CHAPTER 1 – The Birthday Trap

The first police officer didn't announce himself.
He simply walked into the dining room and quietly closed the front door behind him.
The click of the lock echoed louder than the music ever had.
Every conversation stopped.
Even the candles seemed to burn more slowly.
Julián looked from the officer to Ernesto Salgado, then laughed as though the entire scene were nothing more than an elaborate birthday prank.
"Seriously?" he said, raising his glass. "You invited the police to your daughter's birthday?"
Ernesto didn't answer.
He reached into the inside pocket of his jacket and removed a thin brown folder.
It wasn't thick.
It didn't need to be.
He placed it on the dining table beside the birthday cake.
"I came to celebrate my daughter's survival," he said calmly.
"Everything else is business."
The room fell silent again.
Valeria stood frozen on the terrace, unable to breathe.
For months she had imagined someone saving her.
She never imagined that person would be her father.
One of the investigators stepped toward Julián.
"Mr. Julián Herrera?"
"Yeah?"
"We'd like you to remain here while we conduct an investigation."
Julián laughed again.
"You don't have a warrant."
"No."
The investigator smiled politely.
"We have your confession."
The smile disappeared from Julián's face.
"You admitted, in front of multiple witnesses, that you struck your wife."
He glanced around the room.
Suddenly none of his friends would meet his eyes.
A minute earlier they had been laughing.
Now they stared at the floor.
No one wanted to become part of what was happening.
Ofelia forced herself to stand.
"This is ridiculous," she snapped.
"My son was joking."
Ernesto finally looked at her.
"Excellent."
He nodded toward one of the investigators.
"Please ask every guest whether they believed it was a joke before my arrival."
The investigator pulled out a notebook.
One by one...
Guests began answering.
"No."
"I've seen bruises before."
"They argued constantly."
"I heard him threaten her last month."
Every sentence chipped away at Julián's confidence.
Then the forensic examiner approached Valeria.
"Mrs. Herrera, may I examine the injuries on your face?"
Valeria hesitated.
She looked toward her husband.
The same man who had spent the last year convincing her that no one would ever believe her.
Ernesto quietly stepped beside her.
"You don't need permission anymore."
Her hands trembled.
Slowly...
She wiped away the makeup covering her cheek.
The room gasped.
Finger-shaped bruises stretched from her jaw to her temple.
One older bruise, yellowing around the edges, had almost healed.
Another was fresh.
Barely twenty-four hours old.
The forensic examiner photographed every mark.
Without saying a word.
Across the room, Ofelia suddenly rushed toward the pantry.
"No!"
Everyone turned.
She dropped to her knees beside the black trash bag and desperately shoved her hands inside.
Bank papers.
Shredded envelopes.
A flash drive.
She grabbed the drive first.
Before she could crush it beneath her heel—
An investigator caught her wrist.
"What are you hiding?"
"Nothing!"
She struggled violently.
"It's family paperwork!"
The investigator carefully took the flash drive and handed it to Ernesto.
He didn't even look at it.
He handed it directly to the evidence technician.
"Seal it."
Ofelia's face turned white.
Valeria stared at the tiny silver drive.
She had seen it before.
Julián kept it locked inside his office drawer.
He once told her...
"If anyone ever sees what's on this drive, everything we've built disappears."
She never knew what he meant.
Until now.
The evidence technician connected the drive to a forensic laptop.
A loading bar crossed the screen.
Then folders appeared.
BANK RECORDS.
PROPERTY TRANSFERS.
PRIVATE VIDEOS.
Everyone leaned closer.
The first video opened automatically.
The timestamp was six months old.
The dining room.
This same house.
This same family.
The screen showed Julián grabbing Valeria by the throat while Ofelia stood nearby...
Watching.
Smiling.
Not a single person in the room spoke.
Julián's breathing became uneven.
Because he finally understood...
May you like
This birthday wasn't the beginning of his nightmare.
It was the day every secret he had buried came back to testify against him.
