Chapter 12 - The Night My Son Arrived

Labor began at 2:13 in the morning.
Not dramatically.
No cinematic flood.
Just a sharp pain.
Then another.
Then my water broke across my father’s kitchen floor while I was eating cereal.
I stared down.
Damian stared down.
Claire, who had been sleeping in the guest room after a late strategy meeting, appeared in the doorway.
“Oh,” she said.
Another contraction hit.
I gripped the counter.
Damian became completely useless.
The man who controlled billions of dollars and terrified boardrooms could not remember where he placed his phone.
Claire shoved my hospital bag into his hands.
“Car.”
He nodded.
“Car.”
“Now, Damian.”
“Right.”
I would have laughed if I had not been trying to breathe through pain.
At the hospital, security was already waiting.
Marcus had been legally notified when I entered active labor because the court required notification.
He arrived thirty minutes later.
He was not allowed upstairs.
He demanded access.
The judge had already ruled otherwise.
My medical decisions were mine.
For ten hours, the world narrowed to breathing, pain, fear, and the steady voices of nurses.
Then at 12:41 p.m., my son entered the world screaming.
The sound broke me open.
They placed him against my chest.
Tiny.
Warm.
Angry.
Alive.
I sobbed.
“Hi.”
His fingers curled around mine.
“Hi, baby.”
I named him Thomas James Whitmore.
Thomas for my father.
James because I liked it.
Not Sterling.
Whitmore.
When Marcus learned the name, he lost control downstairs.
Security removed him from the hospital after he punched a wall and threatened Damian.
The threat was recorded.
By evening, it was in Claire’s evidence folder.
I looked at my sleeping son.
His entire hand could barely wrap around my finger.
For months everyone had talked about him like an inheritance.
An heir.
A bargaining chip.
A Sterling.
But holding him, I understood how obscene all of that was.
He belonged to no dynasty.
He was a baby.
May you like
My baby.
And my only job was to make sure he grew up never believing love had to be earned through obedience.
