Chapter 3: The Highest Price

Chapter 3: The Highest Price
The silver-haired stranger approached me once more.
"My name is Arthur Bennett."
"I knew your father."
My heart stopped.
"My father died twenty-five years ago."
Arthur nodded.
"He saved my life before he passed."
From his pocket, he removed a faded photograph.
It showed two young men standing beside an old delivery truck.
One of them was my father.
"He once told me," Arthur said softly, "'If anything ever happens to me, promise you'll watch over my little girl.'"
His eyes grew moist.
"I failed that promise."
He looked toward Julian.
"I should have come sooner."
Tears filled my eyes.
Not because of Julian.
Not because of the humiliation.
But because someone had remembered.
Someone had kept a promise across twenty-five years.
Arthur handed me a business card.
"I recently established a foundation for women rebuilding their lives after emotional and financial abuse."
"I'd like you to lead it."
I stared at him.
"I've never been a CEO."
He smiled.
"No."
"You've been something much harder."
"You've survived."
Six months later, the foundation opened its doors.
Hundreds of women found legal support, careers, counseling, and hope.
Julian's company slowly collapsed after donors and board members withdrew their support, unwilling to be associated with the man who had publicly tried to humiliate his own wife.
As for me...
I never accepted Arthur's one-million-dollar bid.
Because I had finally realized something priceless.
No woman can be auctioned unless she first believes she has a price.
