CHAPTER 10 — SOMEONE WAS WAITING INSIDE

The gates of Sterling House were supposed to be impenetrable.
My father had spent decades making sure of that.
Two security checkpoints.
Cameras covering every entrance.
Motion sensors along the perimeter.
Armed guards inside the main building.
And yet, when our convoy entered the property at 4:39 p.m., every camera went dark.
One by one.
The first monitor flickered.
Then the second.
Then all six screens in the security vehicle went black.
My father noticed immediately.
"Stop."
The driver slammed on the brakes.
The SUV stopped beneath the stone archway.
Nobody moved.
Rain began tapping against the windshield.
My father looked at the security chief.
"How long?"
"Thirty seconds."
"That's too long."
He reached for his weapon.
I had never seen him carry one before.
"Dad?"
He looked at me.
"Stay inside."
"What happened?"
"Someone has breached the property."
My stomach tightened.
"But how?"
He didn't answer.
The security chief checked his radio.
"Sir."
"What?"
"Gate two is open."
My father turned sharply.
"Who opened it?"
"We don't know."
Then another voice came through the radio.
"Sir..."
The man's voice shook.
"There's nobody at gate two."
My father's expression hardened.
"Then who opened it?"
Silence.
A second later, the radio went dead.
My father looked at me.
"Stay in the vehicle."
He opened the door.
I grabbed his arm.
"Don't."
He looked down at my hand.
"It's my house."
"And I'm your daughter."
He gave me a tired smile.
"Exactly."
Then he stepped out.
4:43 P.M.
The mansion was silent.
Too silent.
My father entered through the front doors with four security officers behind him.
The marble foyer looked untouched.
No broken glass.
No signs of forced entry.
No footprints.
Nothing.
Then one of the guards stopped.
"Sir."
He pointed toward the staircase.
A single white orchid lay on the floor.
My father's face changed.
He knew exactly what it meant.
"Nobody touches it."
The guard froze.
My father walked closer.
Beside the orchid was a small envelope.
No name.
No seal.
Just one word.
CLARE.
He didn't open it.
Instead, he looked at the security chief.
"Find the breach."
"Yes, sir."
The team split.
My father remained in the foyer.
Then the lights went out.
Total darkness.
I was still sitting inside the SUV.
I heard shouting.
Then—
A gunshot.
My heart stopped.
"Dad!"
The driver locked the doors.
"Mrs. Hayes, stay down."
Another gunshot echoed through the mansion.
Then silence.
I reached for the door.
"Open it."
"No."
"That's my father."
"Your father ordered us to keep you here."
I stared at the mansion.
Every window was dark.
Then one light came on.
Second floor.
My mother's old bedroom.
I knew immediately.
Someone was inside.
4:49 P.M.
My father stood in the darkness.
His gun was raised.
"Come out."
Nothing.
He moved through the hallway.
One step.
Then another.
A shadow crossed the far wall.
He fired.
The bullet struck the ceiling.
A man stepped into the light.
Daniel Cross.
My father lowered his weapon slightly.
"Daniel."
Daniel smiled.
"You haven't changed."
"You're supposed to be dead."
"So are a lot of people."
My father's eyes narrowed.
"Why are you here?"
Daniel looked toward the stairs.
"To warn you."
"About Alexander?"
"Not anymore."
My father froze.
"Then who?"
Daniel's expression hardened.
"The person who controls Alexander."
Silence.
"Who?"
Daniel stepped closer.
"You still haven't figured it out."
"Tell me."
Daniel shook his head.
"You're looking in the wrong direction."
My father tightened his grip.
"Then point me toward the right one."
Daniel looked toward the front doors.
"Matthew."
My father frowned.
"Matthew is a pawn."
"Yes."
"Then why are you naming him?"
"Because pawns sometimes realize they're being sacrificed."
My father stared at him.
"What did he find?"
Daniel's voice dropped.
"The original agreement."
My father went still.
"The one from 1999?"
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
"Where is it?"
Daniel looked toward the second floor.
"With Clare."
My father's face changed.
"No."
Daniel's expression was grim.
"That's why they're coming."
