Chapter 13 — The Recording That Changed Everything I Knew About Julian

I couldn't speak.
Me.
The real owner.
Not my mother.
Not Julian.
Not Vane.
Me.
I looked at the documents again.
There was no mistake.
My name appeared on the trust.
Emma Margaret Mercer.
Beneficiary.
Final authority.
The trust had been established before I was born.
I looked at Julian.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
He looked broken.
“Because I didn't know.”
I stared at him.
“You just said you knew about the trust.”
“I knew about the existence of it.”
“But not the ownership.”
“No.”
“Who did know?”
Daniel answered.
“Your mother.”
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“Your father?”
“Yes.”
“Who else?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Me.”
I stared at him.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Twenty-four years.”
I felt tears rise.
“And you watched me live my whole life without knowing?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because your mother made me promise.”
I looked at the old recorder.
“What exactly did she make you promise?”
“That I would never reveal the trust unless Vane found you.”
I laughed bitterly.
“And now he has.”
“Yes.”
I sat down.
Julian remained standing.
I couldn't look at him.
Not yet.
Then I remembered something.
The hard drive.
The corrupted video.
The one minute remaining.
“Marcus.”
Julian looked at me.
“What about Marcus?”
“He has the backup.”
“Where?”
Julian hesitated.
“At my old office.”
“Take me there.”
“No.”
I stood.
“You don't get to say no.”
“I know.”
“Then take me.”
We left before dawn.
Marcus met us at the old building.
He had brought a laptop.
Evelyn came too.
Selina arrived five minutes later.
I looked at all of them.
Four people.
Four versions of the truth.
I wanted one complete story.
Marcus connected the drive.
The backup file appeared.
MARGARET VALE — FINAL MESSAGE.
I clicked play.
My mother's face appeared.
This time, the recording was clear.
“Emma.”
Her eyes softened.
“If you're seeing this, then you're older than I ever expected you to be.”
I began crying.
She smiled sadly.
“I wish I could tell you everything myself.”
She paused.
“But if you're watching this, I am gone.”
I wiped my face.
“Your father will tell you I betrayed him.”
She took a breath.
“He will say I stole money.”
She shook her head.
“I did not.”
“The money belonged to people Richard destroyed.”
“I protected it.”
“Some of it became the trust.”
She leaned closer to the camera.
“That trust belongs to you.”
My heart broke.
“You are not the daughter of a fortune.”
“You are the keeper of a promise.”
The recording paused.
Then she said something that changed everything.
“Julian Mercer has been watching over you.”
I looked at my husband.
His eyes filled with tears.
My mother continued.
“I asked his father to protect you.”
“But his father betrayed us.”
“Julian discovered the truth when he was twenty-seven.”
“He chose to continue the promise.”
I stared at Julian.
My mother smiled faintly.
“He may lie.”
“He may make mistakes.”
“He may believe he can carry the burden alone.”
She looked directly into the camera.
“But he loves you.”
I closed my eyes.
The recording continued.
“Emma, I know you may hate him one day.”
A pause.
“If you do, I will understand.”
“But don't confuse his fear with a lack of love.”
My breathing became uneven.
Then she said:
“And never let his love become an excuse for his control.”
I opened my eyes.
Julian looked at me.
My mother continued:
“You deserve the truth.”
The screen flickered.
Then another file appeared automatically.
JULIAN MERCER — PERSONAL RECORDING.
I looked at him.
“You recorded something?”
He shook his head.
“I didn't know that existed.”
The video opened.
Julian appeared on screen.
Three years younger.
Sitting alone in a dark office.
He looked exhausted.
Then he began speaking.
“Emma, if you're watching this, something went wrong.”
My heart tightened.
“I know you're angry with me.”
“I know you think I failed you.”
“I let you believe I was unemployed.”
“I let you carry bills.”
“I watched you work when I should have been standing beside you.”
He looked down.
“I was ashamed.”
“I was afraid.”
“And I convinced myself that if you hated me for being broke, you would at least be safe.”
I covered my mouth.
Julian continued.
“But that's not the truth.”
“The truth is I was afraid you would hate me if you knew what I had done.”
“I forged your signature.”
“I moved money without your permission.”
“I lied about the investigation.”
“I lied about your mother.”
“I lied about the house.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“And every lie was supposed to protect you.”
He looked directly into the camera.
“But I know now that protecting someone without giving them a choice isn't protection.”
“It is control.”
I felt something inside me break.
He continued.
“If I survive this, I will tell her everything.”
“If I don't…”
He stopped.
Then whispered:
“Please tell Emma I loved her.”
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Julian.
He wasn't defending himself.
He wasn't asking forgiveness.
He simply stood there.
Waiting.
I walked toward him.
For a moment, neither of us moved.
Then I said:
“I believe you loved me.”
His eyes filled.
“But love doesn't erase what you did.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
I took a breath.
“And I don't know if our marriage can survive this.”
He closed his eyes.
“I understand.”
Before I could say anything else, Selina's phone rang.
She answered.
Listened.
Then looked at me.
Her face had gone pale.
“What?”
She slowly lowered the phone.
“Someone found the trust.”
Daniel stood.
“Who?”
Selina looked at me.
“Richard Vane.”
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“How?”
She shook her head.
“He accessed the original registration.”
“What does he know?”
Selina swallowed.
“He knows the trust belongs to you.”
Julian immediately reached for his phone.
Then it rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then a man's voice came through.
Cold.
Calm.
Almost amused.
“Julian.”
My husband froze.
The voice continued.
“You've spent twenty-four years hiding that girl.”
A pause.
“Now I'm going to make her pay for what her mother stole.”
The call ended.
Julian looked at me.
I had never seen that much fear in his eyes.
Then Marcus checked his phone.
A new message had arrived.
One photograph.
Our children.
Standing outside school.
Taken that morning.
Underneath it were six words:
THEY'RE NEXT IF EMMA RUNS.
I couldn't breathe.
Julian stepped toward me.
This time, I didn't pull away.
Not because I had forgiven him.
Because for the first time, we were facing the same enemy.
May you like
And somewhere outside that building—
Richard Vane had just declared war on our family.
