Chapter 8: The Key Inside the Watch

The screen flashed red.

09:58

Claire stared at the countdown.

For one second, she couldn't hear anything except the pounding of her own heart.

Then Daniel's voice cut through the basement.

“Claire.”

She looked at him.

“The transfer is moving.”

John's face hardened.

“How much?”

“Forty-two million.”

Daniel turned his laptop toward them.

“It's being routed through three shell companies. The first one is registered in Delaware. The second is offshore. The third—”

He stopped.

Claire's eyes narrowed.

“What?”

Daniel swallowed.

“The final receiving entity is Sterling Crest Strategic Holdings.”

Silence.

Claire stepped closer.

“That company doesn't have authority to move forty-two million.”

“It does now,” Daniel said. “Someone altered the authorization chain.”

Claire looked down at the old watch in her hand.

Her father had given it to her when she was twenty-one.

She had worn it for years.

Never once had she questioned why the back felt slightly heavier than it should.

John pointed toward it.

“Open it.”

Claire removed the small metal clasp.

Nothing happened.

She tried again.

Then she remembered something.

The tiny scratch beneath the crown.

Three short lines.

One long.

She pressed them in sequence.

Click.

The back of the watch opened.

Inside was a thin black chip no larger than her fingernail.

Daniel stared.

“What the hell is that?”

“A corporate security key,” John said.

Claire looked at him.

“You knew it was there.”

“I knew what it could do.”

“That's not the same answer.”

John didn't flinch.

“No. It isn't.”

Claire pulled the chip free.

Daniel immediately connected a secure reader to his laptop.

The moment the key touched the device, the screen went black.

Then a single line appeared.

IDENTITY CONFIRMED.

CLAIRE BENNETT.

PRESIDENTIAL AUTHORIZATION RESTORED.

The countdown disappeared.

For three seconds, there was nothing.

Then dozens of encrypted files opened.

Bank transfers.

Board resolutions.

Private communications.

Hidden subsidiaries.

Every document had one thing in common.

Someone had been slowly moving pieces of Sterling Crest into companies controlled by Marcus Vane.

Claire's jaw tightened.

“How long?”

Daniel scanned the dates.

“Four years.”

John closed his eyes.

Claire turned toward him.

“You knew.”

“I suspected.”

“You knew enough to hide it.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“You protected me by letting my husband into my company?”

John's expression cracked.

“Ethan was supposed to be watched.”

Claire laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“Watched?”

She pointed at the screen.

“He stole one-point-four million dollars.”

John said nothing.

“He changed the ownership structure of one of my subsidiaries.”

Still nothing.

“And he brought another woman into my house while they were trying to dismantle my company.”

John finally lowered his head.

“I was wrong.”

Claire stared at him.

That sentence meant more than any excuse could have.

Daniel suddenly leaned toward the screen.

“Wait.”

A file had opened.

PROJECT HARBOR — FINAL ACQUISITION

Claire clicked it.

The first page contained a list of names.

Marcus Vane.

Chloe Harper.

Ethan Bennett.

Margaret Bennett.

And one name Claire hadn't expected.

Caroline Bennett.

Her mother.

Claire stopped breathing.

“No.”

John looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“She wasn't supposed to be on that list.”

Claire turned slowly.

“What did you say?”

John stood.

“I told you your mother was watching me.”

“You never told me she was working with Marcus.”

“I didn't know if she was.”

Claire pointed at the document.

“She signed it.”

John moved toward the laptop.

“That's not possible.”

Daniel enlarged the signature.

The room became silent.

Claire knew that handwriting.

She had seen it on birthday cards.

School forms.

Letters.

Her mother's signature was unmistakable.

John stared at it.

Then his phone rang.

Everyone froze.

He looked at the screen.

CAROLINE.

Claire reached for it.

John stopped her.

“Don't.”

“Why?”

“Because if she's calling now, she knows the key has been activated.”

The phone continued ringing.

Claire took it anyway.

She answered.

“Hello, Mother.”

Silence.

Then Caroline spoke.

Her voice was strangely calm.

“I was wondering when you would finally find the watch.”

Claire's blood ran cold.

“You knew about it.”

“I knew your father would eventually give it to you.”

“You signed Project Harbor.”

Another pause.

“Yes.”

John stepped closer.

Claire raised a hand, stopping him.

“Why?”

Caroline's voice softened.

“Because your father made me choose between losing you and losing everything.”

Claire frowned.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It will.”

A loud crack suddenly echoed above them.

Then another.

Gunfire.

Daniel dropped behind the table.

John grabbed Claire's arm.

“Down!”

Caroline was still on the phone.

Claire heard her mother's voice.

“Marcus is there, isn't he?”

Claire froze.

“How do you know?”

“Because he always comes when the money moves.”

The call ended.

Claire looked at John.

Then toward the ceiling.

Footsteps were moving through the farmhouse.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Someone had found them.

Daniel whispered.

“We have maybe thirty seconds.”

Claire looked at the screen.

The security key was still connected.

And a new message appeared.

TRANSFER FROZEN.

Then another.

COUNTER-TRANSFER AVAILABLE.

Claire's eyes hardened.

“Good.”

John stared at her.

“What are you going to do?”

May you like

Claire reached for the keyboard.

“Take back everything they stole.”