4:55 P.M.
The driver's phone rang.
He answered.
"Security."
A voice spoke.
His face drained.
He turned toward me.
"Mrs. Hayes..."
"What?"
"We have a problem."
"What?"
"The perimeter is compromised."
I looked toward the mansion.
"I know."
"No."
He shook his head.
"It's worse."
He showed me his phone.
The security cameras were coming back online.
One screen at a time.
The first showed the driveway.
Empty.
The second showed the east gate.
Empty.
The third showed the rear garden.
Empty.
Then the fourth screen appeared.
The image was from inside the mansion.
My mother's bedroom.
I saw my father.
Daniel Cross.
And behind them—
a third man.
Standing perfectly still.
My blood ran cold.
"Who is that?"
The driver didn't answer.
The image suddenly disappeared.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?"
A man's voice.
Calm.
Almost gentle.
"Clare."
I recognized him.
Alexander Vale.
"Where are you?"
"Safe."
He laughed softly.
"That's what your father keeps telling you."
My heart raced.
"What do you want?"
"I want the truth."
"What truth?"
"The truth your father buried."
I looked toward the mansion.
"You already know it."
"No."
His voice became colder.
"I know the version Edward created."
"What does that mean?"
"It means your mother didn't die because she discovered my money."
My breath caught.
"Then why did she die?"
Silence.
Then Alexander said:
"Because she discovered who you really are."
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
My hands were shaking.
My father came running out of the mansion.
"Clare!"
He opened the SUV door.
"Get out."
I looked at him.
"What did he mean?"
My father froze.
"Who called you?"
"Alexander."
His face went pale.
"He said Mom discovered who I really am."
My father didn't answer.
"Dad."
Silence.
"Dad!"
He looked away.
"Get her to the safe room."
I stared at him.
"No."
"Clare."
"I want the truth."
"Not here."
"Then where?"
He looked at Daniel.
Daniel stepped closer.
His expression was grim.
"She's ready."
My father closed his eyes.
Then he nodded.
"All right."
He reached inside his coat.
Pulled out a small brass key.
And placed it in my palm.
"This belonged to your mother."
I stared at it.
"What does it open?"
My father's voice was barely a whisper.
"Her private archive."
5:03 P.M.
We entered the hidden room beneath Sterling House.
A biometric lock scanned my father's hand.
Then his eye.
The door opened.
Inside was a room I had never known existed.
Rows of filing cabinets.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
Old legal documents.
Everything my father had hidden for decades.
Daniel entered behind us.
He looked at me.
"Your mother built this."
I stared at him.
"My mother?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because she knew one day someone would come looking."
"For what?"
Daniel looked at my father.
My father didn't speak.
Daniel turned back to me.
"For you."
I felt a chill.
He walked to the far wall.
There was a photograph.
My mother holding me as a baby.
I had seen it a thousand times.
But beneath it was something I had never noticed.
A date.
March 14, 1999.
Daniel pointed to it.
"That's the night everything changed."
My father stood behind me.
"Clare..."
I turned.
"What happened that night?"
He finally said it.
"The woman you called your mother wasn't your biological mother."
The room disappeared around me.
I couldn't breathe.
"What?"
My father looked devastated.
"Your mother adopted you."
I stared at him.
"Who were my real parents?"
Nobody answered.
Then the lights flickered.
Daniel looked toward the security monitor.
A red warning appeared.
PERIMETER BREACH — NORTH GATE.
Another warning.
SOUTH GATE.
Then another.
MAIN ENTRANCE.
My father grabbed my arm.
"We have to go."
I couldn't move.
"Who am I?"
He looked at me.
Before he could answer—
every monitor in the archive turned on at once.
One image appeared.
A newborn baby.
A hospital bracelet.
A woman's name.
And beneath it—
CLARE VALE.
My father's face went completely white.
Daniel whispered:
"Oh God."
I stared at the screen.
Vale.
The same name as Alexander.
And suddenly—
I understood why Alexander had been waiting seven years.
He wasn't coming for NexusCore.
May you like
He wasn't coming for my father's money.
He was coming for me.
