CHAPTER 13 THE LAST DEAL

At 7:02 a.m., Derek Vale made the worst decision of his life.

He called Willow.

She answered on the third ring.

"What?"

"I need to see you."

"No."

"Please."

"I don't owe you a meeting."

"I know."

"Then why are you calling?"

"Because they're going to come for you."

Willow sat silently.

Derek continued.

"The people behind everything."

"Who are they?"

"I don't know."

"You're still lying."

"I'm not."

"Then tell me what you know."

Derek swallowed.

"At eight o'clock, something is going to happen."

"What?"

"The trust."

Willow froze.

"How do you know?"

"Because I was told."

"By whom?"

"Daniel."

Her voice became cold.

"Daniel is alive."

"Yes."

"Where is he?"

"I don't know."

"Then you can't help me."

"I know more than you think."

Willow hesitated.

"What?"

"Your mother."

The line went silent.

Derek whispered,

"She's alive."

Willow closed her eyes.

"Where?"

"I don't know."

"Then what do you know?"

"She was involved in the original Meridian transfer."

"I know."

"No."

Derek's voice trembled.

"You don't know the worst part."

Willow waited.

"Your mother didn't disappear because Daniel betrayed her."

"Then why?"

"She disappeared because she betrayed Daniel."

Willow stood.

"What did she do?"

"She took something."

"What?"

"The access key."

"To the forty million?"

"No."

Derek took a breath.

"To something much bigger."

At 7:30 a.m., Richard received a call.

He listened.

Then looked at Willow.

"The Swiss account has been accessed."

"By whom?"

"Unknown."

"Can they transfer the assets?"

"Not without your authorization."

Richard frowned.

"Then why is everyone panicking?"

"Because the authorization request is coming from inside Ashford Meridian."

Willow looked at him.

"Who?"

Jonathan entered.

He was pale.

"Richard."

"What?"

"The authorization is under your name."

Richard stared at him.

"I didn't authorize anything."

"I know."

"Then someone forged it."

Jonathan shook his head.

"No."

He handed him a tablet.

"The biometric authentication is genuine."

Richard's face went white.

"What?"

"Your identity credentials were used."

"Impossible."

"Someone has access to your private authentication system."

Willow understood.

"They don't need to steal your signature."

She looked at her father.

"They've stolen you."

At 7:48 a.m., the boardroom filled.

Directors.

Attorneys.

Security.

Technology specialists.

Everyone waited.

At exactly 7:55, the main screen activated.

A document appeared.

SUCCESSION ACTIVATION PROTOCOL.

Willow stared.

The clock continued.

7:56.

7:57.

7:58.

Richard stood beside her.

"Whatever happens, stay calm."

"I am calm."

"You don't look calm."

"I'm furious."

Richard smiled.

"Good."

At 7:59, the screen changed.

A message appeared.

TRANSFER AUTHORIZATION CONFIRMED.

The room erupted.

The CFO shouted,

"Someone has initiated the transfer."

"Stop it."

"We can't."

"Why?"

"Because the system recognizes the request as legitimate."

Willow stared at the screen.

Then saw a name.

AUTHORIZED BENEFICIARY: WILLOW ELIZABETH ASHFORD.

The room went silent.

Willow looked at Richard.

"What does that mean?"

Richard shook his head.

"I don't know."

Then another line appeared.

CONTROL TRANSFER: ASHFORD MERIDIAN HOLDINGS.

The board members stared.

One director stood.

"This is a hostile takeover."

Willow looked at him.

"By whom?"

He pointed at the screen.

"By you."

Across the city, Derek watched the same transmission.

He laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because he finally understood.

The people behind the conspiracy had engineered everything so Willow would appear responsible.

They wanted the board to believe she had seized the company.

They wanted Richard to believe she had betrayed him.

They wanted the government to see a corporate power struggle.

And while everyone fought each other, someone else would take the forty million.

Derek picked up his phone.

He called Daniel.

The number connected.

A voice answered.

"You understand now."

"Yes."

"Good."

"You used me."

"We all used each other."

"You destroyed my life."

