CHAPTER 14 — NO WAY BACK

At 9:04 a.m., Willow's phone began to vibrate.
She stared at the screen.
DEREK VALE.
For several seconds, she didn't move.
The room around her was silent except for the faint hum of the hospital ventilation system.
Richard stood near the window.
Jonathan Reed was at the table with three laptops open.
Margaret Sloan sat beside Willow, watching her carefully.
"Don't answer," Richard said.
Willow looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because everything Derek touches becomes dangerous."
Willow's thumb hovered over the screen.
Then she answered.
"Derek?"
His breathing was uneven.
"Willow."
She immediately noticed something different in his voice.
Not anger.
Not arrogance.
Fear.
Real fear.
"Where are you?"
"I don't have much time."
Richard stepped closer.
Willow put the phone on speaker.
"Then talk."
There was a pause.
"I know who Daniel Mercer is."
Jonathan's fingers stopped moving.
Willow's expression hardened.
"What did you find?"
"Derek..." Chloe's voice could be heard faintly in the background.
Willow frowned.
"Is Chloe with you?"
"Yes."
A second later Chloe spoke.
"Willow, please listen to him."
Richard's jaw tightened.
"Put Derek on speaker properly."
Derek continued.
"Daniel is my father."
Silence.
Willow stared at the phone.
"What?"
"My biological father is Daniel Mercer."
Margaret slowly closed the folder in front of her.
Derek continued.
"And Elena Mercer was my mother."
Willow's face went pale.
"That's impossible."
"I thought so too."
Derek swallowed.
"Until I saw the documents."
He described the birth certificate.
The photographs.
The old correspondence.
The signatures.
Everything.
Willow closed her eyes.
Suddenly the pieces seemed to rearrange themselves.
Daniel had known Derek.
Daniel had access to Derek.
Derek had been brought into Willow's life.
The Room 814 meeting.
The forged documents.
The $750,000 transaction.
The $2.6 million.
The affair.
The Meridian account.
None of it had been random.
"Derek," Willow said quietly, "why did you marry me?"
He didn't answer.
"Derek."
"I was told to get close to you."
Richard's eyes hardened.
Jonathan looked up from his computer.
Willow's voice became almost a whisper.
"Who told you?"
"My father."
The room went completely still.
Derek continued.
"He told me your family had something that belonged to him. He said your father had stolen everything from our family."
"And you believed him?"
"At first."
His voice cracked.
"Then I met you."
Willow didn't speak.
"I actually loved you."
She gave a bitter laugh.
"You loved my money."
"I did."
The honesty surprised even him.
"At some point, I started believing I could have both. You and the money."
Willow looked down.
"And then you discovered who my father was."
"Yes."
"And everything changed."
"Yes."
"Three years ago."
"Yes."
Willow's fingers tightened around the phone.
"You took me to Room 814."
Derek breathed heavily.
"I didn't take you there."
"You were there."
"I was."
"And my mother was there."
"Yes."
Willow froze.
"She was alive."
"Yes."
Richard suddenly stepped forward.
"Where is she?"
Derek hesitated.
"Meridian House."
Richard's face changed.
For the first time since Willow had known him, she saw genuine fear in her father's eyes.
"Where?"
"An old estate outside Albany."
Jonathan immediately began typing.
Derek continued.
"But that's not the worst part."
Willow looked at the phone.
"What?"
"The woman you saw in Room 814 wasn't your mother."
Willow stopped breathing.
"What?"
"She was someone pretending to be her."
Margaret stood.
"Then where was Willow's mother?"
Derek answered.
"She was being held somewhere else."
Richard's voice became cold.
"By whom?"
"Meridian Black."
The name seemed to drain the warmth from the room.
Derek continued.
"Daniel told me Meridian Black wasn't a company. It's a private control network."
Jonathan looked at his screen.
"That explains the shell entities."
Derek continued.
"They control pieces of companies through trusts, nominee shareholders, lawyers, private accounts, and people inside the boardrooms."
"And the forty million?" Willow asked.
"Payment."
"For what?"
"Silence."
Willow looked at Richard.
Her father lowered his eyes.
Derek continued.
"Your mother discovered Meridian Black twenty years ago. She wanted to expose them."
Willow whispered.
"But she disappeared."
"Because she agreed to disappear."
Richard suddenly said, "No."
Everyone looked at him.
Richard's face was pale.
"I never agreed to that."
Derek replied quietly.
"She did."
Richard stepped away from the window.
"You're lying."
"She made a deal."
Derek paused.
"She believed it would protect Willow."
Willow's eyes filled with tears.
"What happened at Meridian House?"
Derek answered.
"That's where your mother discovered the truth."
"Which truth?"
"That Richard wasn't the real owner."
Richard looked toward Willow.
"I didn't know."
Willow studied him.
Derek continued.
