Chapter 6 - MY MOTHER'S LAST LIE

No one spoke.
My mother's signature glowed on the archive screen like a message from the dead.
Mara Vale had been buried eleven years earlier.
I had watched the coffin disappear into the ground.
I had stood beside my father while rain filled the grave.
Yet the authorization in front of us carried her biometric seal, private cipher, and voice confirmation.
The date was impossible.
Nathan turned toward Elias.
"Is she alive?"
My father looked older with every second he remained silent.
Celeste stepped closer to the terminal.
"Play the confirmation."
Elias moved to stop her.
A Meridian gunman struck him in the stomach.
I lunged forward, but Talia caught my arm.
The recording began.
My mother's voice filled the hidden chamber.
"Blue Route remains active until Serena is no longer a target."
My knees nearly failed.
Her voice was exactly as I remembered it.
Warm.
Precise.
Never hurried.
"All transferred technology is to be tracked through Ashford Logistics and recovered when Meridian leadership surfaces."
Nathan stared at the screen.
"Ashford Logistics did not exist then."
Elias finally spoke.
"The shell company did."
My mother had created it as bait.
The original Ashford Logistics was not Nathan's idea.
It was an intelligence trap designed to lure Meridian buyers into traceable shipping contracts.
After her death, Elias needed someone ambitious enough to expand it without asking the right questions.
Nathan became that person.
The forty-million-dollar investment was never only a wedding gift.
It was fuel for an unfinished operation.
I felt sick.
"You used my husband."
"I used his ambition."
"And you used me to keep him close."
"No."
My father's denial came too quickly.
"You let me marry a man whose company you built as a trap."
"I believed he loved you."
"You believed he was useful."
Elias had warned me to hide my power so Nathan would reveal himself.
Now I understood the full cruelty of that advice.
My father had not merely observed Nathan's character.
He had created the conditions that rewarded Nathan's worst instincts.
Celeste laughed softly.
"The Vale family finally discovers honesty."
She ordered one of her men to copy the archive.
Talia shifted beside me.
Her hand moved toward the emergency transmitter inside her sleeve.
A gunman noticed.
He aimed at her.
Nathan struck him from the side.
The shot shattered a shelf instead of Talia's chest.
Chaos filled the library.
Agent Keller drove her shoulder into the man behind her.
My father seized the fallen weapon.
Talia pulled me behind the stone fireplace as bullets tore through books and glass.
Celeste removed the sapphire from the terminal and grabbed the sealed archive case.
Nathan blocked her path.
"You knew about Blue Route."
"Not all of it."
"You knew my company was bait."
"Your company was a weapon."
"Mine."
Celeste stared at him with contempt.
"Nothing about you was ever yours."
She shot him.
The bullet struck his shoulder and spun him against the desk.
I should have felt satisfaction.
Instead, I felt nothing.
Nathan slid to the floor, staring at the woman for whom he had destroyed our marriage.
Celeste stepped over him.
"You were a door, Nathan."
"Now you are open."
She fled through a service passage hidden behind the shelves.
Two Meridian men followed.
The remaining gunman was taken down by Keller and Talia.
My father knelt beside Nathan, applying pressure to the wound.
Nathan laughed through gritted teeth.
"You save me now?"
"I need you alive."
"For Serena?"
Elias looked at me.
"For the truth."
Police teams flooded the manor minutes later.
Celeste escaped through the old wine tunnels beneath the eastern garden.
She took the sapphire and the sealed case, but the archive terminal had transmitted one fragment before she disconnected it.
A map.
The Blue Route led to Pier Seventeen at the Port of Grayhaven.
A cargo vessel called The Mariner was scheduled to depart before sunrise.
Its manifest listed humanitarian generators.
Vale intelligence flagged the containers as archive servers stolen from three governments.
If Celeste reached international water, she could auction decades of secrets.
Nathan was loaded into an ambulance under armed guard.
As paramedics closed the doors, he caught my wrist.
I pulled away.
"Serena, I can stop her."
"You could not stop yourself."
"I know the port systems."
"So do federal agents."
His face tightened with pain.
"The Mariner is a decoy."
I looked back at him.
"How do you know?"
"Because Celeste made me purchase it last year."
He swallowed hard.
"The real cargo moves underground through the old customs railway."
Agent Keller leaned into the ambulance.
"Where does the railway end?"
Nathan looked at my father.
"At a Vale Dominion facility."
Elias's face went still.
Nathan smiled bitterly.
"Your enemy is not breaking into your empire."
"Someone inside it opened the gate."
Talia's phone rang.
She answered, listened, and looked directly at Elias.
"Vale Dominion headquarters has gone into lockdown."
"Why?"
"Because Marcus Reed just used Serena's biometric credentials to enter the central archive."
As the ambulance carried Nathan away, I found his blood on my mother's desk.
For years, he had treated Blackthorn as proof that he belonged among dynasties.
Now the house held evidence from every family that had used him.
Vale.
Monroe.
Ashford.
Names powerful enough to frighten strangers and weak enough to ruin the people carrying them.
I pressed a cloth over the stain until it stopped spreading.
Some damage could be contained.
May you like
None of it could be denied.
