Chapter 1 – The Arrest

The living room stopped breathing.

No one moved.

Not the guests.

Not the musicians.

Not even Julián.

The two investigators quietly displayed their badges.

"We're with the Special Domestic Violence Unit."

The words echoed through the mansion.

One investigator looked directly at Julián.

"Sir, please place your hands where we can see them."

Julián laughed.

A forced laugh.

"This is ridiculous."

He looked around the room.

"Everyone here knows she's dramatic."

No one answered.

Not a single guest.

The forensic examiner walked straight toward Valeria's untouched birthday chair.

Without speaking, she photographed the broken makeup compact lying beneath it.

Then she photographed tiny drops of blood that had dried inside the powder.

Invisible to everyone else.

Impossible to ignore under forensic light.

The domestic violence advocate stepped outside into the garden.

She gently approached Valeria.

"You don't have to go back inside unless you choose to."

For the first time in nearly a year...

Someone had given Valeria a choice.

She burst into tears.

Inside the house...

Ofelia finally stood.

Her hands trembled around the black trash bag.

"It's just garbage," she insisted.

"Old papers."

One investigator calmly extended his hand.

"Then you won't mind handing it over."

"No."

She hugged it tighter.

"No warrant."

Ernesto spoke quietly.

"There doesn't need to be."

Everyone turned toward him.

"You just attempted to destroy evidence in front of fifteen witnesses."

Silence.

The investigator nodded.

"Ma'am, place the bag on the floor."

Instead...

Ofelia bolted.

She sprinted toward the kitchen.

Toward the back door.

She never made it.

One investigator intercepted her before she reached the hallway.

The bag slipped from her hands.

It split open.

Paper scattered across the polished marble.

Property deeds.

Forged signatures.

Bank records.

Photographs.

Medical prescriptions written under false names.

And...

A small spiral notebook.

Ernesto recognized it instantly.

Valeria's handwriting.

Months earlier...

Valeria had secretly begun documenting everything.

Every slap.

Every threat.

Every bruise.

Every date.

Every witness.

She had hidden the journal inside the lining of an old suitcase.

She thought no one knew.

She was wrong.

Ofelia had found it weeks ago.

Instead of destroying it...

She kept it.

Insurance.

Evidence she could use to manipulate Valeria if necessary.

Now...

It belonged to the investigators.

The lead detective slowly flipped through its pages.

His expression hardened.

He closed it carefully.

Then looked at Julián.

"You are under arrest for aggravated domestic assault, coercive control, financial abuse, and witness intimidation."

Julián's face turned pale.

"This is my house!"

Ernesto answered before anyone else could.

May you like

"No."

"It was always hers."
