CHAPTER 12 — THE FATHER I NEVER KNEW

My father's phone remained against his ear.
Neither of us spoke.
Alexander's breathing was barely audible.
Then he said:
"Edward, you know this cannot continue."
My father's voice was cold.
"You've already lost."
Alexander laughed softly.
"No."
A pause.
"You have."
The call ended.
I stared at my father.
"Who is my real father?"
He looked at me.
His face told me the answer would hurt.
"Clare..."
"Don't."
I stepped backward.
"No more secrets."
Daniel lowered his eyes.
My father finally said:
"Your biological father was named Jonathan Vale."
The name struck me.
"Vale?"
He nodded.
"Alexander's older brother."
I couldn't breathe.
"Then I'm..."
"Yes."
"Alexander's niece."
"Yes."
I laughed once.
It sounded hollow.
"So my entire life..."
"You were protected."
"From my own family."
"From Alexander."
I looked at him.
"And from Jonathan?"
My father's eyes changed.
"Especially from Jonathan."
6:21 P.M.
My father took me into a private room.
He closed the door.
Daniel remained outside.
For the first time, there were no guards between us.
No lawyers.
No security team.
Just a father and a daughter.
Even if biology said otherwise.
My father sat across from me.
"Jonathan was different from Alexander."
"How?"
"He believed the family should be dismantled."
I frowned.
"Dismantled?"
"The Vale network."
My father nodded.
"He wanted to expose everything Alexander had built."
"And my mother?"
"She helped him."
My heart tightened.
"They were working together."
"Yes."
"Then what happened?"
My father looked down.
"Jonathan disappeared first."
"When?"
"Three months before your birth."
My eyes widened.
"What happened to him?"
"We don't know."
"You don't know?"
"No body was ever found."
I stared at him.
"Then how do you know he's dead?"
"We don't."
Silence.
I felt the room become colder.
"You're saying my biological father might still be alive?"
My father didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
6:39 P.M.
Daniel entered.
"We have movement."
My father stood.
"Where?"
"Manhattan."
"Alexander?"
"No."
Daniel handed him a photograph.
My father studied it.
His face changed.
I took the photograph.
A man stood outside a subway entrance.
Older.
Gray hair.
Dark coat.
His face was partially hidden.
But there was something about him.
Something familiar.
I stared at the photograph.
"Who is that?"
Daniel looked at me.
"That's Jonathan Vale."
My heart stopped.
"No."
My father looked at Daniel.
"Where did you get this?"
"Security camera from twenty minutes ago."
"Twenty minutes?"
"Yes."
I looked at the photograph again.
The man had turned slightly.
His eyes were visible.
And I recognized them.
Not because I'd seen him before.
Because I'd seen them somewhere else.
In my own face.
6:47 P.M.
My father's phone rang again.
He answered.
"Sterling."
A distorted voice spoke.
"Edward."
My father went still.
I recognized the voice.
Jonathan.
My father's hand tightened around the phone.
"Where are you?"
"Closer than you think."
"What do you want?"
"Her."
My father looked at me.
"No."
Jonathan laughed quietly.
"You've been lying to her for twenty-six years."
"I protected her."
"You stole her."
My father stepped toward the window.
"I saved her life."
"You took my daughter."
The words echoed through the room.
My heart stopped.
I whispered:
"Dad..."
My father closed his eyes.
Jonathan continued.
"You told Elena I was dead."
My father's face became rigid.
"I didn't know."
"You knew enough."
"What happened to you?"
"Alexander happened."
Silence.
Then Jonathan said:
"He's coming for Clare."
My father answered:
"So are you."
A pause.
"Yes."
"Why?"
Jonathan's voice softened.
"Because she's my daughter."
The call ended.
I stared at my father.
"Is it true?"
He couldn't answer.
I stepped closer.
"Is he really my father?"
My father nodded.
"Yes."
My chest tightened.
"And you knew?"
"From the beginning."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because if Jonathan found you, Alexander would find you."
"And now?"
