Chapter 1 — The Empire Was Never His

Chapter 1 — The Empire Was Never His

Marcus laughed as security escorted me through the revolving doors.

"Make sure she never steps inside one of my hotels again."

His voice echoed across the marble lobby.

No one corrected him.

Not the general manager.

Not the executives.

Not even the security guards.

Because everyone believed Marcus Ashford owned Ashford Luxury Hospitality.

He believed it too.

That was the greatest mistake of his life.

I didn't cry.

I didn't beg.

I simply watched the hotel disappear behind me.

Then my phone vibrated.

Incoming Call: Richard Sinclair.

My father.

The man whose name had never appeared beside mine in public.

The billionaire who had spent forty years building one of the largest luxury hospitality groups in the country.

"Are you safe?" he asked.

"I am now."

"I've already spoken with legal."

"You moved that quickly?"

"I've been expecting this day for years."

I closed my eyes.

He wasn't surprised.

Neither was I.

Marcus hadn't become cruel overnight.

Power had changed him little by little.

Every success made him believe he was untouchable.

Every promotion convinced him the empire existed because of him.

He forgot that every loan guaranteeing expansion came from the Sinclair Family Trust.

Every acquisition had been approved by my father.

Every hotel deed had remained under Sinclair Holdings.

Marcus was only the operating CEO.

Never the owner.

The paperwork had always protected our family.

And tonight...

That protection ended.

At 10:47 p.m., every member of the board received the same confidential email.

Emergency Meeting. Mandatory Attendance.

Marcus wasn't invited.

Not yet.

He had one more hour to enjoy believing the empire belonged to him.

He had no idea midnight would change everything.

At 11:18 p.m., his access badge stopped working.

He frowned.

He tried again.

Nothing.

"Call IT," he snapped.

"They'll fix it."

The front desk manager swallowed nervously.

"Sir..."

"It isn't an IT problem."

"What do you mean?"

She looked at the screen.

"Your executive credentials have been suspended."

For the first time that evening...

Marcus stopped smiling.

Across the city, I stepped into the black sedan waiting outside my father's office.

He looked at me carefully.

Not as a billionaire.

Not as a chairman.

Simply as my father.

"I'm sorry," he said quietly.

"I should have ended this years ago."

I reached for his hand.

"No."

"It had to happen this way."

"Now everyone knows exactly who Marcus really is."

May you like

And by sunrise...

So would the entire company.
