Chapter 3: The Truth Comes Out

Chapter 3: The Truth Comes Out
Monday morning.
Ward Global headquarters buzzed with rumors.
Employees filled the lobby long before sunrise.
Everyone wanted to see the woman whose name had remained hidden for nearly a decade.
The boardroom doors opened.
Twenty-two directors stood as I entered.
Not one remained seated.
"Good morning, Ms. Ward."
I nodded.
"Please sit."
Daniel wasn't there.
His chair had already been removed.
The brass nameplate that once read Chief Executive Officer had disappeared.
As though he had never existed.
Michael began the presentation.
"Our internal audit is complete."
A massive screen illuminated.
Unauthorized bonuses.
Fake consulting contracts.
Corporate funds spent on private vacations.
Millions quietly diverted into shell companies.
Daniel hadn't merely betrayed his marriage.
He had stolen from the company.
One director lowered his glasses.
"He thought no one was watching."
I answered quietly.
"I was always watching."
Another file appeared.
Dozens of emails.
Recorded phone calls.
Signed approvals.
Every lie documented.
Patricia had encouraged most of it.
She believed the company belonged to her son.
She was about to discover otherwise.
By noon...
Federal investigators arrived.
Not because I sought revenge.
Because the evidence demanded accountability.
Daniel was escorted into the building through the side entrance.
No cameras.
No applause.
No power.
He looked exhausted.
When our eyes met, he whispered,
"I'm sorry."
I believed him.
But regret doesn't erase consequences.
"It isn't my forgiveness you need anymore."
Two investigators approached.
"Mr. Carter?"
He nodded weakly.
"We have several questions."
The conference room door closed behind him.
Hours later...
It reopened.
May you like
Daniel walked out carrying nothing.
Not even hope.