"You destroyed your life."

Derek clenched his jaw.

"What do you want?"

"Finish the transaction."

"No."

Silence.

"What did you say?"

"I said no."

"You don't have a choice."

Derek laughed bitterly.

"That's what everyone keeps telling me."

"You signed the agreement."

"I signed a lie."

"You signed your future."

"No."

Derek looked at the screen.

"I signed away my life."

Daniel's voice became cold.

"Then take it back."

"How?"

"Bring Willow to the old warehouse."

Derek froze.

"Why?"

"Because she has the access key."

"What key?"

"You know."

"I don't."

"Her mother's."

Derek stared.

"What did Elena give Willow?"

Silence.

Then Daniel said,

"You really were never paying attention."

The call ended.

At 8:12 a.m., Willow received an envelope.

No one saw who delivered it.

Inside was a photograph.

Her mother.

Standing beside a little girl.

Willow.

She was approximately eight years old.

Willow stared.

She didn't remember the photograph.

On the back:

YOU WERE THERE.

She turned it over again.

Another line:

ASK YOUR FATHER WHAT HAPPENED AT MERIDIAN HOUSE.

Willow looked at Richard.

"Dad."

He saw the photograph.

His face collapsed.

"Where did you get that?"

"It was delivered."

Richard sat down.

Willow's voice was quiet.

"What happened at Meridian House?"

Richard closed his eyes.

"Your mother took you there."

"Why?"

"Because she was leaving me."

Willow stared.

"What?"

"She had discovered the truth."

"What truth?"

"That the forty million wasn't stolen."

Willow waited.

"It was payment."

"Payment for what?"

Richard looked at her.

"Your life."

Willow's breath caught.

"What does that mean?"

Richard shook his head.

"I don't know."

"You're lying."

"I'm not."

"Dad."

He looked broken.

"I thought I was protecting you."

"From what?"

"From the people who wanted access to the company."

"Why would my life matter?"

Richard whispered,

"Because you were named in the original succession agreement."

Willow's eyes widened.

"I was eight years old."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because your mother created a trust for you."

"What kind?"

"One that would make you the ultimate beneficiary."

Willow stared.

"And the forty million?"

"Was placed into that structure."

"Then it was mine."

"Eventually."

"Why did you hide it?"

"I didn't."

"Then who did?"

Richard didn't answer.

Willow suddenly understood.

Daniel.

Samuel.

Elena.

They hadn't been trying to steal the money.

They had been trying to control who would inherit it.

And Willow had been the center of that struggle since childhood.

At 8:30 a.m., Derek arrived at the old warehouse.

He expected Daniel.

Instead, he found Chloe.

She stood near a table.

Derek stopped.

"You."

She looked exhausted.

"I had to come."

"Where's Daniel?"

"He isn't coming."

"Why?"

"Because he never intended to."

Derek stared.

"What?"

Chloe placed a folder on the table.

"This is everything."

Derek opened it.

Photographs.

Contracts.

Bank records.

Medical records.

And one document.

A birth certificate.

Derek's face changed.

"Whose is this?"

Chloe looked at him.

"Yours."

He stared.

"My birth certificate?"

"Look at the mother's name."

Derek did.

His face went white.

Elena Mercer.

He looked at Chloe.

"No."

"Yes."

"Daniel was my father?"

Chloe nodded.

Derek staggered backward.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The reason Daniel had chosen him.

The reason he had been groomed.

The reason he had been brought into the operation.

The reason Daniel knew his weaknesses.

Derek wasn't merely an accomplice.

He was family.

"You knew?"

"Yes."

"How long?"

"Months."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I was scared."

Derek looked at the birth certificate.

"Why did Daniel hate Richard?"

"Because Richard took the company from him."

"What does that mean?"

"Daniel believed Ashford Meridian belonged to his family."

Derek stared.

"Then why Willow?"

Chloe whispered,

"Because Willow's mother took it away."

At 8:45 a.m., Willow entered Meridian House.

The building had been abandoned for years.

Dust covered the windows.

Old photographs lined the walls.

Richard followed her.

