CHAPTER 9:The Morning Everyone Waited For

By seven o'clock the following morning...

Calloway Group headquarters looked more like a courthouse than a corporate office.

Satellite news trucks lined the streets.

Cameras pointed toward every entrance.

Reporters spoke excitedly into microphones.

"The mysterious controlling shareholder is expected to appear this morning..."

"No identity has been confirmed..."

"Financial markets around the world are watching..."

Inside the building...

No one was working.

No one could.

Every employee whispered the same question.

Who owns Calloway Group?

Nathan arrived before sunrise.

He hadn't slept.

His tie was crooked.

His beard had begun to grow.

For the first time since becoming CEO...

He looked like a man who had run out of answers.

Michael caught up with him near the executive elevators.

"The directors are already here."

Nathan nodded silently.

"And the shareholder?"

"No sign yet."

The elevator doors opened.

Neither man spoke during the ride.

The boardroom was unusually quiet.

Twenty-four directors sat around the polished table.

No phones.

No side conversations.

Everyone waited.

Charles Bennett looked toward Nathan.

"You should prepare yourself."

Nathan forced a smile.

"For what?"

Charles answered honestly.

"For the possibility that everything you've believed for seven years isn't true."

Nathan didn't reply.

Because deep down...

He had already begun to fear exactly that.

Across the city...

I stood before the mirror inside my office.

A navy-blue suit.

Pearl earrings.

Nothing extravagant.

Nothing designed to impress.

Power didn't need decoration.

Julian adjusted the folder in his hands.

"The convoy is ready."

I nodded.

"What time is it?"

"Eight fifteen."

Henry Ashford entered quietly.

He looked at me for a long moment.

"You don't have to do this alone."

"I know."

"I can attend the meeting."

I smiled gently.

"No."

"This has to come from me."

Henry walked closer.

"There is one thing you should remember."

"What?"

"When the truth comes out..."

"They'll apologize."

"They'll beg."

"They'll promise they've changed."

I met his eyes.

"And?"

"Never confuse regret..."

"...with character."

His words settled heavily in my heart.

I knew Nathan would be shocked.

I knew Vivian would deny everything.

I knew Celeste would panic.

None of that mattered anymore.

There was only one thing left to do.

Tell the truth.

At 8:40 a.m...

A convoy of black vehicles left Ashford Capital.

No sirens.

No flashing lights.

Just quiet confidence.

The lead vehicle carried security.

The second carried legal counsel.

The third carried me.

As we drove through downtown...

My phone vibrated.

Julian glanced at the screen.

"Nathan."

I looked at the name for several seconds.

Then answered.

His voice sounded different.

No arrogance.

No anger.

Only exhaustion.

"...Aurora."

"Yes?"

"I need to ask you something."

"I'm listening."

He hesitated.

"Did you know about this?"

I looked out the window.

"About what?"

"The controlling shareholder."

A long silence followed.

Finally...

I answered honestly.

"Yes."

Nathan's breathing stopped.

"You knew?"

"I did."

"Who is it?"

I closed my eyes briefly.

"You'll meet them soon."

"Aurora..."

His voice cracked for the first time.

"Please."

"I need to understand."

"You will."

I ended the call.

Julian looked at me.

"You could have told him."

"He wouldn't have believed me."

Back at headquarters...

Nathan stared at the silent phone in his hand.

Michael walked over.

"What did she say?"

Nathan answered without looking up.

"She knows."

Michael frowned.

"Knows what?"

Nathan slowly raised his head.

"Everything."

At exactly 8:55 a.m...

The boardroom doors opened.

Everyone instinctively stood.

Margaret Ellis entered first.

Behind her came two senior attorneys.

Then three members of Ashford Capital's executive committee.

Charles whispered quietly.

"Where's the shareholder?"

Margaret smiled politely.

"They're on their way."

Nathan watched every face entering the room.

None looked familiar.

His pulse quickened.

Five minutes passed.

9:00 a.m.

Still no one.

Several directors exchanged nervous glances.

Then...

The elevator bell echoed from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Steady.

Unhurried.

Every conversation stopped.

The boardroom doors opened one final time.

The receptionist stepped inside first.

Her voice trembled.

"The controlling shareholder has arrived."

Everyone turned toward the entrance.

Nathan held his breath.

A woman stepped through the doorway.

Simple navy suit.

Hair neatly tied back.

No diamonds.

No designer handbag.

No dramatic entrance.

She carried only a thin black folder.

Nathan's world stopped.

"...Aurora?"

The folder remained tucked calmly beneath my arm as I walked into the room.

No one spoke.

No one moved.

The silence was absolute.

Nathan stared at me as if he were seeing a ghost.

"This..."

He laughed once.

A nervous, confused laugh.

"...this isn't funny."

No one else laughed.

Margaret Ellis stepped forward.

"Mr. Calloway."

She looked toward me before continuing.

"Allow me to make a formal introduction."

She turned completely toward me.

Every executive inside the room followed her movement.

Then...

She bowed her head.

"Good morning..."

"...Chairwoman Ashford."

One after another...

Every executive from Ashford Capital stood.

Then every attorney.

Then every member of the advisory committee.

Each bowed respectfully.

"Good morning, Chairwoman."

Nathan's face drained of color.

Charles Bennett slowly stood.

His eyes widened.

"What..."

He looked from Margaret to me.

"What did she just call you?"

I calmly placed the black folder on the conference table.

Then I looked directly at the man who had once told me to crawl out of his house.

"My name..."

I said quietly.

"...is Aurora Ashford."

"I am the Executive Chair of Ashford Capital."

I paused.

"And the majority owner of Calloway Group."

The room exploded.

Directors stood from their seats.

Several people gasped.

One director accidentally knocked over his chair.

Nathan remained frozen.

His lips moved.

But no words came out.

For the first time in seven years...

The king of Calloway Group discovered...

He had never truly sat on the throne.
