CHAPTER 2 – The Flash Drive They Should Have Destroyed

No one spoke.

The only sound inside the dining room came from the forensic laptop.

The video continued to play.

Julián stood in the middle of the living room, gripping Valeria's wrists so tightly she couldn't pull away.

"You belong to me," he growled.

"If you ever tell your father what's happening in this house, I'll make sure he buries you instead of protecting you."

The recording was crystal clear.

There was no missing context.

No clever explanation.

No joke.

Across the screen, Ofelia calmly folded a blanket over the sofa as though nothing unusual was happening.

Then she looked directly toward the hidden camera.

"Don't leave marks where people can see them," she said.

"Her father notices everything."

The room erupted.

One of Julián's business partners pushed his chair back.

"You told us she was unstable."

Another guest stared at Ofelia in disbelief.

"You watched him do that?"

Ofelia's lips trembled.

"That video is edited."

"It isn't real."

The forensic examiner didn't even look up from the computer.

"It contains the original metadata."

"No evidence of alteration."

The color drained from Ofelia's face.

Julián suddenly lunged toward the laptop.

"Turn it off!"

Two investigators intercepted him before he reached the table.

He struggled violently.

"This is private property!"

"No," one investigator replied.

"It is now evidence."

The second video opened.

This one had been recorded inside Julián's home office.

Valeria watched in stunned silence.

She had never known a camera existed there.

Julián sat behind his desk while Ofelia spread several documents across it.

The property deed.

Loan agreements.

Bank statements.

Ofelia slid a pen toward him.

"She'll never read the paperwork."

"She's too busy apologizing."

Julián laughed.

"Good."

"Once the mortgage defaults, her father's vacation house becomes collateral."

"And when Ernesto tries to save her..."

"We take that property too."

Valeria felt the blood leave her face.

The vacation house.

Her mother had chosen that land before cancer took her life.

It was the only place Ernesto had refused to sell.

The entire marriage...

The gifts.

The expensive dinners.

The fake apologies.

Every act of affection.

It had all been leading to one thing.

Her father's property.

Ernesto remained perfectly still.

Only those who knew him well noticed the muscle tightening along his jaw.

He looked at Julián.

"You never loved my daughter."

Julián said nothing.

"You married her because you couldn't buy what belonged to our family."

Still silence.

That silence became its own confession.

One investigator carefully sealed the flash drive inside an evidence bag.

Before he could place it into the case...

A woman stepped forward.

"I need to tell you something."

Everyone turned.

It was Rosa.

The family's housekeeper.

She had worked for them for nearly six years.

She kept her eyes on the floor.

"I copied those videos."

Julián stared at her.

"You..."

His voice cracked.

"You did this?"

Rosa nodded.

"I was supposed to clean the office every Thursday."

"I found the hidden camera."

"At first, I thought it was for security."

Tears filled her eyes.

"Then I watched what it recorded."

Valeria covered her mouth.

Rosa reached into her apron pocket.

She removed a small memory card.

"I was afraid no one would ever believe Mrs. Herrera."

"So every week..."

"I secretly made another copy."

The investigator accepted the card with gloved hands.

"How many recordings are on this?"

Rosa swallowed.

"Eighty-three."

The room froze.

Eighty-three separate recordings.

Nearly two years of evidence.

Threats.

Assaults.

Financial fraud.

Witness intimidation.

And conversations Julián never imagined another soul would hear.

Julián's confidence collapsed.

He looked desperately toward the front door.

Toward the windows.

Toward any possible escape.

Then his phone vibrated.

One message.

His expression changed instantly.

Complete panic.

The investigator noticed.

"Who sent that?"

"No one."

"Show me."

"It's personal."

The investigator gently took the phone from his hand.

His eyes narrowed as he read the screen.

He looked up at Ernesto.

"They're emptying the offshore accounts."

Julián lunged again.

"Give me my phone!"

Too late.

Another investigator was already speaking into his radio.

"Freeze every financial transfer connected to Herrera Holdings."

Within seconds, replies crackled through the speaker.

Then came the words that changed everything.

"Accounts already frozen."

Julián's knees nearly gave out.

His money was gone.

His leverage was gone.

His escape plan was gone.

But Ernesto wasn't looking at him anymore.

He was staring at the memory card resting inside the evidence bag.

Because Rosa had just mentioned something no one else seemed to notice.

She had copied the recordings every Thursday.

For almost two years.

Which meant...

Somewhere among those eighty-three videos...

There might be footage of something far worse than domestic abuse.

Something Julián had killed to keep hidden.

May you like

And Ernesto suddenly realized...

His daughter's nightmare had only uncovered the surface.
