CHAPTER 2 The Deed on the Table

At 7:12 the next morning, Ethan woke up believing he had won.
I knew because Daniel had someone watching the house.
Not to spy on Ethan.
To document everything.
Every vehicle.
Every person entering the property.
Every package.
Every movement.
Every change they made after locking me out.
I had learned one thing during fifteen years of running Sterling Crest Group:
Never interrupt someone while they're making a mistake.
Let them finish.
Let them become confident.
Let them create evidence.
Then take everything away.
My temporary suite at the Four Seasons overlooked downtown Houston.
Normally, I loved the view.
That morning, I barely noticed it.
I sat at the conference table in a gray silk blouse while three attorneys sat across from me.
Nathan Brooks was the oldest.
He was also the one I trusted most.
He had handled Sterling Crest acquisitions, corporate disputes, property negotiations, and two hostile takeovers without ever raising his voice.
He placed a thick folder on the table.
“Claire, before we do anything, I need you to answer one question.”
I looked at him.
“Which one?”
“Do you want Ethan out of the property immediately?”
“Yes.”
“Or do you want to destroy his position completely?”
I didn't hesitate.
“Both.”
Nathan nodded.
“Good.”
He opened the folder.
“The deed is straightforward.”
He slid a certified copy toward me.
My name was there.
CLAIRE BENNETT.
Not Ethan.
Not Margaret.
Not Ethan and Claire jointly.
Mine.
Sole owner.
Purchased seven years earlier through Sterling Crest's private real-estate holding company.
I had deliberately placed the property under a structure that kept my personal name away from public databases while still preserving my ownership rights.
Nathan tapped the document.
“They changed the locks without your authorization.”
“Yes.”
“They moved another person into the property.”
“Yes.”
“Your husband is still legally married to you.”
“Yes.”
“And they are currently occupying a residence owned by you without your permission.”
“Yes.”
Nathan leaned back.
“Then this is going to be very unpleasant for them.”
Daniel smiled.
“I thought that was the objective.”
Nathan ignored him.
“There is one complication.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“Chloe.”
“What about her?”
“She claims Ethan told her he owns the house.”
I stared at him.
“So?”
“If she's pregnant, she may attempt to portray herself as an innocent party.”
“She isn't.”
“Can you prove that?”
I looked at Daniel.
He placed another folder on the table.
“Already handled.”
Nathan opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Chloe entering Ethan's office.
Chloe leaving a hotel.
Chloe meeting Ethan's financial adviser.
Chloe sitting in Ethan's car.
Then one photograph.
I stared at it.
Ethan was holding Chloe's hand.
They were standing outside a private fertility clinic.
My jaw tightened.
Nathan looked at me.
“You knew about this?”
“No.”
“Interesting.”
Daniel added quietly,
“There's more.”
He opened his laptop.
A bank statement appeared.
A transfer.
$180,000.
From Ethan's personal account.
To Chloe.
Then another.
$75,000.
Then another.
$40,000.
All within six months.
Nathan stared at the screen.
“Where did Ethan get this money?”
I knew the answer.
“He didn't.”
Nathan looked at me.
I continued.
“It came from Sterling Crest.”
Silence.
Daniel nodded.
“We traced the transfers.”
Nathan's expression hardened.
“Your husband has been diverting company money.”
“Apparently.”
“How much?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Preliminary estimate?”
“Yes.”
“Just over $1.4 million.”
I leaned back.
For seven years, I had thought Ethan was merely financially irresponsible.
Apparently, he was something worse.
He wasn't drowning.
He had been drinking from my company.
Nathan closed the laptop.
“Then the house is the least of his problems.”
I stood.
“Send the demand.”
Nathan nodded.
“To Ethan?”
“To everyone.”
He raised an eyebrow.
“Everyone?”
“Ethan.”
“Margaret.”
“Chloe.”
“Her attorney if she has one.”
“And the property manager.”
Nathan smiled.
“Anything else?”
“Yes.”
I walked toward the window.
“Give them until noon.”
“And if they refuse?”
I looked down at Houston.
“Then we stop asking.”
At 9:03 a.m., Ethan received the first letter.
At 9:11, Margaret received hers.
At 9:19, Chloe received hers.
At 9:27, the house's security system was remotely transferred back under Sterling Crest control.
At 9:31, the gates stopped opening.
At 9:34, Ethan's corporate credit card declined at a luxury restaurant downtown.
