CHAPTER 2 — The Boardroom Reckoning

The silence inside the mansion lasted only a few seconds.

Outside, engines idled.

Inside, an empire changed hands.

Daniel stumbled toward the front door.

"Elena!"

She didn't stop.

Her Chief Legal Officer, Graham Pierce, held the car door open.

"The board assembled thirty minutes ago, ma'am."

Elena nodded once.

"They've waited long enough."

The convoy disappeared through the gates.

Leaving behind a mansion filled with people who had just realized they had never known the woman they had spent years humiliating.

Daniel drove like a man chasing his own life.

By the time he reached Ward Global Headquarters, the executive parking entrance was already blocked.

Security guards he had greeted every morning for years stepped in front of his car.

"Good morning, Mr. Brooks."

Daniel frowned.

"I'm late."

The guard remained polite.

"I'm sorry."

"You no longer have authorization to enter through Executive Access."

Daniel laughed nervously.

"There must be some mistake."

The guard handed him a printed notice.

CEO credentials revoked.

Effective immediately.

Signed.

Elena Ward.

His hands began to shake.

The elevator refused his access card.

So did the executive floor.

Employees who normally greeted him with eager smiles suddenly avoided eye contact.

Some whispered.

Others stared openly.

Rumors traveled faster than elevators.

By the time Daniel reached the boardroom using the guest elevator, everyone already knew.

Inside sat twelve directors.

Elena occupied the seat at the head of the table.

Not because she had taken Daniel's place.

Because it had always been hers.

The chairman cleared his throat.

"This emergency meeting will now begin."

Daniel marched inside.

"This is ridiculous."

"I'm still CEO."

"No," the chairman replied calmly.

"You were CEO."

A stack of documents slid across the polished walnut table.

"Your termination package."

Daniel stared.

"I built this company."

Elena finally spoke.

"You managed it."

"My family built it."

The room fell silent.

One director opened another folder.

"Following confirmation from the Ward Family Trust..."

"...Mrs. Elena Ward holds fifty-eight percent of voting shares."

Another director added,

"Every major strategic decision over the past four years required her approval."

Daniel looked around desperately.

No one defended him.

Because everyone already knew the truth.

Only he had been left in the dark.

"I loved you."

The words escaped before he could stop them.

Elena looked at him for a long moment.

"I know."

"That's what makes this so tragic."

"You loved me..."

"...until someone richer appeared."

Daniel lowered his head.

"I made a mistake."

"No."

She stood.

"You made a decision."

"Repeatedly."

She placed one final envelope in front of him.

"Your resignation."

"You can sign it..."

"...or the board will vote."

Five seconds later...

Twelve hands rose.

Unanimously.

Daniel Brooks was removed as CEO.

Without a single vote in his favor.

The meeting ended.

His career ended with it.

Outside the glass tower, reporters were already gathering.

Someone had leaked the story.

May you like

For the first time in his life...

Daniel walked out of the building carrying a cardboard box.
