CHAPTER 2: THE WOMAN IN THE FRONT ROW

The cathedral felt smaller as every eye followed my gaze.

Not toward Daniel.

Toward the front pew.

Toward my mother.

Margaret Carter.

The woman who had raised me.

The woman who had held my hand through every childhood nightmare.

The woman now staring at me as though she had seen judgment itself walk through the church doors.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then my mother slowly stood.

"Emily..." she whispered.

The sound of her voice nearly broke me.

Because part of me still wanted to run into her arms.

Part of me still wanted to believe there had been some terrible mistake.

But the documents in my hand told a different story.

I lifted the photograph from the envelope.

A grainy image taken by a security camera.

The date was stamped clearly in the corner.

Twelve days after my accident.

The photograph showed Daniel sitting across from my mother inside a private bank office.

Between them sat a folder labeled ESTATE TRANSFER AUTHORIZATION.

Gasps erupted throughout the cathedral.

My mother's face crumpled.

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Tell them," I said.

Neither answered.

So I held up the transfer receipt.

The amount made several guests audibly gasp.

Thirty-two million dollars.

Transferred from a trust account created by my late father.

An account only three people knew existed.

Me.

My mother.

And Daniel.

Olivia took another step backward.

"Oh my God."

The words barely escaped her lips.

Then I unfolded the final document.

A printed email.

Sent from my mother's private account.

Addressed to Daniel.

The subject line contained only five words.

If Emily Is Found Alive.

The cathedral exploded into whispers.

My mother's knees nearly gave out.

Tears filled her eyes.

"I can explain."

"No," I said quietly.

"You can finally tell the truth."

The woman who had spent her life teaching me integrity lowered her head in shame.

And that was when she confessed.

Three years earlier, my father had secretly rewritten his will.

Instead of leaving control of Carter Global to my mother, he left everything to me.

The company.

The trusts.

The voting power.

Everything.

My mother discovered the change after his death.

And she never forgave him.

Then the yacht accident happened.

And Daniel came to her with an opportunity.

A temporary arrangement.

Just until the estate settled.

Just until everyone accepted that Emily Carter was gone.

But temporary became permanent.

And greed became a conspiracy.

When she finished speaking, half the church looked horrified.

The other half looked sick.

Because they all understood the same thing.

May you like

This wasn't a misunderstanding.

This was betrayal.
