Chapter 4 - The Secretary Who Wanted My Empire

Sienna Carter was not just a secretary.
That was the first mistake I made.
I believed the title.
Executive coordinator.
Assistant.
Employee.
Those words made her seem harmless.
But powerful people rarely stand close to power by accident.
They position themselves there.
And Sienna had been positioning herself for a long time.
Daniel’s audit arrived forty-eight hours later.
The report was twenty-seven pages.
I read every single one.
The first pages confirmed what I already knew.
Travel expenses.
Luxury accommodations.
Private transportation.
All connected to Nathan.
Then came the transactions.
Northstar Alignment LLC.
Again.
And again.
And again.
But this time…
there was more.
A connection map.
Corporate registrations.
Family relationships.
Investment history.
I stared at the screen.
Sienna Carter was not simply connected to Northstar.
She was the reason it existed.
“Sienna’s father?”
Daniel nodded through the video call.
“Michael Carter.”
I searched my memory.
The name sounded familiar.
“He worked in corporate consulting.”
“Twenty years ago.”
Daniel opened another file.
“Then he disappeared after several failed acquisitions.”
I looked at the information.
“And now?”
“Now his daughter works directly beside you.”
The implication was obvious.
Someone had placed her there.
I remembered every moment.
The first time Nathan introduced us.
“She’s incredible,” he said.
“She understands my work better than anyone.”
At the time, I thought he was praising an employee.
Now I heard it differently.
He trusted her.
Maybe more than he trusted me.
That evening, I returned to Hartwell headquarters.
I didn’t tell Nathan.
I didn’t warn him.
I simply arrived.
The atmosphere changed immediately.
Employees noticed.
Executives stood.
People greeted me.
Not because I demanded attention.
Because they knew something was happening.
I walked into the executive conference room.
The same room where Nathan had presented expansion plans.
The same room where he spoke about “our future.”
Except now…
I saw the truth.
He wasn’t building a future with me.
He was building access.
I called Sienna.
She answered after three rings.
“Evelyn.”
Her voice was polite.
Too polite.
“Can you come to my office?”
A pause.
“Of course.”
She arrived twenty minutes later.
Cream blazer.
Perfect hair.
Calm expression.
The same woman who stood at Gate 42 holding my passport wallet.
She sat across from me.
“Is something wrong?”
I placed a document on the table.
Her eyes moved down.
Then stopped.
For the first time…
her confidence disappeared.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
The document showed Northstar Alignment LLC ownership.
Her family connection.
The payments.
The timeline.
I folded my hands.
“Tell me why my company paid your family $348,500.”
Silence.
Sienna looked at me.
Then smiled.
Not nervously.
Almost sadly.
“You really don’t know, do you?”
My stomach tightened.
“Know what?”
She leaned back.
“Nathan never told you.”
“Told me what?”
Her smile disappeared.
“The reason he married you.”
The room became completely still.
I didn’t react.
I refused to give her that satisfaction.
“Explain.”
Sienna looked at me.
And for the first time…
I saw what was underneath the perfect image.
Ambition.
“You think Nathan chose you because he loved you?”
I said nothing.
“He chose you because Hartwell was impossible to access.”
My hands remained still.
But my heart changed.
Not because I believed her.
Because I needed to know why she thought she could say it.
Before I could respond, my office door opened.
Nathan.
He stood there.
And the look on his face told me everything.
He wasn’t surprised to see Sienna.
He was surprised to see the documents.
“Evelyn.”
His voice was low.
“What are you doing?”
I looked at him.
The man I married.
The man who left me at Gate 42.
The man who thought I would wait.
“I’m asking questions.”
His jaw tightened.
“Sienna doesn’t work for you.”
“No.”
I looked at her.
“She works for you.”
A pause.
“And apparently…”
I looked back at Nathan.
“She works for my company too.”
Nathan stepped forward.
“Evelyn, we need to talk privately.”
I smiled.
A calm smile.
The kind that frightened people who were used to controlling the conversation.
“No.”
I closed the folder.
“We’re done having private conversations.”
The room went silent.
Because Nathan finally understood.
The woman who used to wait for him to explain…
was gone.
May you like
And the woman sitting across from him now…
owned the company he was trying to take.
