Chapter 2: The Fall

Chapter 2: The Fall

The silence behind me lasted exactly three seconds.

Then chaos erupted.

"Stop her!"

Patricia's voice cracked as she pointed toward the front door.

Daniel lunged after me, but two men in tailored black suits stepped between us before he could reach my arm.

My chief legal officer, Michael Hayes, didn't raise his voice.

"Mr. Carter."

He adjusted his cufflinks.

"I strongly advise you not to touch Ms. Ward."

Daniel stared at him.

"You work for me."

Michael offered a polite smile.

"No."

He handed Daniel a sealed envelope.

"I work for Ward Global Holdings."

Daniel frowned.

"You've always worked for Carter Industries."

Michael's expression never changed.

"Carter Industries has always been a wholly owned subsidiary of Ward Global."

The color drained from Daniel's face.

"No..."

Michael continued as if reading quarterly earnings.

"Your employment agreement clearly states the board may remove the CEO immediately in cases involving fraud, misconduct, or actions that jeopardize the company's interests."

Patricia snatched the envelope from Daniel's hands.

"This is ridiculous!"

She skimmed the first page.

Her hands began shaking.

"The emergency board meeting..."

Michael nodded.

"Already concluded."

Daniel looked at me.

"You planned this."

I met his eyes.

"No."

"I prepared for the day I would finally stop protecting you."

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Michael motioned toward the windows.

"Mr. Carter, you may want to look outside."

Daniel turned.

Several luxury cars were being loaded onto transport trucks.

"The vehicles are being transferred to their registered owner."

He looked at me in disbelief.

"They're yours?"

"They always were."

"The penthouse?"

"My grandfather bought it twenty years before I met you."

"The company?"

"My family's."

He staggered backward as though every answer struck him physically.

Patricia collapsed into a chair.

"What have you done?"

I looked at her calmly.

"I stopped allowing you to pretend my silence was weakness."

Chloe quietly picked up her handbag.

Daniel reached for her.

"Chloe..."

She stepped away.

"You told me you built this empire."

He swallowed hard.

"I did."

She laughed bitterly.

"No."

"You borrowed someone else's."

Without another word, she walked out the front door.

She never looked back.

Daniel watched the elevator doors close.

For the first time in his life...

He was completely alone.

Three hours later...

The financial news exploded.
