CHAPTER 1 — The Helicopters at Blackthorn Manor

The thunder wasn't coming from the storm.

It was coming from the sky.

Nathan Ashford frowned as the sound of helicopter blades grew louder, vibrating through the towering windows of Blackthorn Manor.

One helicopter.

Then another.

Then a third.

The crystal chandelier overhead trembled almost imperceptibly.

Celeste Monroe slowly rose from the white leather armchair, the champagne glass slipping from her fingers and shattering across the marble floor.

"What... is that?"

No one answered.

I never looked away from Nathan.

A few seconds earlier, he had stood over me with the confidence of a man who believed he owned every person in the room.

Now...

for the first time in four years...

I watched uncertainty replace arrogance.

He forced a laugh.

"Relax."

"It has nothing to do with us."

Outside, powerful searchlights swept across the front lawn.

The sound grew louder.

Closer.

Then came the unmistakable screech of tires.

Several black armored SUVs raced through the front gates, stopping in perfect formation beneath the grand staircase.

Nathan's smile disappeared.

"Who gave them permission to enter?"

His question echoed through the hall.

No one answered.

Because no one inside the manor had opened the gates.

They had opened themselves.

Nathan hurried toward the security monitor mounted beside the fireplace.

The screen was black.

He pressed several buttons.

Nothing.

"What the hell?"

He hit the monitor with the palm of his hand.

Still nothing.

I spoke quietly.

"You disconnected your own security system."

His head snapped toward me.

For a heartbeat...

neither of us moved.

Then his phone rang.

The screen displayed one word.

HEAD OF SECURITY

Nathan answered immediately.

"Where are you?"

The frightened voice on the other end barely sounded human.

"Sir..."

"We've lost the perimeter."

"What do you mean you've lost it?"

"They overrode the entire system."

Nathan's face tightened.

"Who?"

"I... I don't know."

The man hesitated.

"They're carrying federal credentials."

"And..."

His voice dropped even lower.

"They said they're not here for Ashford Global."

"They're here for Blackthorn Manor."

The line went dead.

Nathan stared at his phone.

Slowly...

he looked back at me.

"What did you do?"

I smiled for the first time that night.

"I made a phone call."

Celeste stepped backward.

"No..."

"This has to be some kind of mistake."

Nathan shook his head.

"She's bluffing."

He pointed toward me.

"She's been isolated for years."

"She doesn't know anyone."

"She has no influence."

His words almost made me laugh.

For four years...

that was exactly what I wanted him to believe.

A deafening roar shook the windows.

The helicopters settled onto the estate's private landing field.

Powerful floodlights illuminated the front gardens like daylight.

Then...

the manor's massive oak doors opened.

Not kicked in.

Not forced.

They simply opened.

As though the people entering already had every legal right to be there.

Eight men in black tactical suits walked inside with disciplined precision.

Their uniforms bore no company logo.

No military insignia.

Only a silver crest embroidered above the left pocket.

A phoenix rising from a crown.

Nathan frowned.

"I've never seen that emblem before."

I had.

I'd seen it since I was five years old.

It belonged to my father's private executive security division.

The finest protection team money could buy.

The team that protected presidents.

Royal families.

Fortune 100 founders.

And one little girl who happened to be their commander's daughter.

The lead officer removed a black leather glove.

His sharp eyes swept across the hall.

They landed on me.

Everything changed.

Without hesitation...

all eight officers stood perfectly straight.

Then, in complete silence...

they bowed.

Deeply.

"Miss Victoria."

The words echoed through the mansion.

Nathan blinked.

Celeste's mouth slowly fell open.

The room became so quiet that shattered glass could be heard settling across the marble floor.

Nathan looked from the officers...

to me...

then back again.

His voice barely came out.

"Miss... Victoria?"

The commander stepped forward.

His expression darkened the instant he saw the marks on my wrists.

Then he noticed the riding whip lying beside Nathan's feet.

His jaw tightened.

"Who did this to you?"

Nathan immediately stepped forward.

"Listen, Officer, this is a private family matter."

The commander didn't even acknowledge him.

He continued looking only at me.

"Miss Victoria..."

"Give the order."

Nathan laughed nervously.

"What order?"

I slowly pushed myself to my feet.

Every movement hurt.

But I refused to let them see it.

Not anymore.

I looked around the grand hall.

The marble staircase.

The crystal chandeliers.

The paintings I had personally chosen.

The home I had unknowingly paid for.

Then my eyes settled on Nathan.

The man who had mistaken my silence for weakness.

The man who believed power belonged only to those who shouted the loudest.

He still had no idea whose daughter he had married.

I met the commander's eyes.

"Secure the estate."

"Nobody leaves."

Nathan's face drained of color.

"You can't do this."

The commander finally looked at him.

His voice was calm.

"We already have."

Within seconds, two officers moved toward every exit.

Another team disappeared upstairs.

One began photographing the room.

Another carefully collected the riding whip into an evidence bag.

Celeste stumbled backward.

"Evidence?"

Nathan immediately turned toward me.

"Victoria..."

His tone changed completely.

"This is unnecessary."

"We can talk."

"We're husband and wife."

For four years...

those words had been used to silence me.

Tonight...

they meant nothing.

I looked at him with complete indifference.

"No."

Just one word.

The same word he had heard from me only minutes earlier.

Only now...

he finally understood what it felt like to lose control.

Then another sound echoed through the entrance hall.

Not helicopters.

Not sirens.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Confident.

Every officer in the mansion immediately turned toward the front door.

Without a single command...

they stood at attention.

The commander lowered his head.

"Sir."

Nathan frowned.

Celeste stopped breathing.

An older man in a dark tailored coat stepped into the light.

His silver hair was immaculate.

His expression unreadable.

The moment I saw him...

I forgot the pain.

"Dad."

He looked at me.

Then at the injuries Nathan had tried so hard to hide.

For several long seconds...

he said nothing.

When he finally spoke...

his voice was terrifyingly calm.

"I gave you four years to prove you deserved my daughter."

He slowly turned toward Nathan.

"You failed."

Nathan opened his mouth to speak.

Victoria's father raised one hand.

Nathan fell silent instantly.

The old man's next sentence chilled every soul inside Blackthorn Manor.

May you like

"Now..."

"It's my turn."
