Chapter 9 - THE LAWYER WHO KNEW EVERYTHING

Owen Mercer had attended every birthday dinner since I was nine.

He had taught me chess.

He had delivered my father's speech at my wedding because Elias could not trust himself to speak without crying.

Now he was holding my father and Talia at gunpoint.

Betrayal rarely comes from strangers.

Strangers do not know where to place the knife.

I showed the photograph to Agent Keller.

She immediately ordered Nathan's hospital wing sealed.

"You are not taking him anywhere."

"Owen asked for him."

"Which means Nathan is either valuable or expendable."

From the bed, Nathan laughed without humor.

"With Owen, those are usually the same thing."

He had known for years that Owen handled confidential Vale trusts.

Celeste introduced them through a private arbitration case.

Owen helped create shell companies, erase beneficial ownership records, and route payments for the facility holding my mother.

Nathan claimed he believed the payments funded a protected witness.

By then, I no longer cared what he claimed to believe.

"Why does Owen want you?"

Nathan looked away.

"Because I kept insurance."

He had copied one ledger Celeste ordered him to destroy.

It showed Owen receiving payments from August Monroe before my kidnapping and from Celeste after her father's death.

Owen was the Vale insider my mother had been hunting.

He provided my schedule twelve years ago.

He altered dental records after Mara staged her death.

He manipulated both families, preserving Meridian while appearing loyal to Elias.

"Where is the ledger?"

"Inside my wedding ring."

I stared at his bare hand.

The ring had been logged as evidence at Blackthorn Manor.

Agent Keller called the property facility.

The ring was gone.

Of course it was.

Owen had spent decades turning evidence chains into private roads.

Keller wanted to track the photograph and rescue Elias without cooperation.

Owen had anticipated that.

A live video arrived on my phone.

My father sat beneath the wing of a cargo plane.

Talia was bound beside him with blood on her temple.

Owen stepped into frame.

He looked exactly as he always did.

Perfect suit.

Silver tie.

Gentle voice.

"Serena, you have thirty minutes."

"Let them go."

"Bring Nathan to Hangar Six at Grayhaven Executive Airfield."

"Why?"

"Because he memorized the location of an account key Celeste needs."

Nathan shook his head.

Owen smiled at the camera.

"He will deny it."

Then he pressed a gun against Talia's knee.

"Do not make me prove I am serious."

The video ended.

Keller prepared a tactical operation.

I prepared another plan.

Nathan watched me remove the federal cuff from his bed under Keller's supervision.

"You trust me?"

"No."

"Then why bring me?"

"Because Owen expects the weak woman you created."

I leaned closer.

"I am bringing him the man who created her."

We traveled in an armored transport while tactical teams moved through service roads around the airfield.

Nathan wore a vest beneath his hospital clothes.

His injured arm remained in a sling.

He looked smaller without the suit, the mansion, and the people paid to fear him.

"Did you ever love me?" he asked.

The question was so absurd I almost ignored it.

"Yes."

He closed his eyes.

"Do you still?"

"I still remember the person I loved."

"That is not an answer."

"It is the only one you deserve."

At Hangar Six, Owen stood between my father and Talia.

Four armed men guarded the doors.

A small jet waited behind them with engines warming.

Celeste was nowhere visible.

"Bring him forward," Owen ordered.

Nathan and I walked together.

My father looked at me with anger.

"You should not be here."

"You agreed to stop making that decision for me."

Even tied to a chair, Elias almost smiled.

Owen held out his hand.

"The account key."

Nathan looked at him.

"It does not exist."

Owen shot one of his own men in the chest.

The body fell without warning.

Everyone froze.

"That man planned to betray me," Owen said calmly.

"I dislike wasted time."

Nathan swallowed.

"The key is a phrase."

"Say it."

"Release them first."

Owen aimed at my father.

"Say it."

Nathan looked at me.

Then he spoke the phrase.

"Mara chose the fire."

The hangar lights shut off.

Emergency alarms screamed.

Talia broke one hand free from the rope and overturned her chair.

Gunfire erupted from the side entrance as Keller's team breached.

I dropped behind an equipment cart.

Nathan disappeared into the darkness.

When the lights returned, Owen was gone.

My father was alive.

Talia was wounded but conscious.

The jet had not moved.

Then Keller shouted from the rear exit.

A black vehicle was racing toward the runway.

Nathan sat in the passenger seat.

Owen was driving.

My husband had not been taken.

He had chosen to leave with him.

On the concrete where Nathan had stood, I found a folded note.

It contained three words in his handwriting.

TRUST ME ONCE.

Inside the armored transport, Nathan tried to apologize without using the word apology.

He spoke about stress, Celeste, money, and the fear of losing everything.

Every explanation placed the beginning of his violence somewhere outside his own body.

I listened until he ran out of places to hide.

Then I asked one question.

"When did you first imagine hurting me?"

He looked toward the dark window.

May you like

His silence told me it had begun long before the staircase.
