Chapter 8 - The Family Behind the Betrayal

Nathan wasn’t the beginning.

He was only the person standing closest to me.

That was the truth I discovered next.

For months, I thought the betrayal started with my husband and his secretary.

But betrayal has roots.

And sometimes those roots are buried deeper than anyone expects.

The name that appeared most often in the investigation was not Nathan.

Not Sienna.

Someone else.

Michael Carter.

Sienna’s father.

The man behind Northstar Alignment.

The man who had somehow connected himself to Hartwell through his daughter.

I studied his history.

Corporate consultant.

Investment advisor.

Strategic planner.

And then…

a pattern appeared.

Every company he worked with eventually changed ownership.

Every partnership became unstable.

Every executive relationship ended in conflict.

He didn’t build companies.

He positioned himself near them.

Then waited.

Miriam discovered the connection.

“Your father knew him.”

I looked up.

“What?”

She placed an old photograph on the desk.

My father.

Michael Carter.

Nathan.

Sienna.

All together.

I stared.

“When was this taken?”

“Eight years ago.”

Eight years.

Before Nathan and I met.

Before the wedding.

Before everything.

“How?”

Miriam looked at me.

“Your father was investigating him.”

My heart tightened.

“Why?”

“Because Thomas Hartwell believed Michael Carter was involved in corporate manipulation.”

I looked at the photo.

My father knew.

He knew people like Michael existed.

He knew someone might eventually come after Hartwell.

Then we found the missing connection.

A consulting agreement.

Michael Carter had advised Nathan before he met me.

Not after.

Before.

The document was clear.

Michael provided Nathan with strategic guidance.

Including:

Market analysis.

Corporate positioning.

Relationship mapping.

I stared at those words.

Relationship mapping.

That wasn’t business.

That was planning.

Sienna finally agreed to meet me.

Not at Hartwell.

Not at my home.

A quiet restaurant in Manhattan.

She arrived alone.

No designer outfit.

No perfect smile.

Just a tired woman carrying years of secrets.

She sat across from me.

“You know now.”

I didn’t answer.

“You know why Nathan chose you.”

I looked at her.

“Did you help him?”

Her expression changed.

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised me.

“How?”

She looked down.

“My father introduced us.”

“Why?”

“Because Nathan needed someone close to Hartwell.”

I felt my chest tighten.

“And you?”

She looked at me.

“I thought I was helping my family.”

A pause.

“But I didn’t know how far they would go.”

I studied her.

“You came on my honeymoon.”

She looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

“You wore my jewelry.”

“I know.”

“You took my passport wallet.”

Her eyes dropped.

“I didn’t know he would do that.”

I almost laughed.

“You didn’t know?”

“No.”

Her voice cracked slightly.

“I thought the plan was only financial.”

I leaned back.

“What plan?”

She looked around.

Then whispered:

“Control.”

Sienna told me everything.

Nathan’s original plan was simple.

Marry me.

Gain influence.

Become involved in Hartwell leadership.

Slowly move decision-making power away from me.

Once control was secure…

he would restructure ownership.

But there was a problem.

My father’s protection system.

They couldn’t break it.

So they needed another approach.

Make me trust Nathan completely.

Make me voluntarily give him authority.

“Why tell me now?”

Sienna was quiet.

Then:

“Because Nathan stopped caring about the plan.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“He started believing he deserved everything.”

The sentence shocked me.

Because it was true.

Power changes people.

Sometimes it reveals who they already were.

“He stopped seeing you as a person.”

She looked at me.

“He started seeing you as an obstacle.”

When I returned to Hartwell, Nathan was waiting.

He stood in the lobby.

No assistant.

No confidence.

Just anger.

“You met with Sienna.”

I stopped.

“How do you know?”

His smile was cold.

“Because you don’t understand how this works yet.”

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

“It means you’re fighting people who have been planning this longer than you’ve been aware.”

I studied his face.

And for the first time…

I saw fear.

Real fear.

“What are you afraid of, Nathan?”

He didn’t answer.

Because the truth was obvious.

He wasn’t afraid of losing me.

He was afraid of losing Hartwell.

That night, Miriam called.

Her voice was urgent.

“Evelyn.”

“What happened?”

“We found something else in your father’s files.”

“What?”

A pause.

“The marriage clause.”

My heart stopped.

“What marriage clause?”

“The one your father created eleven years ago.”

I sat down.

“What does it say?”

Miriam’s voice became quieter.

“It says if someone marries you under false intentions…”

A pause.

“Ownership control automatically transfers.”

I froze.

“Transfers to who?”

Silence.

Then:

“To you.”

I almost laughed.

“More control?”

“No.”

Her voice lowered.

“Complete control.”

I looked out at the city.

The woman Nathan thought he married for access…

May you like

was becoming the one person who could remove him from everything.

And he had no idea.
