CHAPTER 3 — The Truth They Buried

CHAPTER 3 — The Truth They Buried

Three days later...

Arthur entered my office carrying a sealed archive box.

"We found these."

Inside were contracts.

Emails.

Financial records.

And one document that made my blood run cold.

Daniel hadn't simply betrayed me.

He had been stealing.

For nearly three years.

Millions of dollars had been funneled into shell companies controlled by Chloe's brother.

Patricia had signed several authorizations herself.

Arthur looked at me carefully.

"We have enough evidence for criminal prosecution."

I closed the folder.

For a long moment...

I said nothing.

Then I answered.

"File everything."

Within forty-eight hours...

Investigators froze every fraudulent account.

Luxury homes were seized.

Bank accounts were locked.

Patricia's jewelry collection was confiscated as evidence.

Chloe disappeared from every social event she once dominated.

Reporters camped outside Daniel's apartment.

His phone never stopped ringing.

Not because anyone wanted to help.

Because everyone wanted answers.

The board announced a full internal investigation.

Every employee received the same message.

Integrity would no longer be optional.

No one was above accountability.

Not even family.

A week later...

Daniel requested one final meeting.

Against Arthur's advice...

I accepted.

He looked exhausted.

His expensive suits were gone.

His confidence had vanished.

"I loved you," he whispered.

I looked at him quietly.

"No."

"You loved what I could do for you."

He lowered his head.

"I ruined everything."

"Yes."

"You did."

He reached into his pocket.

Inside was my wedding ring.

"I kept it."

I looked at the ring for several seconds.

Then gently pushed it back toward him.

"Keep it."

"It belongs to your past."

"I don't live there anymore."

When I walked away...

He didn't follow.

For the first time...

He understood that some doors never reopen once they are closed.
