Chapter 2: Five Minutes to Ruin

The sound reached them before anyone spoke.

A deep, rhythmic thunder rolled across the night.

Thump... Thump... Thump...

The crystal chandelier above the grand hall trembled ever so slightly.

Nathan frowned.

"What the hell is that?"

Celeste stood from the white leather chair, her champagne forgotten.

"It sounds like..."

She never finished.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, powerful searchlights swept across the grounds of Blackthorn Manor.

One helicopter.

Then another.

Then a third.

The beams cut through the darkness like giant blades.

Nathan forced a laugh.

"So your father rented helicopters to scare me?"

His confidence sounded thinner now.

"You've become dramatic, Evelyn."

I said nothing.

I simply watched the front gates.

The steel gates that Nathan had personally installed after becoming one of the youngest CEOs in the logistics industry.

Eight-inch reinforced titanium.

Bulletproof.

Controlled from a private security room.

He often bragged that no one entered Blackthorn Manor without his permission.

He was wrong.

A loud metallic explosion echoed across the estate.

The gates swung open.

Not because they were destroyed.

Because someone had overridden every security system in less than three seconds.

Nathan's smile disappeared.

"Impossible."

His phone vibrated.

Then vibrated again.

And again.

Within seconds, it wouldn't stop ringing.

His chief of security.

The CFO.

His executive assistant.

The board chairman.

Every call arrived one after another.

Nathan answered the first one.

"What?"

His expression changed immediately.

"No... That's impossible."

He looked toward the window.

"What do you mean federal agents are at headquarters?"

Another pause.

"The Financial Crimes Task Force?"

His face turned pale.

"They don't have a warrant."

He listened.

Then his knees almost buckled.

"They... already have one?"

The call ended.

Another immediately replaced it.

"Nathan!"

It was the company's legal director.

"They've frozen every corporate account!"

Nathan shouted into the phone.

"Who authorized it?"

"I don't know!"

"They came with sealed federal orders."

"They're taking servers."

"They're copying financial records."

"They've locked down the executive floor."

Nathan's breathing became uneven.

"This is political."

"It has to be."

He hung up before another call arrived.

Then another.

Then another.

Each conversation lasted less than thirty seconds.

Each one made him look older.

His empire wasn't under attack.

It was collapsing.

Celeste finally looked at me.

"What did you do?"

I slowly stood.

Every movement sent fire across my back.

Blood soaked through the torn silk of my dress.

Yet somehow...

I had never stood taller.

"I told my father the truth."

Nathan laughed again.

This time...

No one believed it.

"Your father?"

"The retired accountant?"

"You expect me to believe he can mobilize federal agencies?"

I looked into his eyes.

"My father never retired."

Nathan's face stiffened.

"What?"

"He simply stopped letting the world know who he was."

The front doors exploded open.

Not with force.

With precision.

A team of twelve men entered in perfect formation.

Black suits.

Earpieces.

No visible weapons.

Yet every step radiated absolute authority.

The servants Nathan had dismissed earlier stared from outside the hall, too terrified to move.

The team split instantly.

Half secured every entrance.

The others walked directly toward me.

Not Nathan.

Not Celeste.

Me.

The man leading them stopped exactly three feet away.

He bowed.

Not a polite nod.

A genuine bow.

"Miss Blackwood."

His voice was calm.

"We apologize."

"We were four minutes and thirty-eight seconds late."

Nathan blinked.

"What did he just call you?"

The man ignored him.

Instead, he removed his suit jacket and gently placed it over my shoulders to cover the wounds on my back.

"I'm sorry they touched you."

I smiled for the first time that night.

"It wasn't your fault, Daniel."

Daniel Mercer.

Former Navy SEAL.

Now Director of Executive Protection for Blackwood Holdings.

Nathan stared.

Recognition slowly appeared.

"I know you..."

Daniel never looked at him.

"You've requested meetings with our office seven times over the past three years."

Nathan swallowed.

"You work for Blackwood Holdings."

"I do."

Nathan forced another smile.

"Good."

"Then there's been a misunderstanding."

"I'm one of Blackwood Holdings' largest logistics partners."

Daniel finally met his eyes.

"No."

"You were."

Silence.

Nathan laughed nervously.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel reached into a leather portfolio and handed Nathan a single sheet of paper.

Nathan scanned it.

His hands began to shake.

"No..."

His voice cracked.

"No..."

Celeste grabbed the document.

Her face drained of color.

It was one sentence.

Effective immediately, all contracts between Blackwood Holdings and Ashford Global Logistics are permanently terminated.

Signed—

William Blackwood

Chairman.

Nathan looked at me.

"No..."

"That isn't possible."

"You don't know William Blackwood."

I finally spoke.

"He's my father."

Everything stopped.

Even the helicopters seemed quieter.

Nathan looked as though his brain refused to process the words.

"No..."

"You lied."

"For four years..."

"You lied to me."

"I never lied."

"You never asked."

His breathing became ragged.

"You mean..."

"Blackwood Holdings..."

"The shipping ports..."

"The investment banks..."

"The satellite companies..."

"The defense contracts..."

I nodded once.

"All of them."

Nathan stumbled backward.

His lips parted.

He suddenly remembered every business deal that had made him rich.

Every loan approved without explanation.

Every government contract that mysteriously landed in his lap.

Every investor who had chosen him over companies twice his size.

None of it had happened because he was a genius.

It happened because William Blackwood quietly opened every door.

For me.

Nathan whispered,

"Oh my God..."

Celeste grabbed his arm.

"Nathan."

"Say something."

He slowly turned toward me.

"You..."

"You made me."

"What?"

"I built everything!"

I almost laughed.

"No."

"You borrowed everything."

Daniel stepped aside as another figure entered.

An older man.

Silver hair.

Tailored charcoal overcoat.

No security announced him.

They didn't need to.

Every person in the room instinctively moved aside.

My father.

William Blackwood.

He walked directly to me.

His eyes never left my injuries.

For a long moment...

He said nothing.

His hands trembled slightly as he touched the blood on my shoulder.

"I warned you."

His voice was soft.

"I know."

"I thought I could save him."

He closed his eyes.

"You stayed too long."

"I'm sorry."

He gently rested his forehead against mine like he had when I was a little girl frightened by thunderstorms.

"You never apologize for loving someone."

Then he looked at Nathan.

Everything warm disappeared from his face.

Only ice remained.

"So."

"You're the man who thought my daughter was alone."

Nathan opened his mouth.

No words came out.

William turned to Daniel.

"Has every recording been secured?"

"Yes, sir."

"The financial evidence?"

"Already delivered to federal investigators."

"The witnesses?"

"In protective custody."

William nodded.

"Good."

Then he looked back at Nathan.

"You spent four years believing you were the hunter."

He paused.

"You never realized..."

"You were the evidence."

Outside...

The flashing red and blue lights of federal vehicles filled the entire estate.

And somewhere beyond the front gates...

Someone announced through a loudspeaker:

May you like

"Federal agents."

"Nobody leaves this property."