My father looked at me.
"Now they both have."
7:03 P.M.
Matthew sat alone in the back of a taxi.
He had no idea where he was going.
His phone had been ringing for twenty minutes.
He ignored every call.
Then one message appeared.
COME TO THE OLD CHURCH ON WEST 47TH.
No name.
No explanation.
He almost deleted it.
Then another message arrived.
YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY CLARE WAS CHOSEN.
Matthew stared at the screen.
He told the driver:
"Change direction."
7:16 P.M.
The old church was empty.
Matthew entered through a side door.
A single man waited near the altar.
Gray hair.
Dark coat.
Matthew stopped.
"Jonathan Vale."
Jonathan turned.
"You know my name."
"I know everything now."
Jonathan smiled.
"No."
He stepped closer.
"You know what they wanted you to know."
Matthew swallowed.
"Why Clare?"
Jonathan looked at him.
"Because she's the last heir."
"To the Vale trust."
"To more than that."
Matthew frowned.
"What?"
Jonathan looked toward the church windows.
"The original company."
"NexusCore?"
"No."
He shook his head.
"The Sterling network."
Matthew's eyes widened.
"Sterling and Vale were connected?"
"They were never supposed to be."
"Then why?"
"Because your wife was born from both families."
Matthew stared at him.
"What does that mean?"
Jonathan turned.
"It means Clare's inheritance isn't just money."
"What is it?"
"Control."
"Control of what?"
Jonathan's voice dropped.
"Every company Alexander has been using."
Matthew went silent.
Then he realized.
"If Clare takes control..."
"Alexander loses everything."
Matthew stared at him.
"And Edward?"
"Edward loses something too."
"What?"
Jonathan smiled sadly.
"His daughter."
7:32 P.M.
I sat alone in the secure room.
My father's words kept repeating inside my head.
Your biological father is alive.
Twenty-six years.
Twenty-six years of believing I knew where I came from.
Everything was a lie.
Then my phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
A photograph appeared.
Me.
As a newborn.
My mother holding me.
Jonathan standing beside her.
My father—Edward—standing behind them.
And Alexander in the doorway.
Four adults.
One baby.
One secret.
Underneath the photograph was a message:
ASK EDWARD WHAT HAPPENED THREE DAYS AFTER THIS PICTURE WAS TAKEN.
I stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
ASK HIM WHO ORDERED THE BABY TO DISAPPEAR.
My hands went numb.
I walked out of the room.
My father was in the hallway.
"Dad."
He turned.
"What's wrong?"
I held up my phone.
He saw the photograph.
His face went white.
"Who sent this?"
"I don't know."
He looked at the image.
Then whispered:
"Where did they get it?"
"I want the truth."
He said nothing.
"Dad."
His eyes met mine.
"Three days after that photograph..."
He stopped.
"What?"
His voice cracked.
"Jonathan was attacked."
I stared at him.
"By Alexander?"
He shook his head.
"No."
"Then who?"
My father looked toward Daniel.
Daniel lowered his eyes.
My father finally whispered:
"By someone inside this house."
I felt the blood drain from my face.
"Who?"
He didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
"Who?"
Then Daniel's phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed instantly.
He looked at my father.
"Sir."
"What?"
"There's been another breach."
"Where?"
Daniel hesitated.
Then:
"The safe house."
My father's face hardened.
"How many?"
"One."
"Who?"
Daniel looked at me.
"It's Jonathan."
Silence.
My father reached for his weapon.
I grabbed his arm.
"Don't."
He looked at me.
"He has my daughter."
I stared at him.
"No."
My voice shook.
"He's my father."
Before anyone could speak, every light in the building went out.
A voice came through the darkness.
"Clare."
I froze.
It was Jonathan.
But he wasn't outside.
He was already inside.
And then another voice came from the opposite hallway.
Alexander.
"Come with me, niece."
Two men.
Two fathers.
One bloodline.
And suddenly I realized—
May you like
neither of them had come to save me.
They had come to claim me.