"This is where your mother brought you."

Willow looked around.

"I don't remember."

"That's because you were unconscious."

"What happened?"

"She wanted to leave."

"With me?"

"Yes."

"Why didn't she?"

Richard's voice cracked.

"Because Daniel found her."

Willow turned.

"What happened?"

"They argued."

"About what?"

"The forty million."

"Then what?"

"Your mother gave me the access key."

Willow frowned.

"What key?"

Richard looked at her.

"That's what I've been trying to find."

Willow stared.

"You said she gave it to you."

"I thought she did."

"You thought?"

Richard closed his eyes.

"She gave me something."

"What?"

"A small silver pendant."

Willow's heart stopped.

"The pendant?"

Richard nodded.

"She told me never to let anyone open it."

Willow reached into her coat.

She had found it among her mother's belongings.

She took it out.

A tiny silver pendant.

Richard stared.

"I haven't seen that in twenty years."

Willow opened it.

Inside was a microscopic memory chip.

Jonathan, who had followed them, immediately stepped forward.

"That's the key."

Willow stared.

"What does it contain?"

"We don't know."

"Can we read it?"

"Yes."

Jonathan connected it to a secure device.

The screen activated.

A video appeared.

Willow's mother sat in front of the camera.

Older than in the photographs.

Terrified.

But alive.

Willow stopped breathing.

Her mother looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this, then I failed to protect you."

Willow's eyes filled.

Her mother's voice continued.

"Richard, I need you to listen carefully."

Richard stepped closer.

"The forty million was never stolen."

The screen changed.

Documents appeared.

Accounts.

Names.

Transfers.

Then her mother said:

"It was payment for silence."

Richard whispered,

"Silence about what?"

The video continued.

"Daniel discovered what the company was really doing."

Willow frowned.

"Really doing?"

Her mother's expression changed.

"Ashford Meridian was never just an investment company."

Richard froze.

"What?"

The video showed another document.

A classified agreement.

Multiple government seals.

Private contracts.

International transfers.

Willow stared.

Her mother continued:

"Your father believed he controlled the company."

She paused.

"He never did."

Richard's face went pale.

"Then who did?"

Her mother looked directly at the camera.

"The board was only a front."

Willow leaned closer.

"The real controlling entity is called Meridian Black."

The screen went dark.

Then one final sentence appeared:

AND RICHARD ASHFORD IS NOT THE OWNER.

Willow looked at her father.

"What does that mean?"

Richard didn't answer.

Because he knew.

For twenty years, he had believed Ashford Meridian was his.

But someone else had been controlling it.

Someone powerful enough to manipulate banks.

Government contracts.

Security systems.

Corporate records.

Deaths.

Identities.

And marriages.

Someone who had been waiting for Willow to activate the succession trust.

At 9:03 a.m., the boardroom screens across Ashford Meridian suddenly went black.

Then a message appeared.

MERIDIAN BLACK ACTIVATION COMPLETE.

Every director froze.

A new name appeared.

CONTROLLING BENEFICIARY: WILLOW ELIZABETH ASHFORD.

Willow stared at the screen from Meridian House.

Richard whispered,

"They wanted you."

Willow looked at him.

"Why?"

Before he could answer, every phone in the room rang simultaneously.

One message.

WELCOME HOME, WILLOW.

Then a second.

YOUR HUSBAND WAS ONLY THE FIRST TEST.

Willow's face went cold.

A third message appeared.

NOW WE SEE IF YOU ARE STRONG ENOUGH TO SURVIVE YOUR FAMILY.

And somewhere across the city, Derek looked at the same message.

He understood.

His final role had been chosen.

He wasn't supposed to destroy Willow.

He was supposed to bring her to them.

And if he refused—

they would destroy everyone she loved.

Derek looked at the gun-shaped silhouette of the security guard outside the warehouse.

Then at Chloe.

Then at the folder containing his father's secrets.

For the first time in his life, Derek had a choice that money couldn't solve.

Betray Willow again.

Or finally tell her everything.

May you like

He picked up his phone.

And dialed her number.
