CHAPTER 1 – THE MORNING AN EMPIRE STOPPED BREATHING

Damian Blackwood woke before sunrise to the sound of his phone vibrating across the bedside table.
He frowned.
Who would dare call him at 5:42 a.m.?
He answered without checking the screen.
"What?"
The voice on the other end was trembling.
"Mr. Blackwood... this is Martin from Blackwood Financial."
Damian sat up.
"What happened?"
"Our operating accounts have been frozen."
Silence.
"What?"
"The banks suspended every major credit facility less than fifteen minutes ago."
Damian laughed.
"No."
"There has to be a mistake."
"I've already spoken with three different institutions," Martin whispered. "They all said the same thing."
"They've received instructions from Sinclair Capital."
The smile disappeared from Damian's face.
...
Downstairs, Eleanor was enjoying breakfast when another servant rushed into the dining room.
"Madam..."
"The Swiss bank called."
"They've frozen the family trust."
Her porcelain teacup slipped from her fingers.
It shattered across the marble floor.
"What nonsense!"
"My husband built that trust!"
The servant swallowed.
"They said... most of the assets were only secured through Sinclair Capital."
Eleanor's face turned pale.
"That's impossible."
Vanessa entered wearing a silk robe, still half asleep.
"What happened?"
Before anyone could answer—
Every television in the mansion switched on automatically.
Breaking News.
BLACKWOOD GROUP SHARES PLUNGE AFTER MAJOR INVESTORS WITHDRAW SUPPORT.
The reporter spoke quickly.
"Sources confirm that Sinclair Capital has terminated every financial guarantee supporting Blackwood Group."
"Analysts estimate losses could exceed two billion dollars before today's market closes."
Vanessa frowned.
"Who's Sinclair?"
Damian didn't answer.
Because for the first time...
He remembered.
Four years earlier.
The day he almost lost everything.
A woman wearing a simple white dress had quietly handed him a folder.
Inside had been a signed investment agreement.
No publicity.
No interviews.
No conditions.
Just enough capital to save his company.
He had never asked why.
He had only assumed the investment came from anonymous partners.
Now...
His stomach twisted.
Could Isabella have...
No.
Impossible.
She was nobody.
Wasn't she?
By nine o'clock...
Half the company's directors had resigned.
By ten...
Three international contracts were canceled.
By eleven...
The banks demanded immediate repayment of loans that had once seemed untouchable.
Damian stood inside the executive boardroom surrounded by lawyers.
No one spoke.
Then the doors opened.
Everyone stood.
A silver-haired gentleman entered first.
Behind him...
Walked Isabella.
Not wearing the modest dresses Eleanor mocked.
Not carrying the worn leather handbag they laughed at.
She wore a perfectly tailored ivory suit.
Diamond earrings reflected the morning sunlight.
Every executive in the room immediately lowered their heads.
"Good morning..."
the chairman said.
"I would like to introduce the majority shareholder of Sinclair Capital."
He stepped aside.
"Miss Isabella Sinclair."
The room froze.
One director whispered,
"...She's the Sinclair heiress?"
Damian stared at her.
His lips parted.
"No..."
Isabella met his eyes.
Calm.
Cold.
Unreachable.
May you like
"I warned you yesterday."
"You simply chose not to listen."
