Chapter 5: One Year Later

The mansion no longer belonged to Nathan.

It had become a rehabilitation center for survivors of domestic violence.

The ballroom where I had bled onto black marble was now filled with sunlight, children's laughter, and women rebuilding lives that others had tried to destroy.

I insisted on preserving one section of the original floor.

Not as a reminder of pain.

But as proof that survival leaves stronger foundations than fear.

Nathan Ashford was sentenced to decades in federal prison after pleading guilty to financial fraud, conspiracy, money laundering, tax evasion, obstruction of justice, and multiple violent offenses.

Many of his former executives testified against him.

Celeste accepted a plea agreement and disappeared from public life.

The tabloids stopped writing about both of them within months.

Empires built on lies always collapse faster than they're built.

On the anniversary of that night, Dad and I stood outside the center's entrance.

He looked at the women walking through the doors.

"You could have taken revenge."

I smiled.

"I did."

He raised an eyebrow.

I watched a young mother laugh with her daughter in the garden.

"No."

"I chose something better."

"I made sure no one else would have to survive what I did."

Dad smiled for the first time in a long while.

"I'm proud of you."

I slipped the sapphire pendant into a small wooden box.

It had recorded the worst night of my life.

It had also recorded the moment my life truly began.

Nathan once believed two hundred lashes would erase me.

Instead...

They exposed him.

He tried to break my body.

He destroyed his own empire.

And in the end, the woman he thought stood alone had never been alone at all.

She had simply been waiting for the right moment...

To make one phone call.
