CHAPTER 3: THE MAN WHO TRIED TO RUN

The moment my mother finished speaking, Daniel bolted.
Literally.
He turned and ran.
Straight down the side aisle.
Several guests shouted in surprise.
One of the groomsmen tried to stop him.
Daniel shoved him aside.
For a second chaos consumed the cathedral.
But Rebecca was already smiling.
"Too late."
Daniel froze.
Three police detectives stepped through a side entrance.
They had been waiting outside the entire time.
His face lost what little color remained.
One detective approached calmly.
"Daniel Carter, we'd like to ask you some questions regarding financial fraud, obstruction of investigation, and falsified estate documents."
Olivia looked like she might faint.
The church erupted.
Phones appeared everywhere.
Board members began whispering furiously.
Investors exchanged nervous glances.
Because if Daniel fell...
They knew others might fall with him.
The detective reached for Daniel's arm.
Then something unexpected happened.
Daniel laughed.
A strange, broken laugh.
Everyone stared.
He looked directly at me.
"You think this ends with me?"
The smile on his face sent a chill through my body.
Rebecca's expression changed instantly.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel looked around the church.
At the board members.
At the investors.
At my mother.
Then back at me.
"Emily, you still don't know who ordered the accident."
The cathedral went silent.
Every sound disappeared.
My heart stopped.
"What did you say?"
His smile widened.
"The storm wasn't the problem."
I felt the world tilt beneath my feet.
The detective tightened his grip on Daniel's arm.
But the damage was already done.
Because suddenly the biggest question wasn't who stole my company.
The biggest question was whether someone had tried to kill me.
May you like
And if they had...
Who was still free?
