.

He laughed as he scooped her into his arms.

The sound filled our home.

A home that finally felt safe.

The investigation had uncovered everything.

Margaret had intercepted mail for nearly a year.

She had bribed a private investigator.

Paid an unethical attorney.

Forged government documents.

Even attempted to manipulate military records.

Every accomplice faced criminal charges.

Justice had reached every corner of the conspiracy.

Sometimes I still remembered the iron.

The smoke.

The fear.

For months, I woke from nightmares.

Alejandro never complained.

Whenever I startled awake, he reached for my hand before I even asked.

"You and our little girl are safe," he would whisper.

Eventually...

I believed him.

One warm Saturday afternoon, we visited the military memorial where everyone had once believed Alejandro's name would be engraved.

Instead, he stood beside me.

Alive.

Holding our daughter.

She reached for his medals with tiny curious fingers.

He smiled.

"Easy, little soldier."

She giggled.

I realized then that families aren't protected by blood alone.

They're protected by courage.

By truth.

By the people who choose one another every single day.

As we walked away hand in hand, I glanced back only once.

Not because I was afraid.

But because I understood something at last.

The woman who tried to steal my child had lost the only thing she could never force anyone to give her.

Love.

And that was a victory no courtroom could ever measure.
