Chapter 4 – One Year Later

One year after the birthday party...
The mansion stood empty.
Sold by court order.
The marble floors remained.
The crystal chandeliers remained.
But the fear was gone.
Across town...
A much smaller house overflowed with laughter.
Fresh flowers covered the kitchen table.
Sunlight poured through open windows.
Valeria stood in front of a mirror.
Not hiding bruises.
Applying lipstick because she wanted to.
Not because someone expected perfection.
A knock sounded at the door.
Ernesto entered carrying a cake.
This time...
No extravagant decorations.
No wealthy guests.
Just family.
He placed the cake on the table.
Thirty small candles flickered.
He smiled.
"My daughter..."
Valeria smiled back.
"I know."
"You don't need to ask."
He looked at her carefully anyway.
"How are you?"
She answered without hesitation.
"I'm free."
Not happy every day.
Not healed completely.
But free.
Later that afternoon...
She drove to the Women's Justice Center.
The same advocate who had met her in the garden greeted her warmly.
Valeria had become a volunteer.
Then a counselor.
Then an advocate.
Every week...
She sat beside women who believed they had no escape.
She never promised them miracles.
She simply told them the truth.
"The hardest step..."
"...is believing your life belongs to you."
Outside the center...
Children laughed in the park.
The wind carried the scent of fresh rain.
Ernesto watched his daughter through the window.
He realized something.
Justice had never been about revenge.
Justice was giving someone back the future that fear had stolen.
And on the anniversary of the birthday that had almost destroyed her...
May you like
Valeria finally celebrated the first birthday that truly belonged to her.
The End.
