Chapter 17 - THE SECOND BLACKOUT

Roman pulled me down.

Ava screamed.

Vanessa grabbed Elise.

Nathan dragged Graham behind a steel cart.

Another shot struck concrete.

“Evelyn!”

Vanessa screamed.

Her mother’s voice came from the dark.

“You were supposed to bring the child alone.”

“Which child?”

Vanessa shouted.

For once, rage replaced fear.

“The one you told me was dead?”

Emergency red lights flickered on.

Evelyn stood behind the shattered observation window.

Beside her was Dr. Alan Reeves.

Thomas’s old colleague.

The man who had vouched for some of the original trial records.

Roman whispered,

“Reeves.”

The betrayal hit immediately.

He had been feeding Evelyn information for years.

Thomas trusted him.

We all had.

Reeves opened a side door.

“Leave Ava.”

I held her tighter.

Roman shifted in front of me.

Evelyn smiled.

“Still paying your father’s debts?”

Roman said nothing.

She continued.

“Marco begged.”

Roman’s shoulders went rigid.

I touched his arm.

Not to restrain him.

To remind him he had a choice.

He looked back.

Then nodded.

Evelyn noticed.

“How touching.”

Federal sirens grew louder.

Reeves panicked.

“We need to go.”

Evelyn ignored him.

She looked at Elise.

“Nineteen years.”

Her eyes became almost reverent.

“Do you know what you are?”

Elise stared at her.

“A person.”

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Pride.

Pain.

Love compressed into one look.

Evelyn frowned.

“You are proof.”

“No.”

Elise stepped beside her mother.

“I’m her daughter.”

That sentence defeated Evelyn more effectively than any weapon.

Because it rejected the role she had assigned.

Subject.

Sequence.

Proof.

Variable.

Elise chose daughter.

Human.

Federal agents breached the outer corridor.

Reeves fled.

Roman tackled him near the stairwell.

Nathan moved toward Evelyn.

“Mother.”

She looked at him.

“Come with me.”

Nathan laughed softly.

“Still giving orders.”

“You are my son.”

“No.”

His eyes moved toward Ava.

“I’m her father.”

Evelyn aimed at him.

Everything happened at once.

Graham moved.

He knocked Nathan sideways.

The gun discharged.

Graham fell.

Vanessa screamed.

Agents flooded the room.

Evelyn was forced to the floor.

The weapon slid away.

Nathan crawled toward Graham.

Blood spread across Graham’s shirt.

Not graphic.

But enough.

“Dad.”

One word.

Not Graham.

Not liar.

Not thief.

Dad.

Graham looked at him.

“I should have told you.”

Nathan’s face collapsed.

“Yes.”

“I was afraid you’d leave.”

Nathan laughed through tears.

“So you taught me to do the same thing.”

Graham understood.

His eyes closed.

Paramedics rushed in.

He survived.

Barely.

Evelyn was arrested again.

This time federal detention replaced corporate lawyers.

Reeves was charged with evidence tampering, kidnapping conspiracy and obstruction.

But none of that mattered to me in those minutes.

I sat on the dirty laboratory floor holding Ava.

Roman crouched several feet away.

He did not touch us until I reached for his hand.

Then he came closer.

“I thought I lost her.”

“I know.”

“I can’t do this.”

“You already are.”

“I’m terrified.”

Roman looked at Ava.

“That seems reasonable.”

I laughed through tears.

Then Nathan approached.

Roman tensed.

I shook my head.

Nathan stopped three feet away.

“Can I see her?”

I looked at him.

He was her biological father.

He was also the man who abandoned us.

The man who deceived me.

The man who had ultimately turned against Evelyn.

Nothing fit neatly.

I lowered the blanket enough for him to see Ava’s face.

He began crying.

He did not ask to hold her.

That mattered.

“I’m sorry.”

He whispered.

I looked at him.

“For which part?”

“All of it.”

“That isn’t enough.”

“I know.”

“Sorry doesn’t rebuild trust.”

“I know.”

“It doesn’t give Ava back the first hours of her life.”

His face tightened.

“I know.”

I nodded.

“Then start there.”

He looked confused.

“Knowing it isn’t enough.”

“You have to live differently.”

Nathan nodded slowly.

Then stepped back.

Roman looked at me after he left.

“You’re kinder than I would be.”

“No.”

I looked at Ava.

“I’m done making permanent decisions while I’m bleeding.”

For the first time, Roman laughed.

A real laugh.

Then my father arrived.

He saw Elise.

Stopped.

And whispered,

“M-17 wasn’t the last one.”

Elise looked at him.

Thomas’s face changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“Elise…”

She frowned.

“How do you know my name?”

Thomas stared at Vanessa.

Then at Graham being carried away.

May you like

Finally, he whispered,

“Because I’m your father.”
