Chapter 16 — I Found the Real Owner of My Husband’s Fortune

The photograph wouldn't leave my mind.
Julian.
Richard Vane.
Standing together.
Shaking hands.
Three years ago.
I stared at the image until the edges of the room seemed to blur.
For weeks, Julian had told me he had been trying to protect me.
He had lied.
He had forged my signature.
He had hidden money.
He had allowed me to believe he was unemployed while I worked myself sick trying to keep our family together.
But this was different.
This looked like betrayal.
I turned toward Daniel.
“Tell me the truth.”
He didn't answer.
“Now.”
Daniel looked at the photograph.
Then at me.
“That meeting happened.”
My stomach tightened.
“So Julian was working with Vane.”
“Not exactly.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“Emma—”
“No.”
I held up my hand.
“I am done being protected from the truth.”
Daniel finally nodded.
“Then you deserve all of it.”
He pointed to the date.
“Three years ago, Julian discovered something about the trust.”
“What?”
“That you weren't just the beneficiary.”
I frowned.
“What else could I be?”
“The controlling trustee.”
The words landed harder than I expected.
Daniel continued.
“Your mother created the trust before you were born. Richard believed the money belonged to her. Then he believed it belonged to James. He never realized the legal structure had been changed.”
“Changed to me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Margaret knew exactly what Richard would do if he learned you existed.”
I looked back at the photograph.
“Then why was Julian meeting him?”
Daniel's expression darkened.
“Because Richard already knew.”
Silence.
“What?”
“Three years ago, Vane found evidence that Emma Vale wasn't dead.”
My heart stopped.
“You're saying he knew I was alive?”
“He suspected.”
“And Julian knew?”
Daniel nodded.
Marcus lowered his eyes.
I understood.
All those strange phone calls.
The hidden accounts.
The safe house.
The forged documents.
The constant warnings.
Julian hadn't been reacting to Vane's discovery.
He had been preparing for it.
But that didn't excuse the lies.
Nothing could.
I pointed at the photograph.
“What happened at this meeting?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Julian went there voluntarily.”
My chest tightened.
“Why?”
“To make Vane believe he had access to the trust.”
I stared at him.
Daniel pulled out a second photograph.
Julian sat across from Vane.
Between them was a black folder.
On the folder were four words:
MERCER FAMILY TRUST.
My hands went cold.
“What was inside?”
“A copy of the trust.”
“Why would Julian show it to him?”
“He didn't.”
Daniel turned the photograph over.
There was handwriting on the back.
He thinks I have the key.
My breath caught.
Daniel continued.
“Julian wanted Vane to believe the controlling documents were in his possession.”
“But they weren't.”
“No.”
“Where were they?”
Daniel looked directly at me.
“With you.”
I shook my head.
“I've never had them.”
“You have.”
He reached into his coat.
He removed a small velvet pouch.
Inside was a silver pendant.
I recognized it immediately.
My mother's necklace.
I had worn it since I was thirteen.
I touched it.
Daniel said quietly,
“Your mother didn't leave you jewelry.”
He opened the pendant.
Inside was a tiny compartment.
A thin metal strip sat inside it.
I stared.
“What is that?”
“The key.”
My knees weakened.
Twenty-four years.
My mother had carried the answer inside something I had worn almost every day.
I looked at Daniel.
“Who owns the fortune?”
He didn't hesitate.
“You.”
I swallowed.
“All of it?”
“The trust assets. The protected accounts. The remaining properties. The legal control.”
I almost laughed.
After everything I had endured, the truth was almost absurd.
I had spent two years worrying about groceries.
Bills.
Our mortgage.
Our children's future.
While a fortune had been legally waiting for me.
But then Daniel said something that erased the humor.
“Richard Vane wants it.”
My face hardened.
“Then let him come.”
Daniel shook his head.
“He isn't coming for the money.”
“What does he want?”
Daniel looked toward the photograph of my children.
“He wants you.”
The room went silent.
“For twenty-four years,” Daniel continued, “he believed your mother died protecting an asset.”
He looked at me.
“Now he knows the asset was never the money.”
“What was it?”
Daniel's answer was almost a whisper.
“You.”
Then my phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
YOU FINALLY FOUND WHAT BELONGS TO YOU.
Another message arrived.
NOW COME CLAIM IT.
And beneath it was an address.
An abandoned courthouse.
I looked at Julian's photograph.
Then at Daniel.
“Is that where Vane is?”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
I picked up my coat.
“I’m going.”
Marcus grabbed my arm.
“Emma, no.”
I pulled free.
“For twenty-four years, everyone else has made decisions about my life.”
I looked at him.
“Tonight, I make my own.”
Then Daniel said something that stopped me.
“Emma…”
I turned.
He held up the final photograph.
It showed Julian.
Richard Vane.
And my children.
All three were standing inside the courthouse.
My blood ran cold.
Julian hadn't betrayed me.
He had walked into the building first.
And now I understood why.
He had gone there to negotiate for the lives of our children.
But the photograph had one detail I hadn't noticed.
In the background—
was a man I had never seen before.
A man holding a gun.

And beneath the photograph, Vane had written:
YOUR HUSBAND HAS UNTIL MIDNIGHT.
