CHAPTER 8:The People Behind the Curtain

Nathan didn't move.

The lobby around him blurred into meaningless noise.

Only one sentence echoed inside his head.

"...the true controlling shareholder."

It couldn't be real.

For seven years, he had signed every major contract.

Approved every acquisition.

Chaired every shareholder meeting.

How could there be another owner?

Michael grabbed his arm.

"Nathan."

"We have to go."

He finally looked up.

"Who are they?"

"They refused to identify themselves."

"They're waiting in the boardroom."

Nathan glanced toward the revolving doors.

Aurora was gone.

Again.

And somehow...

It felt as though every answer had disappeared with her.

Minutes later...

The executive boardroom was packed.

The directors had remained.

The company's outside legal counsel had arrived.

Even the corporate secretary looked nervous.

Three strangers sat quietly at the far end of the polished conference table.

Two men.

One woman.

None of them looked older than fifty.

Their tailored suits carried no visible logos.

No introductions had been made.

No coffee had been touched.

They simply waited.

Nathan entered confidently.

"I'm Nathan Calloway."

"I understand you're here regarding today's financial issues."

The woman stood first.

"Mr. Calloway."

"My name is Margaret Ellis."

"Senior Managing Director."

She placed a business card on the table.

Nathan picked it up.

His eyes narrowed.

There was only one line beneath her name.

Ashford Capital.

The same name.

Again.

Nathan slowly looked up.

"I've been hearing that name all week."

Margaret smiled politely.

"I imagine you have."

Charles Bennett leaned forward.

"Ms. Ellis..."

"Would you mind explaining why every bank in North America suddenly seems to be taking instructions from your firm?"

Margaret didn't answer immediately.

Instead...

She opened a leather portfolio.

Inside were dozens of legal documents.

Original share certificates.

Corporate ownership charts.

Board resolutions.

She gently pushed them toward Nathan.

"Our firm represents the interests of the controlling shareholder."

Nathan skimmed the first page.

Then the second.

Then the third.

The further he read...

The paler he became.

His company.

Its parent company.

Three investment funds.

Five holding corporations.

Everything connected.

Everything traced back to one source.

Ashford Capital.

Nathan looked up sharply.

"This can't be right."

"Our attorneys verified every filing before arriving."

"I've never sold my company."

Margaret remained perfectly calm.

"No."

"You didn't."

"Your father did."

The room froze.

"My father?"

"When Calloway Group faced insolvency seven years ago."

"He signed the emergency restructuring agreement."

Nathan shook his head.

"He told me outside investors provided temporary financing."

"They did."

Margaret folded her hands.

"They also acquired controlling equity."

Nathan stared at her.

"Who?"

"I'm not authorized to answer that."

"Not yet."

Across the city...

I sat inside Henry Ashford's private office.

Neither of us spoke.

The television displayed live coverage from outside Calloway headquarters.

Financial reporters filled the sidewalks.

The story had become national news.

Henry quietly poured two cups of tea.

"You could reveal yourself today."

"I know."

"So why wait?"

I accepted the cup.

"Because if I expose everything now..."

"They'll believe money is the lesson."

Henry smiled.

"And what is the lesson?"

I looked out the window.

"They destroyed a person..."

"...long before they endangered a company."

He nodded slowly.

"Good."

"They need to understand both."

Julian entered carrying another report.

"We've completed the internal audit."

He handed me a tablet.

"There are irregularities."

I looked up.

"What kind?"

"Executive expenses."

"Personal spending."

"Luxury properties."

"Private aircraft."

I scrolled through the numbers.

Millions.

Then tens of millions.

Nothing illegal.

Just excessive.

Nathan had slowly begun treating company money as family money.

Exactly what I had warned him never to do.

Julian looked at me carefully.

"You tried to stop him."

"I did."

"He didn't listen."

"No."

"He listened to someone else."

Neither of us needed to say Celeste's name.

Meanwhile...

Celeste sat inside a luxury spa.

Her phone hadn't stopped ringing.

Friends.

Journalists.

Socialites.

Everyone wanted gossip.

She ignored every call until one message caught her attention.

Have you seen today's news?

A link followed.

She opened it.

The headline made her stomach tighten.

MYSTERIOUS INVESTMENT GIANT TAKES CONTROL OF CALLAWAY GROUP.

She laughed nervously.

"This is ridiculous."

Nathan owned the company.

Everyone knew that.

He always said so.

Still...

Something about the article unsettled her.

She immediately called him.

He answered after several rings.

"Nathan."

"I'm busy."

"Is the article true?"

"I said I'm busy."

"Who is Ashford Capital?"

Silence.

Finally...

Nathan admitted something he never thought he'd say aloud.

"I don't know."

The line went quiet.

For the first time...

Celeste felt afraid.

Back inside the boardroom...

Margaret Ellis closed her portfolio.

"Our visit today has only one purpose."

Nathan forced himself to remain calm.

"Which is?"

"The controlling shareholder wishes to review executive performance."

Nathan frowned.

"I'm the CEO."

"You report to the board."

Margaret nodded.

"And the board ultimately answers to ownership."

Charles Bennett slowly removed his glasses.

"Ms. Ellis..."

"Is ownership dissatisfied?"

Margaret looked directly at Nathan.

"The shareholder believes the company has drifted away from its original values."

Nathan's jaw tightened.

"What values?"

She answered without hesitation.

"Integrity."

"Accountability."

"And respect."

Each word landed like a hammer.

Nathan suddenly remembered Aurora.

She had repeated those same principles countless times over the years.

He used to tease her.

"You're too idealistic."

Now...

Those words echoed through his mind with unbearable clarity.

Margaret continued.

"The shareholder has requested a full executive review."

"Effective immediately."

Nathan looked at the directors.

None of them objected.

Not one.

Charles finally spoke.

"I think..."

"It's time we cooperate."

Nathan couldn't believe what he was hearing.

"You think I'm responsible?"

Charles met his eyes.

"I think..."

"...someone has lost confidence in you."

As the meeting ended...

Margaret gathered her documents.

Before leaving...

She placed a sealed envelope on the conference table.

"For the board."

Charles picked it up.

"What is it?"

"The shareholder's first formal instruction."

She smiled politely.

"It should be opened after six o'clock this evening."

Nathan watched her leave.

His instincts screamed that whatever was inside that envelope...

Would change everything.

At exactly six o'clock...

The board reconvened.

Charles carefully broke the seal.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

Only one sentence had been printed.

Tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m., the controlling shareholder will personally attend the emergency board meeting. Attendance is mandatory.

No signature.

No explanation.

Just one final line beneath it.

Failure to attend will be considered a resignation.

The room fell into stunned silence.

Nathan slowly lowered his head.

Tomorrow.

After seven years...

He would finally meet the person who truly owned the empire he believed was his.

May you like

He had no idea...

The woman was someone he had once ordered to leave through the servants' gate.
