Chapter 14 - THE BABY THEY SAID WASN’T MINE

I laughed when Angela first told me.

Not because it was funny.

Because the alternative was screaming.

“I gave birth to her.”

“I know.”

“I watched them place her on my chest.”

“I know.”

Nathan looked terrified.

Roman asked the question no one wanted to ask.

“What happened during the missing eleven minutes?”

Silence.

The hospital outage.

The transport carrier.

The attacker.

My arms tightened around Ava.

“No.”

Roman approached carefully.

“I’m not saying she isn’t yours.”

“Then don’t say it.”

“I’m saying Graham only needs doubt.”

Angela agreed.

“If he convinces a judge the trust activation may be defective, the shares can be temporarily frozen.”

“And he passes the sale.”

“Yes.”

We had twelve hours.

The obvious answer was another DNA test.

Independent.

Court-certified.

Nathan volunteered.

I refused his preferred laboratory.

Roman refused Cross Meridian’s.

Angela chose a university genetics center with no corporate ties.

Samples were taken from me.

Ava.

Nathan.

Results would take six hours under emergency processing.

At 3:40 a.m., the laboratory called.

Claire Bennett and Ava:

99.99 percent maternal relationship.

I cried with relief.

Then the technician said,

“There’s an anomaly.”

I froze.

“What?”

“The archived hospital sample from the night of delivery does not match the infant we tested tonight.”

Roman stood.

“What do you mean?”

“Two different newborn DNA profiles.”

My skin went cold.

Ava was mine.

But someone had substituted another baby’s genetic sample inside the hospital system.

That was the fraudulent DNA Graham intended to use.

The M-17 activation had been triggered by a sample belonging to someone else.

Or so he would argue.

“But Ava has M-17.”

I said.

“Yes.”

The technician replied.

“That is the unusual part.”

Both samples show M-17 markers.”

Silence.

Another child.

Another female newborn carrying M-17.

Impossible.

Unless—

Roman looked at Thomas.

Thomas looked horrified.

“Evelyn made another line.”

The realization spread.

A second child.

Another family.

Another experiment.

Graham had access to a backup M-17 sequence.

That was how he planned to invalidate Ava.

He would claim the trust could not determine which child triggered succession.

We needed the identity of the second baby.

The hospital sample number led to a birth nineteen years earlier.

Female.

Mother:

Vanessa Mercer.

I stared at the screen.

“Vanessa has a daughter?”

Nathan looked shocked.

“She was sixteen.”

Roman searched records.

No child appeared.

No adoption.

No death certificate.

Nothing.

Vanessa had given birth nineteen years ago.

And the baby disappeared.

When confronted, Vanessa collapsed.

Not metaphorically.

Her knees literally gave out.

“I thought she died.”

Nathan caught her.

Vanessa stared at the DNA report.

“Mother told me she died.”

Her voice became small.

For the first time, the elegant, controlled woman looked sixteen.

“I woke up after delivery.”

“She said the baby never breathed.”

No body.

No funeral.

No certificate.

Evelyn had taken her own granddaughter.

“Why?”

I asked.

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Thomas did.

“Backup continuity.”

We all looked at him.

“If Claire never had a daughter, Evelyn needed another M-17 female line.”

Vanessa’s face twisted.

“She used me?”

Thomas nodded.

“Who was the father?”

Vanessa whispered,

“I don’t know.”

Silence.

“I was drugged at a Mercer research retreat.”

My stomach turned.

Nathan looked like he might be sick.

Evelyn’s crimes had reached inside her own family.

Roman searched deeper.

A hidden hospital code appeared:

TRANSFERRED: PRIVATE GUARDIAN G.C.

Graham Cross.

He had taken Vanessa’s daughter.

I called him.

He answered immediately.

“What do you want?”

“Where is Vanessa’s child?”

Silence.

Then Graham said,

“You’re becoming irritating.”

“Where is she?”

“You should focus on your own daughter.”

“I am.”

“Then attend the vote tomorrow.”

The line disconnected.

Roman looked at Vanessa.

She was shaking.

“I’ll find her.”

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

“Don’t promise me.”

Roman paused.

Then nodded.

“You’re right.”

He changed the sentence.

“I’ll try.”

That was better.

At 8:55 a.m., we entered the Cross Meridian boardroom.

Graham sat at the head of the table.

He looked confident.

Until Angela placed three independent DNA certifications in front of him.

“Ava Bennett is Claire Bennett’s biological daughter.”

Graham barely glanced at them.

“Not relevant.”

Angela smiled.

“It will be.”

Then I placed Nathan’s six-percent proxy beside them.

Graham’s expression finally changed.

Fifty-one percent.

I stood.

“As controlling voting trustee, my first motion is to suspend the Aurelia sale.”

Hands rose.

The motion passed.

My second motion removed Graham Cross as chairman pending investigation.

Passed.

My third opened all M-17 archives to federal regulators.

Graham stared at me.

“You have no idea what you just destroyed.”

I looked at Ava.

“No.”

“I know exactly what I stopped.”

Security approached Graham.

He stood.

Then leaned toward me.

“You think Evelyn is the worst person in this story.”

I said nothing.

His smile returned.

“She isn’t.”

He looked toward Thomas.

“Ask your father who signed the first unauthorized M-17 consent.”

My heartbeat changed.

Graham walked out.

I turned toward Thomas.

He had gone pale.

“Dad?”

He didn’t answer.

May you like

And I knew.

The signature was his.
