CHAPTER 3 — THE EMPIRE OF LIES

Matthew arrived at headquarters expecting damage control.
Instead, he found chaos.
Security badges no longer opened executive doors.
Employees whispered as he walked past.
Television screens filled the lobby.
"...serious allegations regarding corporate governance..."
"...questions surrounding intellectual property ownership..."
"...new legal filings expected today..."
He stormed into the boardroom.
Every chair was occupied except his.
The chairman didn't invite him to sit.
"We've reviewed new documentation overnight."
"What documentation?"
A thick folder slid across the polished table.
Investor presentations.
Patent drafts.
Funding correspondence.
Every document carried my name.
Every timestamp proved the same thing.
I had built the foundation.
Matthew had claimed the spotlight.
"You lied to every investor who entered this building," one director said quietly.
Matthew's confidence finally cracked.
"You don't understand."
"No," the chairman replied.
"We understand perfectly."
Within an hour, he was suspended as CEO.
By noon, federal investigators requested company records.
By evening, the media had discovered Lauren.
The headlines wrote themselves.
Meanwhile...
I sat across from my father in his Greenwich library.
The room hadn't changed.
Same fireplace.
Same shelves.
Same leather chair where he'd once warned me that love should never require surrender.
"I owe you an apology," I said.
He shook his head.
"No."
"I left."
"You came home."
His eyes softened.
"That's all that matters."
For years I believed coming back meant admitting defeat.
May you like
Instead...
It felt like freedom.
