CHAPTER 12 â My Mother's Death Was a Lie

The room fell into absolute silence.
No one dared speak.
Not Detective Bennett.
Not the forensic investigators.
Not even Nathan.
Every pair of eyes settled on my father.
Edward Sterling stood perfectly still, staring at the message on the tablet as though the words belonged to another lifetime.
Victoria Sterling must never discover what happened to her mother.
I took one slow step toward him.
"Dad..."
My voice cracked for the first time that night.
"Tell me."
He didn't answer.
Instead, he closed his eyes.
When he opened them again...
they looked older.
Much older.
As though twenty-two years had returned in a single moment.
"I promised your mother..."
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"...that I would never tell you."
My heart tightened.
"So the accident..."
He slowly shook his head.
"It wasn't the whole truth."
A painful silence filled the hall.
I remembered every birthday.
Every school recital.
Every family photograph.
My mother was always described the same way.
She died in a tragic car accident when you were six.
That was the story.
The only story.
The one I had believed for twenty-two years.
Until tonight.
My father walked toward one of the windows overlooking the estate.
Rain had begun to fall.
He watched it in silence before speaking.
"The accident happened."
He paused.
"But your mother didn't die that day."
The words stole the air from my lungs.
"What?"
I could barely breathe.
"You told me..."
"I know."
"You told me she died at the hospital."
"I lied."
Nathan slowly looked up.
Even he seemed stunned.
My father continued.
"Your mother survived the crash."
"She was badly injured."
"But alive."
I stared at him in disbelief.
"If she survived..."
"Then where is she?"
He lowered his head.
"I don't know."
The room erupted.
Detective Bennett stepped forward.
"Mr. Sterling..."
"Are you saying your wife disappeared?"
He nodded once.
"Forty-eight hours after the accident."
"From a private medical facility."
"No forced entry."
"No witnesses."
"No ransom demand."
The detective frowned.
"You never reported this?"
"I reported everything."
He looked at her.
"The investigation found nothing."
"No suspects."
"No evidence."
"No body."
Legally...
my mother was declared dead.
Emotionally...
my father had never believed it.
The operations officer hurried over with another encrypted file.
"Sir."
"The Zurich team has unlocked the second page."
My father accepted the tablet.
This time...
he didn't read it alone.
He handed it directly to me.
Across the screen appeared a scanned document.
PROJECT AURORA
Date:
Twenty-two years earlier.
Classification:
Strictly Confidential.
My eyes scanned the first paragraph.
Then stopped.
I read it again.
Then a third time.
Because I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
Target: Eleanor Sterling
Objective: Obtain access to Sterling Holdings through family leverage.
Operation Status: In Progress.
I looked at my father.
"Mom had a file..."
"...before the accident?"
He nodded slowly.
"Victor Hale was already watching our family."
Detective Bennett looked toward the investigators.
"Find every reference to Project Aurora."
The forensic analysts immediately began searching the recovered database.
Within seconds...
dozens of files appeared.
Photographs.
Travel records.
Bank transactions.
Surveillance reports.
One investigator suddenly froze.
"Detective..."
"What?"
"I found surveillance photographs."
"Of who?"
He enlarged the image.
The room went silent.
It showed my mother.
Standing outside my elementary school.
Three weeks...
after the date she was supposedly buried.
My knees almost gave out.
"No..."
The investigator zoomed in further.
The timestamp was authentic.
There was no mistake.
No manipulation.
The photograph had been taken nineteen days after the funeral.
I couldn't stop staring.
My mother looked frightened.
She wore a baseball cap.
Dark sunglasses.
She was holding a little girl's backpack.
Mine.
She had been there.
Watching me.
Without letting me see her.
Tears blurred my vision.
"She came..."
My voice broke.
"She came to see me."
My father turned away.
He couldn't look at the photograph.
"I never knew."
Nathan whispered,
"Victor..."
"He took her."
No one answered.
Because every piece of evidence was beginning to point in the same direction.
Project Aurora.
The surveillance.
The disappearance.
The hidden files.
Victor Hale hadn't stumbled into the Sterling family.
He had been targeting us for decades.
Just then...
another analyst called out.
"I've found audio files."
Detective Bennett nodded.
"Play them."
The speakers crackled.
Static filled the room.
Then...
a woman's voice.
Weak.
Trembling.
But unmistakable.
My entire body froze.
I knew that voice.
Even after twenty-two years.
It was my mother.
"Edward..."
A long pause.
"If you're hearing this..."
She sounded exhausted.
"Don't look for me."
Tears streamed down my face.
She continued.
"They'll kill Victoria if you do."
The recording ended abruptly.
The room was silent except for my breathing.
My father closed his eyes.
He had searched for twenty-two years.
Only to discover...
his wife had disappeared trying to protect our daughter.
Before anyone could recover...
the communications officer rushed into the hall carrying another satellite report.
"Sir!"
My father turned immediately.
"What happened?"
"We've traced the origin of the recording."
"Where?"
The officer swallowed.
"It wasn't stored in Zurich."
"It came from a secure archive uploaded..."
He looked directly at my father.
"...thirty-six hours ago."
Everyone froze.
Detective Bennett frowned.
"Thirty-six hours?"
"That's impossible."
The officer nodded.
"It means..."
He hesitated.
"The recording wasn't sitting in an old archive for twenty-two years."
He looked at me.
"It was uploaded..."
"...by someone who had access to it two days ago."
The implication hit everyone at once.
Someone...
somewhere...
had been alive.
Had preserved my mother's message.
And had deliberately released it now.
My father slowly clenched his fists.
After twenty-two years of believing he was chasing a ghost...
for the first time...
he allowed himself to say the words he had buried deep inside his heart.
"My wife..."
May you like
He looked at the screen with tears in his eyes.
"...might still be alive."
