Chapter 2: The Truth Behind the Marriage

Chapter 2: The Truth Behind the Marriage

Julian grabbed the microphone again.

"Enough."

His voice cracked.

"This has gone far enough."

"No," I answered quietly.

"It hasn't."

Every eye turned toward me.

For twenty-two years I had stayed silent.

I had accepted every insult.

Every forgotten anniversary.

Every business dinner where I was introduced as "the wife" instead of by my name.

Every time Julian accepted praise for work I had quietly done behind the scenes.

Tonight, something inside me finally broke.

"You told everyone I was boring."

I looked around the ballroom.

"Who organized every charity event you've ever hosted?"

Silence.

"Who negotiated with sponsors after your assistants quit?"

More silence.

"Who answered donors at midnight while you slept?"

Julian opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Several board members exchanged uneasy glances.

One elderly donor slowly stood.

"I always assumed Julian managed everything himself."

I smiled sadly.

"He let you believe that."

Another voice came from the crowd.

"So did we."

Suddenly, one by one, people began remembering.

The woman who had solved crises.

The person who welcomed every guest.

The invisible force behind Julian's perfect reputation.

It had never been him.

It had been me.

The applause started with one table.

Then another.

Soon the ballroom echoed with something Julian had never expected.

Respect.

May you like

Not for him.

For the woman he had tried to sell for ten dollars.
