Chapter 11 - Evelyn Breaks

Evelyn asked to meet me.

I refused.

Then she sent a handwritten letter.

Not an apology.

A warning.

Marcus is more dangerous than you understand.

I agreed to meet her at Claire’s office.

Evelyn arrived without jewelry.

Without makeup.

Without the armor of wealth.

For the first time, she looked old.

“You hate me.”

“Yes.”

She flinched.

Good.

“I deserve that.”

“Yes.”

Her mouth tightened.

Apparently accountability was harder than diamonds.

Then she told me something I did not expect.

Marcus had forged her signatures on several foundation transfers.

“He told me they were tax restructurings.”

“You expect me to believe you knew nothing?”

“No.”

She looked at me.

“I knew we moved money.”

My disgust must have shown.

“But I didn’t know how much.”

“So you’re not innocent.”

“No.”

It was the first honest thing I had ever heard her say.

Then she slid an envelope toward me.

Inside were copies of Marcus’s messages to a private investigator.

The investigator had been following me for months.

Photographing doctors’ appointments.

Friends.

My father’s house.

Even potential daycare centers.

One instruction was highlighted.

Find anything supporting emotional instability before delivery.

Another message was worse.

If nothing exists, create context.

I looked at Evelyn.

“Why give me this?”

Her eyes filled with something like shame.

“Because he told me yesterday that if federal investigators question me, I should take responsibility.”

I laughed once.

“So now that he betrayed you, I suddenly deserve protection?”

“No.”

She looked down.

“You deserved it before.”

That did not earn forgiveness.

May you like

But it earned usefulness.

And sometimes justice begins with people who are far too late discovering a conscience.