"Your father believed he controlled Ashford Meridian."
"He didn't?"
"No."
"Then who did?"
Derek's voice dropped.
"Meridian Black."
Jonathan suddenly turned one laptop around.
"Willow."
On the screen was a new message.
MERIDIAN BLACK — AUTHENTICATION REQUEST
Below it:
PRIMARY BENEFICIARY: WILLOW ELIZABETH ASHFORD
Margaret stared at the screen.
"It's waiting for your authorization."
Willow slowly approached.
"What happens if I authorize it?"
Jonathan answered.
"We find out who controls the network."
Richard immediately said, "No."
Willow turned toward him.
"You told me my whole life was about protecting me."
"It was."
"But you kept secrets."
Richard didn't answer.
"You let me believe my mother was dead."
"I believed she was dead."
"You believed."
His silence said everything.
Willow looked back at the screen.
Then she pressed AUTHORIZE.
The system opened.
Files began appearing.
Thousands of them.
Bank accounts.
Trust agreements.
Private contracts.
Boardroom recordings.
Photographs.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Then one file appeared at the top.
MERIDIAN HOUSE — WILLOW ASHFORD — AGE 15
Willow stared.
"I was there?"
Richard whispered, "Yes."
The file opened.
A video began.
A younger Willow sat at a long dining table.
Beside her was her mother.
Across from them sat Richard.
And behind the glass doors stood Daniel Mercer.
Willow covered her mouth.
She remembered.
Not everything.
But enough.
Her mother's voice came through the recording.
"Richard, if anything happens to me, Willow must never be given control until she is old enough to understand what Meridian really is."
Richard's younger voice answered.
"I'll protect her."
Her mother looked at him.
"You can't protect her from something you don't understand."
The video ended.
Another file opened automatically.
SUCCESSION CONTINGENCY — CREATED BY ELIZABETH ASHFORD
Willow's mother.
A final message appeared.
"If Willow is ever betrayed by the person she trusts most, the succession protocol must activate."
Willow stared at the screen.
The hospital room seemed to disappear.
She suddenly understood.
The succession wasn't activated because she had inherited something.
It was activated because she had been betrayed.
Her mother had anticipated it.
Years ago.
Long before Derek.
Long before the highway.
Long before the twenty-dollar bill.
Willow looked at Richard.
"She knew."
Richard nodded slowly.
"She knew someone would eventually try to use me."
Jonathan suddenly shouted.
"Wait."
Everyone turned.
He pointed to the screen.
"There's a live location."
A red marker appeared.
MERIDIAN HOUSE.
Then another.
SECONDARY LOCATION: HUDSON ESTATE.
And beneath it:
ELIZABETH ASHFORD — ALIVE.
Willow's heart stopped.
Her mother was alive.
Richard stared at the screen.
For twenty years, he had believed he had lost her.
Now the truth was sitting in front of him.
Willow turned to Margaret.
"I want the police."
Margaret nodded.
"And federal investigators."
Richard said nothing.
Willow picked up her coat.
"You aren't going alone."
"I know."
She looked at her father.
"I'm not going anywhere alone again."
Richard's expression softened.
Derek's voice came through the phone.
"Willow."
She stopped.
"What?"
"I know I don't deserve anything from you."
"No."
"I know."
He swallowed.
"But I can help you find her."
Willow looked at the phone.
"Why?"
"Because I finally understand."
A long silence.
"I was the man who threw you out on that highway."
Willow's eyes hardened.
"I know."
"I thought twenty dollars was enough to make you disappear."
He laughed bitterly.
"I didn't know I was throwing away the only person who ever loved me without wanting something."
Willow said nothing.
Derek continued.
"I'll give you everything."
"Documents?"
"Everything."
"Names?"
"Every name."
"Evidence?"
"Every file."
"Daniel?"
"I'll tell you where he is."
Willow closed her eyes.
Then she said:
"Do one thing right, Derek."
"What?"
"Don't lie to me again."
"I won't."
She ended the call.
Outside, sirens began approaching the building.
Jonathan looked at the screen.
"Willow."
"What?"
"The Meridian system just changed."
The words appeared.
CONTROL TRANSFER COMPLETE.
Then:
PRIMARY CONTROLLER — WILLOW ELIZABETH ASHFORD
Another line appeared.
LEGACY CONTROLLER — RICHARD ASHFORD
And beneath it:
LEGACY CONTROLLER STATUS — REVOKED
Richard stared at the screen.
Willow looked at him.
"My mother designed this."
Richard nodded.
"Yes."
Willow took a slow breath.
"Then let's finish what she started."
For the first time in twenty years, the Ashford family was no longer hiding.
And somewhere outside the city, a woman who had been declared dead was waiting for her daughter to come home.
There was no way back now.
Not for Richard.
Not for Willow.
May you like
And certainly not for Derek.
The truth had finally found them.
