CHAPTER 2: THE FIRST DOMINO

The black SUV sliced through the sleeping city.

Inside, silence filled the cabin.

Mariana never looked back.

She stared through the rain-speckled window as the mansion disappeared into the darkness.

Four years.

Four years pretending to be less than she was.

Four years allowing Andrew to believe he had built an empire with his own hands.

He never asked where the emergency funding came from.

Never questioned why every bank suddenly approved impossible loans.

Never wondered why every lawsuit quietly disappeared before reaching court.

He simply accepted success as his birthright.

Across from her sat Victor Hale.

Her father's chief legal counsel.

He slid a thick black folder across the leather seat.

"Every document is ready, Mrs. Escalante."

She opened it.

Hundreds of contracts.

Corporate ownership agreements.

Private trust records.

Stock certificates.

Every page carried one name.

Mariana Escalante.

Victor adjusted his glasses.

"Technically..."

"You've owned eighty-one percent of Sterling Capital for the last five years."

"And Andrew?"

Victor almost smiled.

"He has controlled less than six percent."

Mariana closed the folder.

"So he never actually owned his own company."

"No."

"He was simply allowed to manage it."

The SUV stopped beneath the towering headquarters of Escalante Global Holdings.

Dozens of executives already waited outside despite the hour.

The moment Mariana stepped out—

Every one of them bowed.

"Welcome home, Chairwoman."

Inside the boardroom, her father stood beside the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city.

Alejandro Escalante.

One of the wealthiest businessmen in the world.

His eyes softened the moment he saw his daughter.

"They finally crossed the line."

Mariana nodded.

"He hit me."

The room became deathly quiet.

Several executives exchanged uneasy glances.

Alejandro slowly removed his glasses.

"For four years..."

"I respected your decision."

"You wanted a normal life."

"You wanted someone to love Mariana..."

"...not the Escalante fortune."

He walked toward her.

"They failed."

Mariana took a slow breath.

"No more mercy."

Alejandro looked toward Victor.

"Begin."

Victor nodded.

Within seconds—

Phones began ringing throughout the room.

Banks.

Investment firms.

Government regulators.

Insurance companies.

International partners.

Every call carried the same instruction.

Freeze all Escalante-controlled assets connected to Sterling Capital.

Suspend every credit line.

Recall every outstanding loan.

Cancel every financial guarantee.

The clock struck midnight.

Victor looked up.

"It's done."

May you like

Mariana didn't smile.

"This is only the beginning."