At 9:37, his company vehicle was remotely disabled.
At 9:42, his private driver received a message telling him his services were no longer authorized.
At 9:50, Ethan called me.
I watched his name appear on my screen.
I didn't answer.
He called again.
I ignored him.
A third time.
I silenced the phone.
Then a text appeared.
Claire, what the hell are you doing?
I smiled.
Another message.
My car won't start.
Then:
My card was declined.
Then:
Call me NOW.
I placed the phone face down.
Nathan looked amused.
“You don't want to respond?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because he's still confused.”
Daniel laughed.
“He's about to become less confused.”
At 10:18, another call came through.
This time it was Margaret.
I answered.
“Hello?”
Her voice exploded through the speaker.
“Claire! What have you done?”
I calmly asked,
“Good morning, Margaret.”
“You've frozen Ethan's accounts!”
“Some of them.”
“You have no right!”
“I own the company.”
Silence.
Then:
“You can't punish my son because you're angry!”
“I haven't punished him.”
I paused.
“I'm auditing him.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means we're determining how much company money he has taken.”
Her breathing changed.
“What are you talking about?”
I smiled.
“You should ask your son.”
She hung up.
I looked at Nathan.
“Send the forensic audit team.”
He nodded.
“Already moving.”
At 10:47, Ethan called again.
This time I answered.
“Claire.”
“Yes?”
His voice was different.
No arrogance.
No confidence.
Fear.
“What did you do?”
“Nothing.”
“You've shut down my accounts.”
“Corporate accounts.”
“You know exactly what I'm talking about.”
“I do.”
“You can't do this.”
“I can.”
“I'm your husband.”
I closed my eyes.
That sentence almost made me laugh.
Almost.
“You remembered that?”
“What is that supposed to mean?”
“You forgot you were my husband last night.”
Silence.
Then he lowered his voice.
“Claire, let's talk.”
“We're talking.”
“Privately.”
“No.”
“Please.”
That word stopped me.
Ethan had never said please when he thought he had the upper hand.
“Why?”
“Because I made a mistake.”
I looked at Nathan.
He silently mouthed:
Don't go.
I ignored him.
“What mistake?”
“I shouldn't have handled things this way.”
“This way?”
“I should have told you before changing the locks.”
I almost smiled.
“So the problem was timing?”
“Claire.”
“You replaced me with a pregnant woman.”
“It's complicated.”
“No.”
I looked out the window.
“It isn't.”
He went quiet.
Then he said something I didn't expect.
“Chloe isn't pregnant.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
“I need you to listen.”
I sat down slowly.
“What did you just say?”
“She lied.”
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
“You said she was three months pregnant.”
“I believed her.”
“You told your mother.”
“I know.”
“You threw me out of my house.”
“I know.”
“And now you're telling me she's not pregnant?”
“I found out this morning.”
I stared at Nathan.
His expression changed.
He immediately motioned for me to put the call on speaker.
I did.
Ethan continued.
“Claire, please. I need you to come back.”
Nathan wrote something on a notepad.
Ask him why.
I did.
“Why?”
“Because I think Chloe planned this.”
Nathan pointed at the paper.
Ask what she wants.
I asked.
Ethan went silent.
Then he whispered,
“Your company.”
My entire body went still.
Nathan's expression hardened.
Daniel stopped typing.
Ethan continued.
“She asked me about Sterling Crest months ago.”
I slowly stood.
“Why?”
“I thought she was just interested in my work.”
“But?”
“But she knew things she shouldn't have known.”
“What things?”
“Your name.”
I froze.
Ethan's voice dropped.
“She knew you were connected to Sterling Crest.”
Nathan's eyes narrowed.
“How?”
“I don't know.”
I closed my eyes.
Seven years.
Seven years of secrecy.
I had been careful.
Almost obsessive.
No public appearances.
No interviews.
No photographs.
No corporate events with Ethan.
He had always believed I worked as a senior employee.
He never knew I owned the company.
So how did Chloe know?
Ethan whispered,
“She asked me how much Sterling Crest was worth.”
My stomach tightened.
“What did you tell her?”
“The truth.”
“And what did she say?”
He hesitated.
“She said…”
“What?”
“She said she could help me take it.”
Silence.
Nathan stood.
“Claire.”
I nodded.
Ethan continued.
“She's not just after me.”
I looked at the rain beginning to gather against the window.
“What is she after?”
May you like
Ethan answered.
“She's after you.”
